Here is the image posted bigger so people can see it. Just off the top of my head, it seems that the transitional space between the garage and great room should be a mudroom area, possibly with room for pantry items (but if you have kids you will probably want all that space for a mudroom.) Then the lower right of the GR space would be the kitchen -- so you can carry groceries from the car right into the kitchen. That would put the dining area in the upper right corner and the living space along the left side of the space. It would probably help to reorient the door from transitional space into GR to swing the other way (into the transitional space) and move it as far to the left as you can so you have more wall space in the lower right corner of the GR. To help people help you, please post all measurements (window and door sizes; distance corner to window; distance b/w windows, etc.) Also please post more about you and how you want to use your space: Kids? How many? How many cooks? Do you like to entertain? How much do you cook? How big is your table? Any other priorities, e.g. taking advantage of a view; building considerations for elderly or less abled folks; cooking for large groups; etc. Once you can post an image with detailed measurements and your list of priorities / info, I'd also recommend the kitchens forum for really good layout help.

First, thanks again for all of your replies; they are great! I put some thought into your comments and tried to revise the drawing with two sinks to help the zones function better. Still not perfect at all, and I have a few concerns and unanswered questions. (E.g., where should the glasses go? We get water from the refrigerator, but that's opposite side from the dishwasher.) Does this look better? In response to a few other comments/questions: We placed the desk, mud, and laundry on that "bottom" of the drawing because we can easily close off these "messy" areas with a pocket door when company is over. The top of the drawing, however, is the powder room. We thought it would be better for guests to see a pantry than our laundry mess. But a very good point was raised about people coming in/out from deck or garage and easier access to refrigerator would be at bottom of drawing. Other downside is unloading groceries from the car, but we have internalized that as a once-a-week situation and all grocery bags will be placed on island for sorting and storage. Here's the revised version:

It depends on the ceiling height of your room regarding the cabinet height. If you get rid of the cabinets (visually lighten) the sink wall, I think you can use taller cabinets on the range wall because the room will feel lighter even with the taller cabinets. You need to simplify the trim. I would make the trim the same size and feel as the stiles (or rails) of cabinet doors to visually simplify the elements that are introduced. I actually LOVE this type of look with very thin stiles (or rails I am not sure of the term) on the cabinet doors. (again, emphasizing the light) Often that is expensive because they are not stock cabinet doors. Regarding your kitchen: even though you would like your DW to be on the sink wall, I see this is counter intuitive to how an average person/kid would behave. My kids would dump dinner plates on the large counter space which would be the island.... I would be asking them to drop it next to the sink every day. My kids never stack anything on the counter when they drop off dirty dishes in the kitchen. Even adults don't stack. You see this at parties. It takes an anal retentive person like me to stack dirty dishes at a party when the entire kitchen counter has been covered with dirty dishes... With my kids, there would not be quite enough counter space around the sink to use it effectively as a clean up area. I think you would be frustrated.... (at least I would be) Regarding concrete counter top: the edges will be too heavy. Concrete edges are often 2 inches thick. The counters in these Euro kitchens are quite thin, less than 1 inch. These are standard 2 cm slabs. The thinness is what gives the sense of airiness and light feeling.

I'm not able to think in centimeters but here's a few things: I don't like the chairs on the end of the island. I think seating would go better right around the corner of the island but still down from the cooktop. If you're concerned about seating people directly behind the cooktop, close off that possibility by putting 12" deep base cabinets on the half of back of the island behind the cooktop. Maybe put the dishwasher on the other side of the sink. That way, if someone is opening the dishwasher it won't hit the person working at the cooktop. This could be ignored if only one person works in the kitchen at the same time. Do you have a double oven in the design? I was wondering if that was the blank space on the right run of cabinets. Your lights aren't centered on anything and it's not going to give you good work lighting at your sink or cooktop. Figure that out before the electrician comes. It seems that there's not a whole lot of walk space between the corner of the fridge and the corner of the cabinets next to the door. JMO, HTH
