3 Year Kitchen: Bigger Photos - as requested

Hello all,

Wow, I knew that I loved how my kitchen came out, but I had no idea that so many others would love it too. Thanks for all of the compliments! It almost makes it worth the 3 year wait ;)

I promise to post more pics when we decide on a backsplash, and when we get the table and bench for the banquette.

Mythreesonsnc: We considered locating pendants on the trusses, but decided not to for a couple of reasons. We wanted the eye to be drawn up when entering the room. We were worried that pendants would detract from this as a focal point, and preferred the simplicity and unobstructed view of nothing hanging down. I love the pendants you picked out, by the way. We probably would have ended up with something very similar to the one you chose if we had decided to use pendants.

Pickle2 and Scootermom: Since my husband's business is building timber frame barns, he knows a lot of men in the trades. One of our friends, Jeff, is an top-notch carpenter and craftsman. He and my husband designed the storage benches, and then Jeff built them in place for us. He also did all of our wainscotting and trim work. There will be a table in front of the banquette along with a bench for extra seating. We just haven't found one we like yet.

Lisa A: Something I knew right from the get-go was that I wanted a gas cooktop with an electric oven. When we started this whole thing, I don't think they had ranges with this combination (if they did, I was not aware of them). So, we ended up with the oven underneath the cooktop simply because that was the best location for the oven in our layout. I don't mind it, though it is a bit low - lots of bending over.

PS. I so wanted a double oven, but alas, it was not to be. :(

What a gorgeous kitchen, home and dog. Congratulations on it all. I love the exposed wood beams. Were they there or did you put them up in your renovation? I also love the dark colored hinges and pulls on your cabs with the soapstone counters. Beautiful.

Thanks for the larger photos! It's like being there now. ;-) Looks even better. And I can see that we have the same coffee maker!

Isn't it nice to have skilled DH and 'connections?' Enjoy your gorgeous space. :-D

Hi Michellemarie: Thanks for the tip on the soot issue. We had some trouble getting a specialist to install in that area, so the guy who installed maybe got the logs a little bit off when positioning? When we first installed, the flames did not show up as well as the showroom model did. I asked about the log placement then, and he told me there was only one way to install the logs. After some use, I began noticing the soot--but the flame, for some reason, looks much better. (Maybe DH got in there and moved the logs....I'll have to ask him about that.) I will be going into the showroom where we bought the unit, as the switch which controls the blower has not been working, and I have to pick up a new one of those, so I will see what I can learn then about the log placement. Guess I can show them that picture. The "local" vendor (which is on the mainland) told me they use a generalist from another island to service those units, so I was not sure he would be any more knowledgeable than my install guy was. I'm so glad you mentioned the soot though, because I did not know anything about the log placement, only that the flame seemed not right to begin with, and then the soot appeared. Now I know there is an issue for sure...so at least I can have some confidence when I talk to the folks who sold me the unit. Despite these installation/adjustment issues, we really love that fireplace though! (Makes me want one in every room each time I walk past it). Thanks so much for the help!

Hi Andi, I have 3 Ikeas within 2 hrs. of me and I've been to all 3. There are slight differences in their displays, I guess due to different demographics. I would suggest going on a weekday, if at all possible. Eat something beforehand, have some caffeine and a Tylenol. I can't stress that enough! The kitchen designers and sales staff were very helpful. You'll get a lot more boxes and bags than you would expect. One of my boxes looked damaged and one was re-taped, They replaced them on the spot. Later I noticed a couple of items were marked REA. I think they were returned- but seemed to be unopened and just fine. The instructions are all pictograms- only one word "CLICK". If you're good at jigsaw puzzles, you'll be fine. Once you get one together- you're an expert. One or two pieces weren't drilled exactly, and we had to come up with a couple of different screws to get things right, but all in all it was do-able. We were sold some extra pieces, about $50 for panels. No idea what they are for. The drainpipe pieces for the sink were plastic, so we replaced them with metal ones from a plumbing supply store. The next morning after installation, a small piece of an inside door panel appeared to be lifting. I know we didn't damage it, but I'm not sure they'll take it back since we attached the hardware. There's a slight ding on the counter that we may have caused by dropping a glass. So, we tried to intentionally damage a leftover scrap of counter with a hammer and it held up just fine. There's a tiny cut on drawer edge that's not noticeable. I just don't know if they'll hold up as well as the ones we replaced (25 yrs.) They do come with a 25 year guarantee though. But, I do LOVE the 30" drawer cabinet. The drawers work like a dream. They hold my pots and pans, so I no longer have to reach over a hot stove for them. And it's so easy to see everything. I wish I had gotten another one, but I'm going to keep small appliances in the other bottom cabinet and I thought the open space might be more flexible. The laminate counters we got have white on one side and reverse to dove grey on the other. They have a metal edge which is very nice. They have another which is black on one side, reversing to whitewashed wood grain. I went with the white so that it would be brighter. I figured I can always accessorize with other colors. I got hardware from Expo. Aqua beach-glass rectangles framed in stainless. I got matching square knobs for the upper cabinets. If I can figure out how, I'll send pix. Any further developments on the floor choices? The pass-through?

