Pros and cons of custom made cabs vs. manufactured brand?
Comments (22)My experience is similar to babushka_cat. I had a difficult space and my primary goal was to maximize storate. I ended up with custom cabinets, but that was not my original plan. As I started to sketch my designs, I realized that I was going to have a tough time with maximizing my storage space using standard sizing. I had odd angles to work with, meaning that Id have to have several custom cuts to any standard cabinets. I visited a lot of showrooms, and I was really interested in some of the European cabinets, mainly because they came in a lot of "standard" sizes. Those lines gave me many more options in depth and width, so I was strongly leaning to Scavolini or Snaidero (much cheaper than the German lines I liked.) When I was talking to my contractor, he told me they work with a custom cabinet maker, and he said I should consider that route. I was weary because I didnt know if the finish would be as durable or if the quality would be good. But, after looking at his work in other houses, and seeing that his price quote was cheaper I was convinced. I am really happy that I went this route. This gave me flexibility to make changes at no additional cost. We also had a problem with the handle installation that hole in the door. No problem, the cabinet maker sent a new door the next day. I also added a couple of small, shallow wall cabinets to flank the sink once I realized I could better utilize what would have been blank wall space. No problem, the cabinet maker sent these two days later. I got extra deep drawers in my island so that I could avoid a blind corner, I got custom cut outs to my drawers so that I could have a pop up socket, I got special cabinet cuts to accommodate a trash can in a shallow cabinet, I got an giant sink cabinet so that I could have a huge sink. Everything turned out better because I could work with the contractor and cabinet maker on-site and in real time. And it didnt cost more. That being said, custom may not be for everyone, but since I had really specific goals and a difficult floor plan, it was a great choice for me. Take a look at how you work, how you approach the design and build process, and talk to your general contractor about his experience with custom cabinets. Having a general contractor who works well with the custom cabinet maker is critical to a successful outcome....See MorePros/cons of counter height vs 2 tier bar height island?
Comments (4)I have 2 tiered at our lake house and counter height at home. I love each of them in their respective spaces, and I think a lot depends on your layout & how you plan to use the island. Our home island seats four - not all lined up, but 2 stools on each of a short & long end. It is a single top slab -no prep sink/cooktop - and is essentially our everyday eating spot. It's open to a sunroom/seating area so I can chat with anyone sitting there without them being on top of me while I work. At the lake house the bar height helps denote the space between the kitchen & LR in the open floor plan. We entertain casually there and the higher tier works well as a place to put out appetizers and drinks while still allowing the counter height level to continue to be used for food prep. One thing to consider is whether small children will be sitting at the island regularly. Bar height stools can be hard to climb onto and rather high up for toddlers & pre schoolers. My Dad who is in his mid 80's finds my counter height seating easier to manage than bar height. Just some thoughts to consider....See MoreMicrowave Drawer: pros vs cons
Comments (7)Another pro: If you have to stir something part-way through or just need to check it, just open the drawer, reach down & stir/look, close the drawer. No need to take the food out or reach deep inside to stir. If you're tall, there's a lot less bending over or squatting down than a regular MW in an alcove. Sharp makes them all...so if you see a much higher priced Dacor, Viking, etc., know they're basically the same. The only differences are the exterior "look" and some rearranging of functions. There might be an "extra" function on some of them, but then you lose one of the other functions. My recommendation is to purchase the Sharp, not one of the re-badged. There are two sizes: 24" & 30". They're exactly the same size inside, the 30" has more filler. Oh, and the newer ones are a bit taller so you can fit a tall coffee cup (20oz?), but the rest of the dimensions are the same (width & depth). BTW....Here are the two current threads discussing under counter MWs. Both include pics and/or discussion about MW drawers. Thread: type of microwave for in island? Thread: undercounter microwaves - pics please?...See MoreSS vs. Chrome faucet Pros & Cons
Comments (10)I once read that chrome is a more durable faucet finish, and it also happens to be the cheapest! Years ago, chrome plated faucets became more favored and replaced nickel plated faucets because nickel plate wore off so quickly. I have to admit that despite all the choices in faucet finishes, I still like chrome. It is timeless, clean looking, and sparkly. On the other hand, a metal with a blue tint like chrome is not always the best choice for the sink and/or counter top color or design scheme. For instance, Tuscan or French Country. I ordered, but have not yet installed the Brizo Floriano faucet in stainless steel. I saw the faucet on the program "I Want That," and did want it! I was conflicted about stainless steel, chrome(love the sparkle), or brushed nickel. The deciding factors were that stainless steel or brushed nickel looked best with a stainless steel sink, and brushed nickel was not offered with the Brizo Floriano faucet. The decision for stainless steel became easier. I actually hunted, and hunted, and hunted for a deep, wide single bowl stainless steel sink that would allow me enough room to use that honking huge, organic looking faucet. I don't think people usually pick out their faucet before their sink. Couldn't believe how much my husband wanted me to find a way to use that faucet. Chrome and stainless steel finishes will show more "stuff" than brushed nickel, and brushed nickel has a warmer undertone. So, if the decision is between stainless steel and chrome, and they both require about the same amount of maintenance; I guess you have to go with which finish you find most visually appealing for your individual kitchen....See Morekitykat
