Trying to decide on a size for my farmhouse sink

I am in process of deciding cabinet configuration and appliance sizes. I know where everything is going to go, I am just having difficulty deciding on the size. Specifically how did 'you' choose the size of farmhouse sink when you put a new sink in? My current sink is a SS double bowl that measures 36" across on the inside. I know that I want a single bowl but is 30" sufficient or should I go all the way for a 36"? I am fairly sure that a 30" would fit my longest frying pan or roaster. So what else should I be thinking about? Whether the dog can fit?

Do you do much hand washing? I never use a DW so my dishes are handwashed; sometimes I use a dishpan and I checked to make sure that even with a dishpan set down in the sink I still had ample room for rinsing on the side.

The different brands of fireclay or porcelain farm sinks have significantly different shapes, with some quite narrow (from front to back) at the bottom. You should check that out, as well as distance from side to side. Be sure to measure the size of the bottom surface as some have a wide sloping curve where the sides meet the bottom, making the flat central surface smaller than the open top.

Some also have offset drains (not centered), and one brand (Rohl) comes with an unpredictably offset drain, apparently a small portion of the drains are on the opposite side from the majority and the "flipped" ones appear randomly. (The good thing is that Rohl sinks can also be turned around from front to back as they finished on all four sides, so in most cases it doesn't matter, except for the placement of the logo.)

Changing from a double bowl to single (whether farmhouse style, or not) is something that most people really like. But a few people find they don't like it. If you have a chance to wash some dishes in a friend's single-bowl sink before making the decision that would be good. Personally I would never have anything except a large single bowl sink.

My farmhouse sink is the nominally 30" (actually 28" at the bottom of the basin) single-bowl Franke one.

I’ve had a 30” Shaw at a second home for 10 years and still love it but decided on the 33” Kohler Whitehaven for our new kitchen reno at home - it was such a price difference and looked so similar. I actually like it better! I especially like the slight slant of the bottom to the offset drain. Much easier to rinse scraps into the disposal. It’s still new but it does seems like the Kohler finish is easier to keep clean. We removed the Kohler logo (which was crooked anyway) so it’s just all white and looks great!

Hi. Has anyone ordered a Shaw Farmhouse sink and the size has differed from the actual measurement? I have already placed the order for my cabinets and I ordered a 33" sink base for a apron sink. I was told by the plumbing supply showroom that the sink should have been ordered first as they can very plus or minus 2%. I was hoping to oder a 30 inch wide sink. Did you order your sink first? How much was the measurement off? Also, now I have seen on some of these forms that these sinks are not holding up very well. Any other sink recommendations?

Thanks fiori and odiegirl3! fiori: DH and son are in the process of getting the permit to remove the post. Evidently, the architect left the post off of the updated drawing, so the county needs to see the post details before approving the plan. At least we have five to six weeks and we should be able to get an express permit done on Wednesdays once we have the updated drawing. odiegirl3: they are bound to have another promotion at sometime or another. It's good to take your time on picking out your cabinets. I know that you are drawn to the more traditional looking painted cabinets, too! Now, I have to figure out the granite and then the backsplash. I'll take it one step at a time. I'll try to document the process as I go. It's a relief that I've finally made my cabinet choices. I'm thinking that cream and black are pretty neutral choices and I'm hoping for a somewhat timeless look. Cheers, Karen

What about the depth of the sink concerns you? I have a soapstone sink that I made 3 years ago in my bathroom/mudroom/guest bathroom. It is 9" deep x 17" square, interior measurements. I like the depth. The sink could be a little wider but I didn't have the room to accommodate a wider sink. I don't know why my pictures insert sideways, doesn't matter if it is a landscape format or a portrait format, the same - sideways. : (
