Will these floors and cabinets work together (pic)?

Hello,

I was wondering if anyone had any opinion on putting these floors and kitchen cabinets together. Our actual cabinets will probably be a bit lighter than in the photo (and a more flat, modern design with less molding). Really appreciate any input... getting close to decision time!

Oh, and while on the subject; strong blue (cobalt?) backsplash yea or ney?

It's so hard to tell with monitors and color variances, but on my monitor the cabinets look a bit too gray to go great with the flooring. You said they will be lighter, so that might work fine with the flooring but at least to my eyes, while each is gorgeous in its own right, I don't think they go great together.
And I love cobalt blue with just about anything...so I think if the cabinets are a good amount lighter and less gray, it will all work together.

You have a very pretty room with a lot of potential. I really like the color and the natural light. I think the piano could be a beautiful focal point. Will it fit between the windows? If so, move the piano between the two windows and put the collage frame over the piano. Move the sofa in front of the window wall and the large blue chair perpendicular to it with the back facing the edge of the wood floor. Then put the ottoman in front of the sofa and chair as a coffee table. Put the entertainment cabinet on the large wall with the wood chair in the corner near the window and the leather chair about where is currently is. I would also move some of the accessories from the top of the entertainment cabinet to the top of the piano - maybe the red vase and a basket. I think the basket table is too light feeling for the other furniture. If it needs to stay in the room, I would move it to the far side of the sofa so it is not as visible from the room's entry point but it will still be functional as an end table. I would also suggest breaking up the pillows. Keep three on the sofa and put one on each chair. If you can't move the tv, I would still recommend the same arrangement but swap the recommended tv and piano positions. For future furniture purchases, I like the idea of a sofa and two chairs also. It will give you a lot of flexibility to have different arrangements. I really like your windows and blinds. I would suggest putting blinds on the quad window too to cut down on glare as you watch tv and to give the windows a more cohesive look.

I'm the same as you Basil50, so I understand how hard (and overwhelming) it can be. A couple of things that might help: - Look at pictures on the internet (and here in FKB) to get a feel for what color/style combo makes your heart go "I love that!" (For instance, are you drawn to light or dark, reds/greens/browns/creams/multi, simple/busy/chunky/ or flowing like the river, etc.). - Also know what budget you want to stay within. This will help limit what stone color/types to look at and will help the sales person/fabricator make the proper suggestions for you. It will also help you not waste time looking at those those that, although beautiful, don't fit "your" target dream look or your budget. - Once you know the above, when you see something that looks like it might work, ask if you could put the slab on hold and take a square sample (or 2) home with you (make sure it has the same tones). Or maybe even take a couple of samples of the ones you like at the same time. I know this option doesn't totally resolve the dilemma of seeing the big picture, but it will at least allow you to see all of the colors together in your own home, in the proper lighting, and with no pressure or distractions from the other stones. My experience unfortunately was not so easy, which is why I am suggesting what I wish I would have known then. I went in blind so it was quite a time consuming learning process for me (the GW crew here taught me a lot too!) When it came to samples, I found that most places didn't have (or wouldn't give) samples of many of the stones I was looking at, which I found very frustrating. Making a big $ decision like this without being able to see it in my home made me very nervous. So, like you, I started bringing everything with me (2 cabinet doors - light perimeter and dark peninsula, floor tile, and even a big board with my paint color). I looked at several different slabs at several yards over the course of a few months (the hours these places have made this process a whole like longer than it had to be!). Like you, I really liked many of the stones. But 1 day after feeling pretty drained & overwhelmed, standing right before me were 2 absolutely gorgeous slabs that my eyes opened wide for. They were exactly what I had been looking for and I knew I wanted them! They were actually on hold for someone else so I asked the girl if she could call to see if they still wanted them (I think she was shocked that I asked). She made the call and lucky me they didn't so the tag was switched to my name immediately =) Since then I have never doubted my choice. My counters are planned for installation next week - I so can't wait! Good luck to you, and take whatever time you need until it "clicks" =)

