My friend Kelly just started a new blog that's about authentic living, resonance, holistic thinking about space and living environs, etc. etc. I can see the direction she's taking with The Brave New Home aligning with some of the broader concepts in The Secret.

I'm so glad that at least one person here knew what I was talking about. I decided to post this question yesterday. I was painting my daughters' room and listening to The Power audiobook (sequel to The Secret) and it suddenly occurred to me that sharing decorating tips with other LOA folks might be very productive.

Recently, I posted on here looking for some inspiration to do something around my house again. Somehow I found it, and I began to clean and organize my extremely cluttered office. This space had become really messy after I lost my job that required a home office and started working outside of the home full time. Since that time, I have been struggling to find another job that allowed me to work part of the time at home. I have had countless inteviews and disappointments.

As I was cleaning out the space, it hit me like a ton of bricks: I needed to prepare for my new job that I will surely be offered. Keeping my office messy must be getting in the way. Long story short, I have now had a string of interviews with a new company and (fingers crossed) I anticipate a job offer for the perfect job any day now.

Awesome LOA story, love it! There is definitely a fine line between decorating for the life you have now (a classic MAGNAVERDE "rule") and keeping your space prepared and ready so you can really live from it, not just in it, for the life you want.

Some really in depth, contemplative discussion to be had about how surroundings reach beyond the walls of home or work influencing other corners of life, living.

I'm also familiar with The Secret and I've been thinking it's time to bring it out again. I didn't know about The Power, so I'll have to check it out.

I think the author of the "review" posted intended for it to be mocking, funny. While it references The Secret I don't think it actually has anything to do with what creekylis was getting at with regard to the general idea of Law of Attraction, how clutter and disorganization can affect more than we sometimes think it does, etc.

Yes, Oprah did have something about it awhile ago but Law of Attraction is an old concept. The Secret and others like Esther Hicks (Abraham) brought it mainstream a couple years ago or so but it's a New Age point of view that's not really all that new.

I am not familiar with The Secret. I do, however, believe in setting yourself up for success. If you want to loose weight, for example, remove junk food from the cupboards, have veggies in the fridge, create a space for exercise and remove other, unhealthy distractions. Success in school depends on an appropriate space for studying. Memorable parties may need a functional kitchen and comfortable place to enjoy food and friends. So if you want to be slim and healthy, you want your kids to do well in school, and you want friends to rsvp to your events, you need to create a home in which those things can happen. That said, your home can function for these activities without being trendily decorated, unless the people you want to socialize with judge friendships on style. My grandma's house was hideously out of date, but very clean, comfortable and functional. We made many memories there.

Terricks....funny! I've never heard of this book...but positive thinking is a general genre for a LOT of self help books.

I do believe that we get what we (really) expect--not necessarily what we say we want/expect, but what we feeeeeel. I'd been reading New Thought (all the old dudes) for years before I heard it from The Secret DVD.

When I found out we were relocating, I starting thinking and "living" in my new home in my mind. I even wrote some things down, both about the new house and selling the old one. Several months later I came across the stuff about selling the old house and was amazed at how close I was to it all (it sold for asking price in 1 week). Same thing with the new house--it's the same almost to a "T".

I also love Dr. Wayne Dyer's The Power of Intention which is also along the lines of LOA. I have always believed/recieved in the principle but never knew what it was called until The Secret aired on Oprah, and then I saw Dyer on PBS, and had to know more. To keep this on a decorating topic though, I do have to say many times along the journey of re-habbing my 1850's home "people" have magically appeared with the solution to a problem we were working on. I think Craigslist has the power of the LOA, if I need "it" "it" appears!!! =D

As a follow up to my above post, I received my formal job offer today. The home office chair will be warm again soon! :-)

Using The Secret is how I got my house. Ever since I read it I have been having so much fun getting things I want. It was an amazing feeling to see things falling into place when DH and I were going through the process of buying our house. Money and people and ideas and help all seemed to be there when we needed it. It does take action though and being able to ask questions here is one way to do it. Isn't it funny how you can ask for help on something and amazingly someone will have just the right answer or source that you were looking for? Then you look back and say "wow" I can't believe how I was able to make my vision happen. People do it all the time. It's just that "The Secret" gave a name to it.

I'm a believer and a skeptic, both. In my experience we do create much of our own realities and have tremendous power in our lives. But another reality is that sh*t happens. It happens to positive people, it happens to prepared people and sometimes it can knock those people flat. If The Secret, or other books of that type, spark positive changes then that's wonderful - we all need different resources. And sometimes we need support of a different type and there are books like When Bad Things Happen to Good People.

I believe in positive thought because is motivates us to take action on the things we want. Why can't we just chalk good things up to being strong, resourceful people and not to some kind of outside mystical force?

I have two mottoes in life:

"The universe rewards action"

"If wishes were horses, beggars would ride".

Works for me!

I view "the secret" and other positive thinking methods as simple tools that enable people to have a clear focus on what they desire, hence the results come because of that. A scrapbook with pictures that represent what you want is another tool, writing down your objectives and reading it every day is another tool, the Secret is a more dramatic way , it enabled the author to make millions
by marketing it in a way that people think they found a Secret. If that what it takes , so be it. It's all good.

So how does this work for the people starving in Africa? They just aren't visualizing food properly?

I agree completely, Olychick. The Secret seems to work only for those who already have plenty.

I think everyone has had similar questions with regard to Law of Attraction (LOA). The one slice offered up mainstream known as "The Secret" might not be the only, or maybe even the best, resource to turn to for answers to the tougher questions.

LOA is kind of a complicated concept to get your head around - at least I think so. :) It's not a basic, magic wand prescription for all that ails the world. It's bigger than that and at the same time it's so very simple.

I do think Esther Hicks (Abraham-Hicks) does a nice job of addressing LOA and the other side of the coin that's not just about visualizing being skinnier, the perfect house, or dream job, etc.

Yes Kelly, I am a fan of the Amazing Randi, and Penn and Teller and others who base their decisions on proven facts.

As far as "The Secret" and the LOA, I do believe that people react positively to those with positive attitudes. No one wants to hang out with "Debbie Downer". However, it is also true that bad things can happen to people with positive attitudes. There are some things that you can't just "think away".

You know who else addresses taking responsibility and being accountable for what you bring into your own experience instead of blaming other people or "just bad luck" is Ekhart Tolle. I forget which one came first, The Power of Now or The New Earth, but he's another one that got Oprah'ed after he wrote a book about awareness/awakening.

His personal journey of difficulty and how he came "out the other side" is interesting.

Byron Katie is another one. Her story bored me a little, so I don't remember everything she experienced but I do find some of things she has to say, her new outlook, interesting too.

I know there are stories of people victorious over adversity. My problem with some of these popular "concepts' is that it somehow makes it seem like anyone can overcome whatever using the powers of the universe and/or mind. I think it somehow appears to lay blame on those who are unable to/who have no resources and it appears to me to be an exercise that can seldom be used or even concieved unless one's belly is full. There are masses of starving/aids infected human beings around the world and if these concepts worked, their bellies would be full...or does that mean that they have failed? Just my humble opinion that it is the rhetoric of the privileged. No offense to anyone intended.

It's not about laying blame and it has nothing to do with privilege - according to my understanding of LOA and etc. I feel confident with that statement. As far as adversity, I don't know. Have to think about that one. I'm not certain because -I think- if your alignment with LOA and etc. has the correct focus, it wouldn't (shouldn't) have anything at all to do with giving attention to adversity directly or indirectly.
