I feel like i need t quote Seinfeld when I say, 'NOT that there's anything wrong with it, but I Googled 'Roman shade with wood blinds' and then just 'Roman Shades', thinking there might be some images to show you, but I didn't find any.

I'd be concerned about the inside mount shades, as they do sound like they'd be very tight against the blinds.

Thanks my3dogs -your post made me laugh! I googled it and came up empty too, which certainly gives me pause.....
I've been trying to analyze my goal for this room and window. I prefer to have the blinds hanging all the way down in the open position 90% of the time. This house is new construction, built about 20 years ago. The windows look like divided light windows, but are not actually divided -the windows have metal strips, about 1 inch wide, running both horizontally and vertically, to create the look of panes. It's very common here in the Houston area, but I have never cared for it. So I prefer to obscure the window with the blinds, rather than have to stare at these fake divided panes.

At the same time, I'd like to add some fabric to the window. This is my son's bedroom, but he is only here a few months a year anymore, so it is transitioning into a guestroom/extra bedroom. The window is six feet across, the sill is about 2 feet off the floor, and it directly across from the door into the room. I wouldn't mind just doing some kind of a valence I suppose, but they seem almost old-fashioned now?

If you are worried that a valance might seem old fashioned, what about simple panels on either side of the window?

A fixed roman shade is essentially a valance. Trying to do an inside-mount valance and wood blind is the twist to this story.

I think you could work out the logistics of getting them both inside the framing, but the valance might need to protrude. As an alternative, you could do an outside mount of the roman shade that still exposes some of the framing on the top and sides.

I'm a big fan of Roman shades, and for your windows with blinds, I'd hang them at the ceiling, wide enough to sit just a hair beyond your trim, and projecting out far enough to clear your blinds when they are open.

Then you could cover only the top of the trim and the blinds, which would make your ceiling look higher, and still let in as much light as possible.

Since 80% of natural light comes in through the top 20% of windows, covering only a little of the actual window glass can darken a room quite dramatically.

terriks, those first 2 don't look faux, but real, given the amount of fabric stacked.

I don't have blinds but I did make faux hobbled roman shades for my family room and breakfast nook if that helps. I did the outside mount as an inside mount would hide the muntins in the windows and I like them so I didn't want to cover them. I don't see anything old fashioned about valances on windows since I love fabric and often use the color of the fabric to drive the rest of the room. I think it warms up the space and knocks down the echo that often accompanies rooms without window treatments.

Also, there is a M'Fay pattern that is a little different. The number is 9219. I saw the pattern in my pattern book. I have not used the pattern. I will probably create something from the pictures and not buy a pattern.
