Oven size vs cabinet size

In my search for a new oven I noticed that all have frequent problems with overheating the electronics and ocasionally other parts. I had a 24" Kitchenaid double self cleaning in a 28" cabinet for 8 years and a Fridgedaire 27" double self clean in a 30" cabinet for 5 years. No problems with either oven.

while ordering cabinets for a new kitchen I noticed that 30" cabinets will fit a 30" oven. It's a tight fit and the oven cavity is not ventilated at all. Seems like that would cause/or enhance any overheating problems.

How may people actualy do that? (put a 30" oven in a 30" cabinet).

If your designer does his job, then your contractor or installer doesn't have to cut anything. The oven slides right into the properly sized opening !

Now, if the designer is green , or just plain lazy, ordering a cabinet 20% larger than it needs to be does cover his fanny.

I did - it's a flush fit. It's been in use for 15 months without a problem.

Little ventilation in cabinet should not be a problem. The oven is ventilating air in and out. the air path goes around the oven and should provide a cool air cushion between the hot oven and the oven chassis, so that the oven does not heat up the cabinet. For example, when Miele oven is doing self-clean, one hardly feels that the cabinet is being heated. Anyway, you still get normal space at the back.

I don't see any reason why a 30" sink wouldn't fit in a 33" cabinet. We're putting a 32" into a 36" cabinet. There is room to spare. If you find the bigger sink doesn't work, can't you return it for a smaller size? Hope someone with more install knowledge pops in. I advise you to go with at least the 18" wide prep sink. 15" is tight for some prep tasks. And 18" allows more space if you occasionally want to wash something out there if the clean-up sink is busy being used for something else.

@Amy Cantu We've been in our house for 6 mo now and I really like the GE Monogram oven. I haven't actually used the speed oven functionality of the speed oven. Just the microwave. And even then, we just use the add 30 sec option. I need to sit down with the manual and experiment with it. Unfortunately, using the speed oven is not as simple as just turning it on. It's pretty complex. I remember when I tried the speed oven at my friend's house it was really hard, and I thought I'd need to dedicate some serious experimentation to getting it to work for me, and doubted that I would ever bother using it as an oven except for Thanksgiving, which hasn't happened yet. My motivation to learn how to use it has been even less than I expected, so I'm sorry to say I can't report back. I also haven't tried using the oven probe functionality for the oven (haven't cooked a roast yet). Need to find the oven probe along with the speed oven manual! But I have done a ton of baking and roasting of vegetables and have been pleased. We were living in a rental house with a viking range and the GE monogram oven is 1000x better than whatever model of viking oven came with the range in the rental. Much more even. I've done two cakes side by side and they came out beautifully without the need to rotate. With a sheet of cookies I notice that sometimes a corner might brown a little quicker than another corner, but not so much that I really need to worry about rotating the pan halfway through. Broiler also works great--I've been making a lot of toast to go with steak tartare and an entire pan filled with toast toast 100% evenly under the broiler--hooray!

"I think the premise is to have pulls be *no more than* 1/3 the drawer length." I think designers invent "rules" like this just to have rules. I have never paid much attention to such nonsense. There is a limit, of course, to how wide pulls can be. You don't want them to interfere with drawer operation. Other than that, anything that looks good to you is just fine. As for variations in length, don't worry about it. There is no rule that all pulls have to be the same size, although the same general design is good. One thing about pantry pulls. You are probably going to be opening pantry doors with arms full of groceries, so a pull you can operate with an elbow, wrist, knee, or one pinky finger is a good choice.

That's the only way we've done it for twenty years or so, though we started with 27" ovens in 27" cabinets.

My cabinets are being installed as I type. My designer influenced me to do a 33 inch cabinet for a 30 inch oven for two main reasons. First was when all is done there will be an inch or so of wood around the oven doors which not only will look nicer than just a sliver, it will be more durable and will allow the adjacent cabinets more room to swing fully open. If the oven door was tight to a 30 inch cabinet the adjacent cabinet door would probably keep hitting the side of the oven door at 90+ degrees open. Secondly, although I have a great contractor doing my job site install, a 30 inch oven in a 30 inch oven doesn't give him much room for error as he is cutting away 99% of the openning face. A 33inch mitigated all the above, so I was convinced.

The built in vent fan in ovens should provide adequate cooling. The electronics should withstand whatever the resulting temperature is. Everybody should be nice to each other so we would have world peace.

In many cases none of the above seems to be true. Reading the reviews almost every brand has it's horror stories. And the horror stories generally involve overheating. My 30" oven will be installed in a 33" cabinet. The cabinet has an open back on the oven cavity and is pulled 3" out from the wall. There are two 50 CFM fans mounted on top of the cabinet that are ducted to either side of the oven cavity and operated by a 110 deg thermostat in the oven cavity.

All this may be completely unnecessary. It may not be very effective in reducing the temperature of the electronics inside the housing. But the total cost of these modifications is about $75. and a few inches of cabinet space. The oven cost considerably more. If this helps even a little bit, it's money well spent.

which not only will look nicer than just a sliver, it will be more durable and will allow the adjacent cabinets more room to swing fully open --- I personally think it looks better without the 1" surround, so that's just personal opinion, but yes, what you have next to the oven matters -- in my case, both left and right are pull-outs, not cabinet doors.

Do a custom sized cabinet at 31'' instead of the 33''. Works better, looks better, every time.

An oversize cabinet doesn't help. the oven has to fit the cutout pretty close. There is not much room for error. Cutting the opening at installation should be avoided if possible. It's much easier to get an accurate cut in the shop.
