sink size vs cabinet size vs room size

After lots of reading I'm still confused about what size sink to get for a 33" cabinet. Would I be able to use a 23" undermount sink? Which measurement is more important for the sink...the width (front-to-back) or the length (side-to-side)? I know I could put a 31" sink in the cabinet but my kitchen is fairly small and I think a sink that size would be out-of-sync (lol) with the overall kitchen space. Are there any design "rules" ( guidelines) for sink size in relation to room size?

I'm no expert but I can tell you that I find a sink that's significantly smaller than the sink cabinet to be unattractive. Plus, if you have a smaller sink and can do a smaller base cabinet, that seems to make more sense to me in terms of storage. Let's say a 23" sink can go in a 27" cabinet - I'd do that and have an extra 6" to use for other base cabinets. That's more valuable real estate to me.

There are quite a few pictures of sinks on the FKB and on Houzz where the base cabinet looks big. I think it's probably a personal preference. I like the sink to look like it's just right for the cabinet. But if you find it just as attractive to have a smaller sink in a large cabinet then I think that's fine too.

I think that big a difference could look a bit odd and make the cabinet look too big for the sink and the room -- in other words, it might accentuate the scale issues. I agree that you will almost always get better use of more room in a a base cabinet or drawers than more room in a sink base, so that would be important to me also.

Are you trying to use existing cabinets? Perhaps a carpenter could divide the sink base to give you a tray or cookie sheet cabinet to the side of the sink base and rework fthe doors to fit a narrower sink base size.

Another thing to consider is whether you cook using any large pots and pans. A 23" sink would feel pretty tight for me.

Thanks for the headsup, angela12345. I measured the GD and went to HD to measure the interior dimension of a 30" sink base cabinet. My oh my, a 30" sink base is TINY! But, it will have to do for now. The 33" sink base has more space inside and I wish we could put it in our layout without my being so bothered. Sigh. Alas, I really can't stand how the spacing of the sink base is uneven in relation to the already lopsided window on the wall. It makes me feel I am living in the winchester mystery house! So far, I have ascertained that it can hold our trash, recycle bin and compost pail, with a smidge of room left for fire extinguisher. Definitely no room for insta-hot water heater and filter. So, we nix that from our wish list. I am looking for a single bowl undermount. After some online research, I found a kindred sink KCUS30A-10/10BG that I like but I don't know if it's available online or not. I wish I could use the ticor sink but the one I like needs a 33" sink base. Bummer. The kindred sink I am interested in will have interior dimension of 27"W x 16"L x 10"H. The built in vent fan in ovens should provide adequate cooling. The electronics should withstand whatever the resulting temperature is. Everybody should be nice to each other so we would have world peace. In many cases none of the above seems to be true. Reading the reviews almost every brand has it's horror stories. And the horror stories generally involve overheating. My 30" oven will be installed in a 33" cabinet. The cabinet has an open back on the oven cavity and is pulled 3" out from the wall. There are two 50 CFM fans mounted on top of the cabinet that are ducted to either side of the oven cavity and operated by a 110 deg thermostat in the oven cavity. All this may be completely unnecessary. It may not be very effective in reducing the temperature of the electronics inside the housing. But the total cost of these modifications is about $75. and a few inches of cabinet space. The oven cost considerably more. If this helps even a little bit, it's money well spent.

I don't think youll be able to fit a trashcan on the same side as the garbage disposal. On the other side, it should fit. With that said, I would advise against getting the drawer pullout for the trash for two reasons. One being, if there is a leak, big or small, your access to plumbing is limited unless you take out the entire pullout. And keep in mind where your plumbing is coming in from. Our water supplies were from the floor and out drain was through the wall. The water supply would have hit the back of the pullout. The sink cabinet is our only cabinet that we used doors for. We have drawers/pullouts for every other base cabinet in the kitchen. Two, it is my personal opinion that the workflow is off balance with the sink and garbage being in one cabinet. Generally if two people are in the kitchen, one will be by the sink (prepping, cleaning, etc), so access to the garbage for the other person is limited, unless the first person moves over. But, if space is tight and you can't find anywhere else to put a trash pullout, 'you gotta do what you gotta do!' We ended up using a 12 inch base cabinet with the wire pullout and moving the wire racks all the way down and putting an IKEA trash can with lid inside. Works well and takes up very little space. (also, I can't tell you how much we love our Domsjo sink and Wasteking!) Good luck!

Thanks for all the feedback. You have given me a lot to think about. Interesting idea to move the light but I'm not sure it would work - it would have to be moved through a joist which probably means expensive and the bathroom has me pretty well tapped out. Plus right now it lines up with the door and the center cabinet -- I think it would bug me to have it off center.I guess I could move it back closer to the cabinets but I really just want to be done with the home renovations, LOL! However, in the process of googling about for pictures of schoolhouse lights, I found a very similar looking lamp at Home Depot for $40 -- it's 12" diameter and takes a 100w bulb so I'd get the brightness I want in a slightly smaller fixture for 1/3 the price. (If you're curious, you can see it here: http://www.homedepot.com/p/Hampton-Bay-Esdale-1-Light-Ceiling-Oil-Rubbed-Bronze-Semi-Flush-Mount-Light-SF230/203194915) The glass and metal look cheaper and thinner but it's just the laundry room so I'm not too worried. So I think I'll go buy it -- that way, if it looks awful or the laundry gets stuck up there, I can return it. I think it should be ok though -- the light will be close enough to the ceiling and the chute far enough away that I think it would be hard for laundry to catch. And I suppose if it does, I could always build the chute lower as in the picture Oly posted. Thanks again! (And feel free to keep offering opinions -- it's not a done deal yet and I'd rather make sure I think about all the options now vs. wishing I had done something differently later.)

Lascatx: I cook 'gravy' and pasta on Sundays so yes, I use big pots! LOL Funny thing, tho, is that I've had a double sink for 25 years, each sink being 14" so 23" to me would be an improvement!
brittu: I fully understand your issue about real estate. However my sink needs to be centered with the window and I think it would bother me more to not have the sink also centered in the cabinet. My setup is so tight that I really can't move things around much so going into a 27" base would only give me 3" on each side. Not sure if I can work out the other cabinets to abdosrb that 3"...might be doable tho. Something to work on. Thanks!
I guess if I can't work that out then I'll just have to get another double sink, maybe 70/30. I don't think that would look as out-of-place as a single 31" sink.
