sink size vs. cabinet size

I am stuck with a 33" cabinet for my primary sink in my kitchen renovation. I really want an offset/right corner drain and no more than 8" depth for an undermount sink so I think I'm going with a Julien sink "a la carte" (which allows moving the drain placement - by the way, the "suggested retail" on that option is $200 for those interested). (Love the Rachiele sinks but hard to justify the price - I'm actually renovating the entire back half of my house, including second floor and basement so the budget is way blown.) Julien says to go with a 27" sink for a 33" cabinet but my contractor says I can use a 30" sink. Obviously, I don't want to order a 30" only to find out it doesn't fit. Does anyone know why the smaller size is recommended? Has anyone fit a 30" into a 33" cabinet? Issues?

Oh, and in case it is relevant, I will have a prep sink near other end of kitchen and plan on either the 15x18x10 or the 18x18x10 (24" cabinet) there.

I don't see any reason why a 30" sink wouldn't fit in a 33" cabinet. We're putting a 32" into a 36" cabinet. There is room to spare. If you find the bigger sink doesn't work, can't you return it for a smaller size? Hope someone with more install knowledge pops in.

I advise you to go with at least the 18" wide prep sink. 15" is tight for some prep tasks. And 18" allows more space if you occasionally want to wash something out there if the clean-up sink is busy being used for something else.

thanks - can't return it as I'd be getting a special order "a la carte" sink in order to obtain the right rear drain placement.

I faced a similar dilemma. Replacing our existing granite countertops/sink with granite and sink more of our liking I originally had my heart set on a specific Blanco sink and when I did my final measurement (thankfully) before ordering, I found out our cabinet was too small per the Blanco specs. I did not want to mess with the cabinet to make something fit against the manufacturer specs. Good news was that since I wanted to stay with a Blanco sink, it pushed me to look at a model I had not previously considered: BLANCO PRECISÃ¢ÂÂ¢ Cascade Super Single Bowl with a cabinet requirement of 33". Now I am very excited for my upcoming new sink installation to replace my current Kohler (double equal size) sink. I will gain the larger single bowl, but still keep some of the functionality of a second "bowl" with the included colander. Plus I will now have a single drain vs. current two, thus gaining some real estate under the sink where it is currently very cramped. Not sure if this model is to your liking (it does have a shallower bowl) or will offer you what you are looking for? Blanco doesn't - yet - make a sink grid for this model. They told our plumbing distributor that is has been frequently requested though, so they are considering one for next year. Good luck!

As long as you don't care about ever replacing the sink down the road, and your cabinets are overbuilt for support for your stone tops, you can "scoop" out the tops of your sink base to fit a 30" sink in a 30" base. I don't recommend it. I've had at least one client who needed to replace her sink, and it wouldn't have been possible if she had done the scooping bit. As it was, she had a 33" sink in a 36" base, and it was doable. The sides of the sink are what transfer the weight of the granite to the ground, and compromising that support is never wise, especially for a heavy bowl full of water.

Looks at the specs for the sink and it will tell you min cabinet size. I'm guessing you will need 18 inch cabinet at least

The interior dimensions of your sink base will be 1 1/2 inches smaller than it's exterior dimensions. So, yes, a 30" sink should fit fine in a 33" base. Remember to take into account the size of the sink's mounting flange when doing the calculation. In other words, use the sinks overall size measurement as opposed to it's bowl size.