I got shaker drawers. After my panicked request here, I also consulted TPTB (The Powers That Be, as I refer to the designer who helps us with our remodel; DH calls her "the high priced talent"). She said definitely shaker. By that time I'd seen all the pics posted here and realized I love all 3 options and can't make a bad decision no matter which way I go, so I just went with what she said. I'm totally shocked that the cabinet order is DONE and I'm not nervous. After 48 or so kitchen layouts including major changes like originally doing a minor remodel, then a major, then swapping DR and kitchen, then going BACK to major redo of kitchen in existing space, I sort of feared we'd never actually commit and do the thing. It still seems very unreal at this point, so maybe that is why I'm not nervous. The cabs are shaker with the wide rails and stiles (more contemporary) in a medium/dark cherry. I will have soapstone counters, I hope, and will keep my existing oak floors. I'm keeping some appliances and getting some new ones. The biggest change will be that I'm removing the bay at my kitchen table and doing a larger squared off bay so that there is room to actually move around the table when a diner is seated, plus I will get seating for 3 at the island. We're supposed to start the heavy structural Aug 18 (bump out window), demo kitchen 2nd week of Sept around the same time cabinets are scheduled to arrive. I am expected to be without a real kitchen for 3-4 weeks and, with luck, the beloved GC and his crew will leave by Halloween, still beloved. let's hope that plan works!!! I am so gracious for all of these comments and feedback. You guys are really helping me to target my objective here. While I could spend more on a total remodel, it really is "unnecessary". I realize that the decent sized formal dining room is a plus. Also, optimally, at some point down the line, I'd like to extend the back of my home by five feet and add a floor (giving me a larger kitchen and enlarging the size of the bedroom above it, which is the same size). At that point, a total remodel would make the most sense. So perhaps for now, the NON PERMIT route might be the best path to take to get some modernity in the home while keeping the expenses low. I've been looking at homes in towns near me which have kitchens with similar square footage, yet sell for $200K+ more than my home. Here is an example. Their kitchen is 12x7. They have their refrigerator in an adjacent pantry (this home is over $200K more than my own!) A NON PERMIT route with "storage tricks" (i.e. slide out spice racks, smaller fridge, ceiling cabinets) sounds like the right path. I get to save on not having to move plumbing/gas/electrical. @mama goose_gw zn6OH and @mnmamax3 I see your point about the off-putting feeling of coming out of the powder room into the dining room/kitchen area. While this might be the cheapest way to get a powder room because of the existing closet door, since I'd need a permit to construct a powder room anyway, perhaps a better entrance would be a new door constructed along the door of the hallway, sealing off the existing closet door, or turning that existing closet into a shallower closet. I believe the wall down the hallway is load bearing. This could be the modified floor plan which puts the entrance to the powder room in the hallway. Would it be a 100% NO to put a 24" refrigerator where my drop leaf table pot rack and radiator are? If I were to put it in that spot, there would be 3" between the fridge and radiator. On the other hand, if I went with the 24" refrigerator in the place of where the 30" one is now, I'd get 18" of counter space between it and the 30" oven instead of the 8" I have now!

Love the bigger pics, so much easier to see your beautiful new kitchen! It was certainly worth the wait, I'm sure you are so excited! I love how you blended the stone and the hardwood, we are still toying with that idea by our back door. The ceilings, both the copper and the trusses, are spectacular! I also love how you have stone, wood, and metal all combined to create such lovely texture throughout the room, completely unique! Your puppy is so cute and photogenic! Enjoy your beautiful new space!

Thanks for the big pics! I love the red accents and forgive me if I'm being too nosy, but what color dishes do you have? I have a similar color scheme going and I'm debating between red dishes or green ones.

Buddyrose: Some of the beams are original (mid 1800s) and some are new.

Pattyk 64: I have old plates from before DH and I were married. They are cream colored Emma from Pottery Barn. The cream looks fantastic against the red placemats.

Oh my, those photos are gorgeous - really shows off all the details. I love the red accents and is that a tin ceiling by your back door? That puppy sure is cute too.

Beautiful kitchen! I am in love with the natural light you have worked into the space. Are those standard skylights in the ceiling, or a special type of window?

Also, can I ask the dimensions of your banquette and what size table you plan to use? We are planning a banquette in our kitchen as well.

Thanks so much for the details --- the big pics really show off every awesome detail! I agree with you about the lights (thanks for taking the time to respond). Now that I have seen an example of a kitchen with these fabulous beams, I think that should be the focus too. I will have to find a different area for those great pendants :-).

Thank you for posting the larger pictures. Your kitchen is so beautiful. I love the beams and the brick with everything else. It makes your kitchen very unique.

I see you have hot water baseboard heat, but also have baseboard vents. Do you have more than one type of heat or are the vents for air conditioning? I ask because we are going to be building and my DH plans on hot water heat, radiant floor heat, and forced air for the air conditioning.

there are little heaters that can be installed under cabinets. They kick on when your hot water heat turns on to circulate the water. I wonder if that is what the vents that you are look at are? We are looking into doing that with our kitchen because we are going to have to take out about 12' of hot water baseboard heat and will need something.

This is just so lovely and warm and homey. It's exactly what a kitchen should be. Congratulations on a wonderful job. (and I love your dog!)

it's so beautiful. so many kitchens on here look like those magazines. I don't even have to pay 5-10.00 to look at 'em... lol!

it's a good thing you have 'photo dog' so you know where and when to take the pics! such a sweetie.

what's the measurement out from the corner on the base corner door? (each direction) I'm wondering if I have room for a door like that...
