Upstairs Carpeting What do you have and are you happy with it?

Please share what type of carpeting you have upstairs?

We have all hardwood floors downstairs and short cut pile off white carpeting upstairs. We've lived in the house 5 years but the house is 20 years old and I think it may be the original carpet.

The previous owners were empty nesters so it was is very good condition when we moved in 5 years ago. The only problem we noticed when we went for the final walk through were dark gray lines along the baseboard.

I have researched this on the internet and it is called carpet filter soiling. Basically the carpet acts as a filter and catches all of the dirt as air flow goes up behind the wallboard.

They say it can appear even with the best housekeepers.

SO my delimma is do I get a darker carpet that will camafloge it if it comes right back?

I have brought home samples of frizees with speckles but they either read too orangy or too purpley.

I really like the short pile in off white because it goes with any color walls. We don't have pets and my children don't really spill anything up there anymore....its the dark gray lines that are my biggest concern.

What do you have upstairs and are you happy with it?

We have a tobacco colored frieze carpet throughout our upstairs. It is a little darker than 'tan' but not as dark as 'brown'. I might not recommend that style of carpet as sometimes things can get lost in it (like a shag carpet). If I could re-carpet I'd go with a pile I think. Maybe add a frieze rug in spots...

On the other hand, I'm not sure the gray around the baseboards would bother me in the slightest if the rest of the carpet is in good shape. But that is just me...poor housekeeper who can thankfully afford help! LOL.

We love our carpet. It's just a typical pale, almost white...tan color. Very dense, about 3/8" high pile. Wears like iron, easy to clean. Soft and warm on your feet. Very neutral.

My GF put in brown carpeting and her cats drag kitty litter around on their feet....it shows up really well!

I just had an extensive discussion with the owners of an long established HVAC business regarding zoning. Their take was avoid it if you can. Zoned systems cost more to install than non-zoned systems. They have more components to go wrong, and they have to have a provision to dump the excess capacity back to the return when only one zone is calling. That results in additional cycling over what would occurred if the entire house was a single zone balanced with manual dampers. It can also result in short inefficient run times when only a single zone calls. Multiple HVAC systems for a house are whole 'nother story.

Do you have any 'happy accident' stories to share?

I don't know if I would call them happy accidents, but a few times, the item I've ordered doesn't show up looking exactly like my order. Maitland-Smith was especially bad. However, after I've waited months for an item to arrive, I'll usually make it work rather than start over. Luckily, most of the differences have still fit into my color scheme.

Do you have a pull-out trash and are you happy with it?

I love my trash pull-out under the most-used prep space, near the range, but we have rules about what can be deposited there. I also have a big metal can with a lid, in the mudroom--anything questionable goes in that can, and the kitchen trash gets emptied into it when necessary, then the bag from big can is taken out to the rolling trash cans. The lidded can in the mudroom is also convenient for kids bringing trash from their vehicles. Pulling out the trash bin or lifting the lid on the metal can takes about the same amount of energy. We compost all plant waste.

We have a frieze as well. Love it. Has cream, caramel, brown and a touch of black in it. What I love about it most is the way it feels under foot. Warm, soft and cozy. I didn't think it was true when told this but it cleans super easy. We have a cat that got sick on it a couple of times and with a little detergent and water it came right up.

As far as wear goes, there are different grades that can help with that, ours is middle of the road and has done well, but we don't have kids and the cats aren't allowed up there anymore. I haven't lost anything in it either, but again that could be an issue maybe depending on the grade or thread length chosen.

We love ours, have had no regrets and now I'm planning on getting a large piece to use on the hardwood floors in the living room.

I had the same problem with the white carpet in my master area. It was very high quality carpet put in by the prior owners 20 years earlier and worked well with our furnishings. After I changed carpet cleaners to one highly rated on Angies list, local, not a franchise, 90% of the dark edges were gone! I explained the issue to the young man who was cleaning the carpets and he took the time to carefully work on all of the edges. The difference was almost unbeliveable!

When we were selling the house we "updated" the carpet with a cheap tan frieze which won't look good for long and didn't feel good in bare feet but hey...it was the look 30ish buyers wanted and we didn't have any trouble selling the house.
