Your fabric selection is gorgeous as are the colorations! A brown or even a taupe velvet would be ideal~I don't see velvet as being dated~velvet draperies are still being used in homes, higher priced homes. The only other color I can visualize is a much deeper hue of the blue, if you don't want to go with something in the brown family.

As for the headboard itself, I like the shape of the aqua one in the picture. The cut-off corners five it more softness~I find the others too masculine.

You really have your work cut out for you, woman! I sew, but you're tackling quite a project. It will be beautiful when you're finished, and your DD can say, 'yep, and my Mom made it!' Post pix when you're finished, please. ;o)

Wow, your fabric choices look amazing together. Are you wanting to create a soft airy look or a cozy comfy room?

With the lace detail you've added to the pillow I think a muted blue/green similar to the color on the boys pants would look great vs the chocolate which might be too heavy. I would go to the store and purchase a sample strip of the chocolate velvet you desire and other colors. Lay it together to see how they'd look.

I like the first headboard but with a more pronounced curve in the middle. I would then use a dk bronze/dk brown nailhead detail to bring the brown color from the chair onto the headboard.

I have a weakness for corded trim, especially in that color combo. Where do you plan on using it?

Actually, with the growing popularity of Mad Men, I could see a velvet headboard as becoming rather popular :)

As for paint, have you looked at the SW strip with Macadamia on it? Mac. is beautiful!

I think your selections are gorgeous. But, as one who has a severe allergy to dusting (or so I've told DH), I would worry about the accumulation of dust on top of the velvet headboard in a seldom used room. I know I get a ton of dust in a short amount of time on top of my sleigh bed. But I also have 2 cats and 2 dogs and many of my decisions are based on fur and dust. :) Could you do an upholstered headboard with a slipcover to slip off and wash? I KNOW you have the talent.

I think your choices are lovely. I'd try and find the milkiest chocolate brown you can find. Any darker and I think that it might detract from the other fabrics. I'm doing something similar as far as a headboard. I've got some graphite (more masculine bedroom) mohair and silver nailheads for it. I am also doing a more rounded headboard too. Although I love nailheads, I'm wondering if the tufted headboard would be better as it's more traditional (going along with your toile). Maybe not so many buttons as the one above. But, if she is looking for more of a modern edge- do that bronzy nailhead (still pretty traditional though). I'm weird, I hate those strips of nailheads. If you're going to put all this work into it do it the right way- individually placed heads. I do think that a nice taupey color would look pretty too and not compete with the toile (assuming that's your main focus). And with that, you'll have to think about how high your pillows are planning on going on the headboard. If they are not going to be too high on the board then I think if you could only find a dark brown, it would work. Either way, I'm sure that it will look beautiful. And, I like the contrast too. Brown velvet is pretty standard, so when she is sick of the set (god forbid), it will be a easy switchout in the future. I figure we still have several more years on this whole brown phase. I couldn't tell from the piping if that is also brown in it. And, the silk looks bronzy to me too. The chocolate brown, taupy brown, or a lighter bronzy brown would be great choices! Good luck!

Pattycakes, I'm glad you don't think velvet is dated. It's either that or taffeta, LOL, I found a real steal on some lighter milk chocolate taffeta fabric today that's pretty hard to resist, price-wise, so I may use that instead.

Pmartin, that cording is blue, brown and almond like the silk, and I'll use it on the outer seam of the duvet.

Tomorrowisanotherday, you sure know your paint - you absolutely nailed it on the recommendation of SW Macadamia! I went by Sherwin Williams today and picked up some sample strips, and the Mac matches the silk perfectly.....it's such a pretty color! I think that would be ideal for the wall color. If DD wants to go with another color, Quietitude or Rainwashed both looked great with the toile Four Seasons. It's great to have choices......

Deeinohio - great idea about making the headboard a slipcover, I'm working on that idea. The only problem with that is that I wanted to tuft the headboard, or use nailheads, and I can't do that if it slips on and off. I'm still on the fence thinking that over.

Kimiko232, I agree, a milk chocolate would be better than a deep, dark brown. I'm afraid if it's too dark that would be too strong against the lighter almond and robins egg. I'm hoping to get a soft, airy look for the room, so think I need to stay on the lighter end of the color spectrum.

Thank you all for your comments and advice. I'm learning a lot as I go. I found a tone on tone silk stripe remnant today that matches the silk in the duvet that I decided to use for the chair, instead of a darker brown. I think that will look better, especially since the walnut stain on the chair is already so dark that a darker brown would just be too much of the same color. I'll make some decisions on the upholstered headboard within the next few days, now that I have some direction.

I also think you should go with a lighter chocolate color. I like the curvier headboards with tufts or nailhead. I think velvet isn't dated and is a good idea to mix another texture into the mix.
