Dishwasher size vs. cabinet space?

We're trying to decide whether to go with an 18" or 24" dishwasher in our smallish bungalow kitchen, and would love any advice on the tradeoffs between dw size and extra cabinet space. (If we do 18", we'd probably go with a Miele, since we've heard they hold significantly more; the 24" would be a lower end European model since we have to stick with a 22" depth.)

To do this, we have to cut out of old built-in-place wooden cabinets, so it's no small task (and will be pricey to change after the fact). We save a cabinet if we do the 18", and also have better access to a block of drawers which will be a bit hemmed in with the 24". We aren't especially short of cabinets and there are only two of us, so from that perspective the 18" seems like a reasonable choice. However, the machine itself is much more expensive than comparable 24" models, and it seems that some homebuyers frown on the smaller machines. (We don't plan to sell anytime soon, but hacking out the cabinetry will limit future options short of a full kitchen remodel.)

If you had to choose, which would you pick? (For reference, 2 of 7 cabinets and 3 of 12 drawers will be affected; our home is a 1200sf 2BR, so it's not likely to house a family much larger than 3 or so.)
