I'm getting like that, too. I started out with different colors in each room and now find that most of my rooms are painted a tan, just in different shades. I have used two colors over and over again. I want to paint the kitchen but I can't decide if I should go tan and have everything looking the same or dare to be different and go with the deep red that I have used as an accent in other rooms. DH thinks too much is too much, although we both agree that we love our tan rooms and don't have the desire to repaint.

I guess it just depends on the person....There is no right or wrong.

People who have white walls everywhere never ask that question, and you don't have to, either. If you love the color and it works for you, it isn't too much!

Quite the contrary; I find that sticking to one color unifies the background and leaves you free to bring more color with art, etc...
Spaces are less chopped up than with multiple colors.

I think it makes your house look more cohesive and makes the owners appear more decisive. Nothing wrong with that.

I don't think so at all!! My default color is BM Wilmington Tan. In this house - I used it almost everywhere - even ceilings. I really like the cohesive feel of having almost all my rooms the same color with punches of color in my upholstery and fabrics.

Thanks for your advice. The mustard won't be in the common areas like the foyer or hallway so I guess it will be ok. DH said that the color might blend in too much with the quilt. I will work on it this weekend.

I love either one color or very similar colors but then again I went to my friends hosue and she painted every room different some with a different color accent wall and it works because of the way it is decorated.

Have you thought of shifting a bit, perhaps to Cognac? Might be more restful in a bedroom, slightly more elegant, but with the same happiness effect!

The same paint color most of the time does not look the same in different areas. For instance, if one area has more windows, higher ceilings, etc. the color can look different.

My opinion is to go for the color you like although it will most likely look different in your MB than it does in the other rooms.

If you like the color a lot, then it can't be too much! If you are like me, I tend to be drawn to a lot of the same colors over and over again. I don't recall always being like this, so I'm not sure why I am now-? But perhaps you tend to be drawn to certain harmonizing colors, so your one favored paint works well in various locations in your home.

HOyamom! I'm the same way with Green! I have the Edgewood Green in muy mitchen/great room and have seriously throught Sage in at least 3 other rooms. I say if you like it, go for it!

Restoration Hardware can do that to a person, can't it? LOL! I love all their colors and everything coordinates so beautifully. I have RH Cappuccino in nearly every room. Flax in the dining room and powder room. Latte on the ceiling. I love it this way. I say go for it!

Here are some pictures of the new bedspread. I put the mustard seed card on the bedspread along with the cognac. The mustard seed is a true match for the bedspread (goldenrod). I even brought the quilt down into the family room and held it up and it blends right in to the walls. DH says it might be too monochromatic and blend in too much - not too much contrast. I tend to agree but like I said I love the color.
Lsander - you mentioned that the mustard seed might not look the same upstairs - true but the bedroom is right above the family room so it gets the same light (SW exposure).
I am heading out to the silk supply store to see what they say about the curtains. As you can see from the pictures the windows are very close together. Not sure if I can cram two full sets in that corner. I would like sheers to go over the blinds to soften it a bit.
I know a while back I asked for advice and I did save all of them so will look them over but any new suggestions would be welcome.

I am going to bump this up just to give you more information. I went to my favorite store - silk supply and took my new quilt and pictures of my bedroom along with the picture of the windows. I think I was in the store 2 hours - good thing DH wasn't with me! LOL

Anyway, they are really good at picking out drapes to match your fabric. The first thing they asked is - what is your wall color. I told them I hadn't painted yet and they said GOOD! bc more people come in and want to find a matching fabric to the wall color when it is easier to match wall color to the fabric.

He looked at my pictures and explained something about light-medium-dark and how your eye wants to go by steps and not jump from one light to dark. I think that was what he was saying. Anyway, I showed him the mustard seed and he thought that was a great color to go with the quilt. He said you have the dark furniture - medium toned quilt and wall - so we have to go with a ligher drape for the windows.

There are some cream stripes in the fabric so in the summer I could lighten the room a little by getting a cream bedspread. He drew diagrams on my printout pictures so I could see how they would look. Amazing. But.... they are very expensive and I don't want to spend that much. So I will just get the drapes on rings and forgo the valance.

Here are some pictures of the material. He let me take a bolt home to compare in my light and I also had a big piece of cardboard that I had painted mustard seed.

This is a picture that I would like to hang either at the end of the room in the sitting room or on the wall next to the tv. I plan on getting a new cherry frame and having a cream color mat and not the blue.

