Do you think this would make a good potting bench

I've always wanted my own little place to keep my planting supplies. What do you think of this cabinet? Do you think it would be functional? It would be placed on a screened-in porch. The porch isn't fancy. I have a nice set of wicker furniture, but the porch also holds the firewood rack, pool toys, plastic child's picnic table ... you get the picture. I think the "rustic" (aka old and beat-up) finish would look fine for a planting bench. I could always repaint later. What do you think of the price?

If you were to store chemicals in a metal cabinet, I would be afraid of corrosion. Mom is an avid gardener. To prevent corrosion of other metal things in the garage, she stores all her chemicals (fertilizer, herbicides, pesticides, etc....she is a believer in better living thru chemicals!) in a Rubbermaid container with a pretty tight fitting lid. Other than that, I think the cabinet would make a lovely potting bench for you, either as-is or fluffed up with some Rustoleum paint to prevent further rusting.

P.S. How did you find that? I live in the same area and I can never find anything on Craigslist!

bbstx, I always say that our CL is full of junk. People on GW post pictures of their gorgeous CL finds so I hurry over to search ... and find nothing. But last night I found a TON of good stuff. Maybe people are selling things due to the economy?

But DH just informed me that his company stock has plummeted which was where our "fun" money was stashed. After all these years of being "good" and saving and not over-extending ourselves, we're back to sitting tight and not spending. I'm not even sure if I'll go for the metal cabinet.

I would like a built in screen to use with compost or worm castings. I would put a container underneath to capture the sifted material. This should easily lift out for cleaning. That would be on one end. On the other end of a long table, I would want a sink with a sprayer. I would also want a shelf above the main work area with cup hooks for having my tools within easy reach. I would not include garden tools as that is a very personal thing, everybody has their own favorites. I think the power strip is an awesome idea. Now, my creative juices are running but too bad I have far too many things to do this year.

I think that of all the appliances I've known in my life I'd have to give my parent's stainless steel coffee percolator the longevity award. I don't know when they bought it for sure, but it was back when refrigerators, stoves and the family car were rounded at the corners and had a lot of chrome and televisions were still black and white. Mid-fifties for sure. I remember Mama bursting into laughter when she made the morning coffee because this particular pot sounded like a person with irritable bowel syndrome after a supper of soup beans and cabbage. When plugged in, it began it's mantra of OOOOOHHHHHHHHhhhhhhh,mmmmmmmmmmmmmm, chugga, chugga, chugga" enough it served as an alarm clock to the rest of the family. Of course it became a family joke and earned itself the nickname of 'The Groaner'. It got retired the first time when automatic drip coffeemakers came into fashion in the seventies. The groaner then lived on a shelf in my parent's basement and came out of retirement frequently as the cheap (and not so cheap)modern plastic pots my parents bought bit the dust. Then the groaner came to live with me for awhile each time my plastic pots bit the dust and it served faithfully until retired back to it's place on my parent's basement shelf when I eventually got around to buying new pots. It was still recalled to active duty, like a reserve soldier, when my daughter grew up and moved away from home. The groaner is still alive and in semi-retirement almost sixty years later. We still call it by name into the fourth generation. It has survived so long that perks are now coming back in style and I may ask my daughter to dig it out so press it back in to service. The expensive machine I bought less than a year ago leaks and I took it apart to see why. The leak is caused by a cheap seal, probably costing the manufacturer less than a penny. It is not covered in the warranty, nor can you buy a replacement seal from them. I am sure the manufacturer knows they have a problem with this component. I suspect they expected the seal to hold out a couple months longer until the warranty was void and then they wouldn't care and tough luck consumer. Gone are the days when you can expect your product to last any longer than when its warranty, and actually you are lucky if it lasts that long.

Yes i do! I actually have some design sense and wanted to be an interior designer. I installed new Espresso color thick carpet in my whole condo, i loved the color, sheen and the way it hid the stains. Lol im bad i know, but i had light color carpet before and it was a mess to keep clean, to the eye. Only problem was when i installed the Espresso color carpet was that my walls were bright white and i didnt like the contrast, the dark brown per say and the white walls, just looked odd to me and bugged me, Finally i gave in and put color on the walls! Reason i say all that is, if the walls are not white, go for it. Maybe re think the color of the walls as to me, the silver of the washer and silver of the walls might clash with one another, if just not the perfect, complementing shades. You could do a creamy rich, off white, like vanilla. What i did in picking the colors for my living room and bedrooms was, i went to home depot, i picked out all the colors that immediately caught my eye. Then i took home two or three of the same paint swatches home, taped them together, then taped them on the wall to be painted, in different areas, to see which color i like better. It was better for me than using one swatch of color and trying to decide on a big blank white wall. So i used three and taped them together and made the swatch 50 % bigger! Its up to you in the end and what you like. But i do think the espresso will work very well with the silver, or graphite appliances, just a little weary on silver walls. I used the Berh paint and primer in one, used less coats and the color came out very nice! The green is, chinese jade and the yellow is, pyramid gold. I had to put into mind all the colors i already had, the carpet, my couch, coffee tables, dining table. This is also what i did, i fine tuned into what colors i wanted for the walls, then i took other swatches, for instance, i have white baseboards, so i got a white swatch, i have a orange couch, so i got an orange swatch, i have espresso carpet, so i got an espresso colored swatch, then i put them all next to the color of the wall swatch, to see how well they all mixed together! And to me, the colors couldnt have fallen into place any better. Also made my condo feel more like a house, more like me, more personlized! Imagine the walls in the photos before, white! What a big different a little color can do!

We used it for a corner "foot bench". It's not very big, but it seems very sturdy. I would feel confident standing on it without it crashing to the ground. You should still use the Schulter waterproofing material (i can't remember it's name) to wrap it.

I know when times are tough each little expense seems like a big outlay, but I love that cab and think it would make a great potting bench. Maybe you could offer them a little less. I think it's a great piece and you may not find another like it (but then I'm a sucker for old cabs).

I got an old metal cab that had the double doors and 6ft tall. I had to sand it and prime with rustoleum and then paint. It was a LOT of work. also I made the mistake of using the reg rust color of primer. I never dreamt how much white paint it was going to take to cover the red color ! Whew it is not cheap. I wanted out local car body shop to do the whole thing,that is the best way to get it doen right..they have all the sanding and spray stuff there. They were too busy so I thought I could do it. I am glad it is done. I think 100.00 is alot if you are going to redo the paint ...it is not cheap to get all the spray paint for a project that size. Good luck and I hope your finances turn around...we are getting in the same boat....c

I have one in my garage now. Was used in the nursery, and then in my sons bathroom. I think you can do better on the price. $100 is a lot for that condition.

BTW - Our stock has plumeted, too. ;(

I think its perfect for a potting table, and maybe you can offer less. and I feel your pain re stocks etc. us too.

Just "butting in" to say that I also think it is not worth what they are asking considering its poor condition. For not much more money you can get a new potting bench that will allow you to store chemicals. On the other hand, if you think you will enjoy refinishing and repainting, especially if you like decorative painting, it has excellent potential.
