Tile counters: pros and cons?

We are getting ready to (finally!) start a kitchen remodel, and one of the last decisions outstanding is what to do for counters. We have a 1915 Arts and Crafts bungalow, so I'm really liking the look of tiled counters with a small hex tile (something like this: http://tiny.cc/tilecounter).

However, I grew up with tile counters that were ALWAYS icky and having grout problems. I've heard that epoxy grout has solved this problem to some degree, but just not sure if we should go down this road or not. We don't baby counters at all, and need something that will be heat/water resistant and not need super careful attention. Is this a bad match for us?

Has anyone had good/bad experiences with tile counters like this? This has been holding up cabinet/sink decisions since it affects both, so we just need to figure it out once and for all! Thanks!
