I vote for the kind not attached, because I had the attached kind in the old kitchen. At least once or twice a year I would get my finger caught as I would swing the door shut when I was in a hurry...youch! Eliminating it was #2 on my list for the KD!

Not attached. My kids managed to not amputate their fingers but that darn door always made me anxious when they were near it.

The door that swings out. But even more important...get a super susan not a standard lazy susan. (Super susan is two independent trays on pivots. One on the bottom, one on a shelf...no pole). It'll give you more room, more flexibility and more stability. If you by any chance have a small cabinet (like a tray cab) next to the corner susan, think about combining them to expand the available space even more. I have a picture from someone else on GW who did this, but can't right now find it. I'll keep looking.

If you hate lazy susans, have you considered corner drawers? Pretty much the same amount of storage.

In my opinion, there is no best door for a corner cabinet. It's a "pick your poison" type of thing. I had the attached door for a while. On the plus side, you spin it, grab what you want (say your mixing bowls) and spin it back. If you keep something like sugar there, you can spin it open and leave it in that position while you pour sugar and not interfere with someone accessing the adjacent cabinets at the same time. The downside is that if something falls over inside and wedges in the wrong place, you can end up with a "stuck" door. Now if you're neat, tidy and careful, that won't be an issue. But for me with my slam, grab, dump habit -- it wasn't a good idea.

I have the piano hinge on my current door. While there are no jammed door worries, it is awkward and when open no one can access the adjacent trash pull - until I finish pouring the sugar ;-). I also have to be careful to not bang that piano hinged door into the door next to it.

They make a 3rd type of corner door set that open independently. One side has a handle and you pull the other open. While I'm not sure it would be much better than the piano hinge on my lazy susan, I wish I had that set up for the upper corner cabinet.

Attached, definitely. I've had one twice and they're very convenient--just push and go. I can't imagine how you could get caught in there. And the swing out doors are perpetually in the way and banging into other cabinets.

Corner susans are fantastic for storing large items like your mixing bowls or my pots.

I prefer the attached on a conventional susan. On a super susan it has to be hinged doors and thats ok, too. Each have their +/-. If the cabinet has interior walls that are close to the turntable it will be too narrow for things to fall off. Your cabinet maker could rig this if it isn't constructed that way.

How quickly you can forget what the old kitchen was like...I forgot in the other corner was a lazy susan style with the piano hinge. It was a larger unit, and for some reason, the door didn't open fully out of the way, and like skit said, you have to be careful..or not...because it would bang the cabinet next to it. After a few years the weight of the door caused it to hang uneven...or maybe it was just me abusing it. Soooo glad the lazy susan cabs are gone! But I am stuck with an upper corner cab that I didn't want. It's still empty.

I have the attached and it's okay. I thought I would change to the piano hinge kind when we reno, but yesterday at the Great Indoors, I was looking at some Omega cabs and the cab next to the supersusan was fairly banged up because of the piano-hinged door hitting it (I even accidently hit it and I wasn't being careless). Seemed way to easy to mar the beautiful new cabs, so I'll keep my attached door.

i like plllog's suggestion of corner drawers. maybe you could just get the 2-drawer kind, that way they would be deep enough for big bowls/pots.

After living with a dead corner for 26 years I embraced a lazy susan (w/piano hinge) in the new kitchen. Mine is next to the stove and perfect for larger pots and small appliances.

I am there with you. I decided to go with the not attached doors on the piano hinge. I remember getting my fingers pinched in my parents' as a kid, but I was (am) kind of a clutz. I felt like the lines on the not attached doors worked better with my cabinet design. But I definitely see the pros of attached.

I would avoid the option where you have to open up two little doors to get back there. A friend has that, and it's just not as user friendly.

I was not a fan either but in my last kit I had no choice and did the "no pole" upper, used for glasses and lower for mixing bowls etc. I actually found them to work out quite well.

I have what natal has and I'm amazed at how well it functions and how well I like it. I mean... look at how much stuff it holds!(I have my small appliances on it too)

Breezy- I second what melissastar said. get the shelf in the middle so that you can avoid the pole. This will also give you two nice wooden shelves vs plasticy ones. The door does pull out, but I never had a huge issue with it hitting the other cabinet. I wasn't THAT careful. I used the top part of the super susan for all of my spices and it was great because I could see them all (labels on top). I also used this space for my flour canisters, sugar, etc. I used the bottom for my food processor and other small appliances.

In the new house, I didn't have room for this setup, so I went with the pull out that is a half round to avoid losing a set of drawers next to my range. We will see how I like it. Cabinets are in but not yet installed.

You sound pretty adament about hating the susans, either. There are photos of corner drawers here -- I know plllog has them and others do too and I see them on the web, you could probably just google "corner drawer". They're pretty nifty design-wise. If you do really "Hate" susans, then why not pursue alternatives?

Fwiw I have always thought the lazy susan idea in the corner seemed very neat and so I was rather thrilled to have one. But I've never lived with them; I have heard complaints forever. Sounds to me as if not overloading them is key. I opted for the wooden shelves which have a fixed divider and therefore compulsory door. There are a series of decisions some of which force other ones (e.g. fixed divider => swinging door).

There are also "blind corner" cabinets that I know RevAShelf makes and probably others. Talk about nifty design. There are two oblong racks fitted at right angles into the corner and when you open a door one hinges out behind the other. It's quite trippy. And expensive. And utterly neat-looking and at least one person on here has raved about it - I believe she said she stole into the kitchen at night to look at it. I can only imagine; I would do just exactly the same. If you needed the space and hated susans and had a little extra $$$ I would think that would be the way to go -- height like the susans, no door problem, no tip-over problem.
