did I really mess up this old lamp??

It was $8. I have seen them restored for $$$. I wish I had not rubbed with steel wool and Brasso...sigh BIG sigh...it had a patina...now I am faced with this. It is magnetic. So is it plated...have I messed that up? Sophisicated Solutions in Bronze next to replace patina look ? What ? I am going to use Paxton for the rewire etc. It is a wonderful lamp if I don't ruin it first...sigh...Any advice will be appreciated. c

There are products to create patina. Van Dykes has some and could probably help you figure out what would work. Here's one product:

It's STILL a beautiful lamp! But...you're supposed to use the magnet before the Brasso and steel wool! :-)

I'd say get it nice and clean and head for the Rub N Buff, if the surface has a bit of 'tooth' to it. It probably does since you used the steel wool on it. Just mask off the marble parts and wipe on small amounts of your choice of color in the R&B. Try not to get it in the grooved areas and buff off quickly so you can get nice color, but still have the nice designs in the metal. Truly, this can be an easy fix!

Christi and Newbienew, First of all I have been remiss in not welcoming both of you to the African violet forum. Your steering towards dangerous waters here. Many a person has started out with one or two violets and gotten sucked into a full blown addiction. Violets are more addictive than crack in my opinion. lol Any way back to the questions. Christi, As to your first question, Newbienew had the correct answer. Yes. I would use just a regular plastic pot. None of that self watering stuff. If your yogurt cup is big enough then poked some holes in the bottom and use that if it is aesthetically pleasing enough for you. I really don't know what size yogurt container were talking about here. As long as the container's the right size you can use anything you want that's plastic or ceramic. I would stay away from Terra Cotta clay pots for now. Yes, you're going to have to mess with the root ball it it's too small for the pot it is intended for. Try to get some of the potting soil out of the root ball and then plant it in moistened potting medium. Then I would put the whole thing, plant, pot and all, in a plastic bank and seal it. Leave it in the plastic bag for about a week and then slowly open the bag over a period of a day. That will acclimate it to the dryer humidity again. Now I'm assuming again that you're going to mix your potting soil with equal parts perlite here. You're already starting out at ground level by having one or two violets. It doesn't get much simpler than that. What Newbienew is doing is a little more complicated. Just keep asking questions if you don't understand what you're doing. That's what we're here for. My Mother winter sowed one thing. Tomatoes, seeds she saved every year from her best tomato plants. Sun dried them and saved until late fall early winter. She had an old wash tub filled with sand, garden soil and A little manure from the old pile by the barn, all mixed together. This old tub was leande up against an old oak tree on the north west side of the house where it didn't get much direct sunlight This she would work up and scatter couple hundred seeds and cover them with more sand and forget them. This was in the hills of north west arkansas which I think is still zone 5. Anyhow come spring they would come up and if it was going to be really cold they might get a couple of burlap bags tossed ovwer them, however mostly they survived on their own, And she always had plants for ourselves and to give away also.This was my first experience with winter sowing and I didn't even realize it until I seen This web site. This was over 60 + years ago and this was the way most people did those kind of things. Just reminising over days gone by. So no I don't think you messed up. Mothernature seeds in fall and plants come up in spring and frost doesnt really bother them if done natures way. and as some one said you can always cover them up and it doesn't take anything really heavy. jim

No, you were right first time on the Mariposa with 66". We were talking about changing the walls by flipping the relevant studs so give a little more room, or moving the whole wall out a couple of inches which we could do.... for a price. I think the problem is we are doing too much at once - kitchen, bathroom, a ton of painting and stuff in other rooms, painting the whole outside of the house, about to have a baby, deal with a pool for the first time and just moved in. I am probably not on top of the details in the way I should be. There are just 10 million decisions that have to be made all at once. Really struggling with tile decisions too. I am trying to stay as on top of it as I can but it's hard to catch all these details. Do you have any comments on the size of the vanity? We need to decide between a 60" or 72" vanity. For reference this is a big house - the master bath is surprisingly small for the sie of the home. The other two bathrooms both have double sinks.... and both will be bigger than the master bath sinks, no matter what we do. The guest bathroom has a 92" vanity (which is a bit big TBH, we need 2 of everything we share because we can't reach the other side), and the small bathroom has a 77" vanity. did not find a "Kaspersky Anti-virus 6.0(under remove) You might want to use windows search, advanced and search kaspersky If you find its folder look in it for an uninstaller. 2.How do i close Regestry Cleaner? It looks like a very pretty lamp, and there is almost always something that can be done. :)

I used Sophisticated Finishes on my French metal bed, and I was pleasantly surprised. It creates a very high-end finish for a small price. You might try a small place first to be sure that it does what you're desiring. If you do use SF, get the clear primer/sealer, also...the finish will adhere better.

my3dogs: ummm I did do the magnet 1st...what was I supposed to do when I saw the magnet stick ?? I know ....post a pic and ask what do do...right on one...next time I will ! What a dunce.:(

Southern I have SF in bronze and the primer...I got it yesterday . So I cleaned the pole and the top with only Pam amd steelwool and it is gawjus...I had done the base that way and then messed it up. So what I want is the base to be back like it was...sigh...wait 50 years. And to match the top . I primed a minute ago. It is HOT here today so it is dry asap.

Ok I am going to go try this on a tiny place and then post the results...or you can roll down a window and listen to me ^&^*(()_)/ . THANK YOU C

I'm going to check out Sophisticated Finishes. I have never heard of them before.

When the magnet sticks, it means it is NOT brass, so any finish can be rubbed off, rather than you making it shine.
If it is solid brass, and does not have a lacquered finish, you can polish it and it won't hurt it. It'll take off the patina, but give it a soft glow.
