Photographing Interiors

I would like to post some photographs of various aspects of my house to get advice. However, whenever I photograph anything in the house, I just think it looks pitiful.

Last week, I finally hung the kimono that DH's dad brought back from China at the end of WWII. DD helped and we thought it looked great. I took a picture to send my sister, and it looked small and lonely on the wall, but not in real life.

Among other things, lighting always seems to be off.

Anyone have tips on how to make my photos look better? My choices of cameras are my iPhone and a point and shoot digital camera.