Very strange my last text is no longer here or maybe it didn't post? I'd written how much I appreciate all the time, thought, research and effort everyone has put in. It has been very helpful. I took the advice of a poster above and after school went to a BM store where I thought they might have a color consultant. They had two very helpful women who suggested after seeing my pictures on this site Wickham Gray for the kitchen and gray mirage for the dining area (it looks like a moss green) Both colors are soothing. The Wicham is similiar to several of the other colors people suggested. I put large sample squares of it up on the soffit over the window and it looks blue. I like it and if my youngest wasn't coming home from college tonight I'd run out and start painting. Instead I'm going to make a comfort food dinner. Homemade mac and cheese along with roasted brussel sprouts and salad. Ever since I found out you can roast the sprouts I'm a big fan of a formerly disliked vegetable. Regarding the fridge-it's actually just a normal size one door fridge and works just fine. Maybe it shines because I gave it a good cleaning after we put down the floor! Cannot justify the expense of replacing it for aesthetic reasons. I have a kitchen cat g-d vertical flag that one of my daughters brought back from Japan and could hang it on the fridge! I think painting them white would look great. Just not a stark cool white. Im not familiar with Ballet white and would have to see it in your lighting anyways. I think a warm white that looks good with the things you are keeping, like the floor and granite would be best. The white might even bring out the details of beaded inset even more, which is really beautiful! I know many would not paint them, but I too can understand the reason why you might want to, if the room is kind of dark. Any possibility to add a skylight? Going by that first picture, I would not be able to live that almost neon gold and orange tone, so I would be wanting to either re-stain or paint myself. Maybe it is just the camera or lighting, but it's pretty overwhelming. I wonder because then in the second couple pictures, they don't look that bright gold to me at all and are actually quite pretty. However, they still do look like the wood didnt take the stain evenly because it's very blotchy in many places. Do you have any idea what kind of wood it is? Also what is your granite called? It looks like Kashmire White. What color white is your window and baseboard trim? Seems to look nice in the background with your granite and the wall color, so maybe it would work? You should definitely do some big sample boards and live with them in the space for awhile before deciding. Best wishes and please update us as to what you decide to do.

I am curious to see what others will say --- and after looking again at the pix, I think that the cabinets and backsplash go well together, the floor and cabinets are ok but questionable... but it is the backsplash and the floor which really don't jive together.
(in my opinion of course)... hope you get more comments.

Thanks for the input. For the cabinets, I'm pretty sure the grey would be a couple of shades lighter. We're also considering (very) white cabinets as well. The floor is almost a lock, but if it's a horrible idea we're willing to reconsider.

When you say "the backsplash and the floor which really don't jive together" which backsplash are you referring to... the grey one or our hypothetical blue one?

Good morning- I feel the need to state the disclaimer that I am hardly an authority on decor and colors, so I hope you get some more feedback besides mine:)

I think the floor is great and not horrible.

I guess I am not a real gray person, so maybe that is also why I am not loving the gray cabinets. I wouldn't base that decision on me for sure.

The backsplash I am referring to ("the backsplash and the floor which really don't jive together") is the one in the photo - I think after looking at the photo again, I realized that it was the backsplash that was throwing off the congruity or harmony of the floors and cabinets.(again, disclaimer here- I am hardly a decorating expert by any means. I use the forums to have the benefit of another 20 or so pair of eyes ). I still think the hypothetical blue one would be great.

I also can't claim to be an authority on decor, but I think the floors would like fine with the cabinets. I'm not a big "blue" person, so I would much prefer a backsplash like the one in the picture.

Commenting on choices is a very personal choice

I think the floor "works" however if I was starting from bottom up/gutted kitchen - Here is what I see - the cabs are in a warm palette/brown tone the floor is yellowy, orange - For me I would prefer a light walnut finish - I love the backsplash in the pic I think it creates a cohesive look in a small kitchen. While I love cobalt, I think with this palette it will Scream Look at me - I prefer a subtle look - one that is easy on the eyes, pleasing and cohesive - If I wanted a showpiece in the kitchen (which I don't) a cobalt range might be a better choic
