Faux roman shade over wood blinds?

Have any of you seen this before?

I have wood blinds over my large kitchen window. I want to add a little texture and color to the area so I thought of making a faux roman shade instead of just using a plain valance.

The room faces west so we need the blinds for the afternoon sun. DH does not want to get rid of the blinds altogether. If I go with a shade or valance I will move the large vase in the window.

(We just got a new stove, microwave and frig and the mis-matched white dishwasher will eventually be replaced so please don't look at it :) )

Or, should I just leave it as it is?

why not simply make a "mock" roman shade style of valance? stapled onto a 1 x 2 and attached to the upper front window area with L brackets?

ps. your dishwasher looks fine. there is no need to make apologies

CB, I'm making a roman like valance for a client. We're just waiting on the fabric. I think it's a great idea. Funny I'd not heard of this being done before and now with in a week I've heard it twice. I think it will look great.

I'm not committed to the wooden blinds at all. I don't like them pulled all the way up because they take up too much of the window. I've never been a fan of drapes but they do create a softer look and maybe I would like them now. I had light-blocking Hunter Douglas Duettes in my last house and liked them but they did show light around the edges at night. Also, they blocked out so much light if I wanted privacy during the day and I didn't like that. I had Silhouettes in our former living room and I liked the versatility of having them filter the view/sun or opening them completely. I think now they are offered in top-down bottom up which is even better. I guess I could get them for the bedroom and add drapes just for night when I wanted to block the light. Wonder how that would look? Anyone have that setup? I guess I want it all!! LOL This is helping me think through things -- good questions!!! Thanks so much!!! Yogacat - what a good idea! I just looked and I could move the wood blinds out and put a roller behind but I also looked at the blinds and they really don't look that great. I think I'm moving toward removing them. Looking at the pics makes me want to remove the light fixture too!!! Then there is paint, bedspread, lamps, etc. Oh, it never ends.

Not sure why the room is coming across as dark. It is hard to photograph due to shooting into the light. I do agree that the blue won't be that noticeable until you get close to the fabric but I really love the trim. I looked at hundreds of fabrics. It was so hard to find something with blue and brown that wasn't too white or cream. I am trying to warm up the room because it is very large and doesn't feel cozy at night (although the new rug is really helping with that). I did get a sample for a pleated shade from Smith and Noble that matched the trim pretty well. I like how the pleated shade would be practically invisible during the day but worry that it might be busy looking at night though when it is down. Any thoughts?

Andee-Yes thankfully the wood trim is in very nice condition and I do like the look of the inside mount. No, I do not need the privacy as the view is of our side yard and the front walk. The only one who looks out that window is the dog and he stands on the fireplace hearth to do it! Annie-Can you elaborate on how you sewed your shades so that the stitching was hidden? I could sew a pocket on the top of the shade to insert the rod so that I could keep the inside mount. Also, there are between the glass blinds in the window which can be opened and closed, but not raised and lowered. I can remove them and thought I would as I think it may look better without them. Thanks for the links; they were helpful. The shades in the photos I saw earlier were shorter, almost like a valance, but I think I could adjust these. We have roller shades in all our bedrooms because we like it dark in the early morning. I am thinking about making some of these to hide the ugly roller shades.

Just this past winter we replaced our full Roman shades
with Roman shade valances. I don't have them over blinds
but do have them over shades in our family room. The shades
are always up, and are mainly used for daytime tv watching
when necessary. We also made Roman shade valances for our LR & DR
for the windows, and on top of that -- festoon and jabots. Sounds over the top, but really looks nice.
I'll get you a pic of the den windows.

Do you always keep the blinds down in the kitchen, or just at night?

I'm not crazy about the look of vertical lines (the Roman shade) layered over more vertical lines (the blinds). Usually layering looks better to my eye like the photo of the bedroom above shows. I agree some fabric treatment would be a nice touch there, tho, just maybe something different?

What if you played off your wall decor and tried a "natural shade". You would gain texture and it would work well with your other decor. Some of the natural shades drape like romans. I like Bali Blinds. They have a great selection and they have some online tools and a free mobile app you can use to make your selections. They also send free swatches.

I think a fabric valance of some kind would add needed color and pattern to your kitchen. However, it would compete with that art piece above the window so I would remove that.
I would add a bowl and/or canisters etc. that pick up on a color in the valance to your counter tops...