As you know, I love your mustard seed! I love it in your house. I have a mustard in my entry and dining room, it's not EK, but the color is very close. I am going to paint my kitchen MS if I ever finish with the wall paper removal. (few set backs) I really like your new bedding and the fabric..I think it will look simply marvelous , you have great taste! Ree

Hi Hoyamom, I love, love, love your choice of bed linens and silk drapes. What I'm not sold on is painting the walls the exact color as the bedspread. Why not choose another color which allows the bedspread to be showcased instead of blending into the wall. I cringe asking you this because you have put a lot of thought and energy into this. If you want to stay monochromatic, you can choose a wall color that is lighter or darker than mustard seed.

BTW, I don't think you can have too much of one color in the house if that's what you love and makes you comfortable.

Sky - thanks for your suggestion. I think why I am on this site is to get an opinion from some "neutral" eyes! My DH agrees with you - he doesn't really care he will do what I like - but I think he wants something different other than mustard seed.

Do you have a suggestion as to the color for the walls? I like the richness and the depth of the mustard seed but I don't want to go darker. I could go lighter but I really just don't want white in there or cream.

When I ordered the bedspread I didn't know what color it would be (there's a thread on RH not carrying colors but just online) but I knew I wanted some sort of golden color. I was hoping it wouldn't be too yellowy and it is on the verge of too yellow and not enough gold. The drapes have a patch of yellow in there but I think overall they don't look yellow. They change color when you look at them at different angles.

I will live with the bolt this week but I need to return it Saturday and hopefully have my decision made.

Hoyamom, LOL I'm struggling with choosing paint colors and new window treatments for my house right now so I completely understand what you're doing. You probably have a master bathroom that you want to coordinate with your bedroom right? So the way I see it you have to choose if you want everything monochromatic - along the gold tones of the spread or to add another color that you bounce around both rooms. You have that gorgeous chocolate brown on the sheets and the other side of the bedpread, but it's too dark. Another choice would be to add another color such as a green or blue which would be the wall color, a pillow on the bed, towels in the bathroom etc. What colors do you have in the bathroom that you might have to incorporate in your scheme? The easiest way to pick another color is find a striped silk fabric which has your mustard seed color and another coordinating color which would be your wall color and used to spread around in both rooms. I am sorry to cause you to rethink your plans, but I guess it's best to do it now and not after painting LOL.

It would be interesting to see what EK's Bronze looked like with the, furniture, WT fabric, and bed cover. Might not be what you initially had in mind ;-), it's definitely a different perspective.

I disagree about color in "steps", assuming I understand what he meant by that comment. Value contrast, light and dark, is important because that's how we are able to register even the most subtle differences in color and identify assorted surfaces and details. Difference in hue and intensity provides the same visual information in helping us identify and "jumping" from light to dark is how we navigate through our spaces. Keeping the contrasts of various elements in a room within a narrow, tight gradient can yield one big indistinguishable mish-mash. I think balance is the objective, not "steps". An intended monochromatic room is different.

Thank you Sky and funcolors - I think I will go in a different direction with the color now. The drapes are too yellow for me. So now I am back to square one. Argggh.

Have you considered painting 3 of the walls Mustard Seed and the wall behind the bed a different color? I think you need some Photoshop help and I can't do it!

That being said, I think the MS could look very pretty in there, but I think you need an area rug to bring in other colors too. It would be very rich-looking in there to have the gold walls and bedding with a beautiful rug. Then go from there for your drapes and accents.

Beache - I would love love love to have hardwood in my bedroom but I think the cost would be too much. I have a rug on top of the rug in the sitting room and I don't like it bc it keeps rolling up every time I walk across it. When I paint and get some furniture in the sitting room the rug will be put away. It is a mauve color and doesn't go in the room at all. There are also so many walls in that space - not just 3 that you see. There's an attached sitting room, a hallway to the bathroom and then the bathroom.

Sky - you are right about incorporating another color. I thought about a red - not fire engine but a reddish burgundy - a deep tone red. That might give me some other color to play with. I am just confused. It took me so long to find a bedspread that I like and now I am questioning this one too!! I really wanted a pattern so I could pull some colors. Yes, the brown is a deep rich brown -too dark for the walls.

I do love the sheen and luxury of the drapes but like I said the material is too yellow. I will see if they might have a creamier color with more of a gold. I could soften the look of the massive gold bedspread by using it as a coverlet but then I would be buying another bedspread.
