I will have outlets on each end of my island, and there is a drawer in both spots. The electrician says it's not a problem--apparently they have special shallow outlets for this kind of installation.

What you DO need to think about (if your counter overhangs the base at all) are code issues. I discovered, much to my annoyance, that code requires that the counter extend less than 6" where you are putting an outlet. This required some creative thinking on my part because I want an outlet where there is a 12" overhang.

I have island outlets mounted on the sides of my pull-out trash bin cabinets. My trash bin pulls out the narrow side of my island, so the outlet is located on the working side.

We have plugmold on each end of the island, but we have very little overhang.

daki -- love your cabinetry, granite and plugmold! Are there more pictures of your kitchen somewhere? I'd love to see them. What is the name of your granite? Are those legs or posts on the corners of your island? Is that black plugmold? Sorry for all the questions, but those colors of yours are just like ours!

Sorry, daki -- I should have checked first (usually do) . . . . I see your gorgeous juparana delicatus in some older posts. Very nice-looking kitchen.

Mine is on one end of the island, under the overhang. If you look closely at the island in the picture (linked), you can see the outlet. It's below a drawer and behind the trash pull-out - doesn't interfere with either one.

Ditto what mmme said; my builder says there are shallow electrical boxes for this kind of installation. I will have receptacles on both sides of my island, along with a light switch on one side, under the standard 1.5-inch granite overhang.

Code varies state to state, and often even town by town. In my town, you can't put a plug in if the overhang is greater than 6". But your town's code might be different. Just ask the electrician.

The solution my builder came up with is to have a little box for the outlet built out from the side of the island so that the outlet faces the working side of the island where there is only a 1" overhang. It will probably look a little odd, but I'm pretty sure it will not be that noticeable--and even then only from the working side of the island. I'm checking with the electrician to see if we can use plug mold there, which will make it almost invisible.

Bump - on the subject of plugmold, does it look "bad" when it is on a more visible side of an island? Mine will be on the side of my island that faces the DR. I have light maple cabinetry, so not sure how that will look?

Can't look any worse than an outlet, right? Also, if you happen to have stainless appliances your fixtures, maybe you could get the stainless plugmold.

This pic shows where my outlets are (there is one in the same place at the opposite end, as well). These outlets required the shallow outlet boxes. I only use them to plug in my laptop, so placement wasn't much of an issue for me. I have an outlet inside my island for the microwave. I also have a lightswitch on the far side. I plan to get cherry switchplates one day to make them less noticeable, but they really don't bother me much.
