Another TV Placement Dilemna

Hi! I'm trying to plan my new home, and I have limited options in my furniture place in the living room. I don't care for mounting TV's over fireplaces, so I'm trying to design something that will work for good TV viewing without competing with the fireplace. Here are 2 mock-ups -- please let me know which one you like. The first one is the TV built into the cabinetry in the corner, but it loses the symmetry :

The 2nd one is just mounting on the wall (side), but it might be a little hard to view from the sofa -- Also, I'm sort of a collector of John Barber prints (maritime), and I wanted to place a larger picture on the wall, but it looks odd with the TV next to it. So right now, I'm showing a smaller print.

Any opinions on which way I should go? Also, I haven't completed decided between and 10' ceiling or cathedral ceiling, so opinions on that would be welcomed also.

I prefer the first option. Is it possible to have doors on the cabinet so that when the tv is not in use, the doors can close over it?

I vote for the 10' ceiling over cathedral. My sister once had cathedral ceilings in her house and found them very difficult to decorate with...everything seemed too small. Plus, to paint, she had to hire a painter.

I also like the first option. When the shelves are filled, the TV will seem less prominent and more a part of two interesting walls. IMO it also looks better between your two large paintings. I also like the idea of perhaps putting it behind cabinet doors.

The 10' ceiling. Whenever I spend time under a cathedral ceiling I begin to feel dwarfed by the space above me, and a bit uneasy. You have a gorgeous room which has the potential to be cozy and might lose that under a much higher ceiling.

We, too, have a big stone fireplace that is a focal point. There are windows on both sides, so no place for a tv there, either. We opted for a built-in cabinet on the right-hand wall. It is recessed, and I have shutters that close over it (although I haven't installed them yet--it's on my "to do" list). The other side of that wall is the master bedroom. So having a recessed cabinet in the living room allowed me to have a similar recessed cabinet in the master bedroom. Although we were originally going to use it as a tv area on the bedroom side, I opted to make it built-in bookshelves. A benefit to having the recessed area in the living room is having a shelf that I can display something above the tv--breakable things that I don't really want the kitties messing with. We have lighting (on it's own switch) up there, to show off whatever I'm displaying. Below the tv is another shelf where the other electronics are. There is another set of shutters to cover up all that crap...I mean, all that very important electronic equipment. And their cords, since the plug in is located in the recessed area. The fireplace is on the North wall. TV in the East wall. We have a couch on the South side, centered and facing the fireplace. A loveseat and recliner on the West wall, facing the tv. The recliner is kind-of diagonal. We have an open floorplan, and the kitchen is on the Southwest side. From there, I can watch the fireplace AND the tv, which is kind of nice. I don't have it yet, but there will be a large coffee table in front of the couch.

If you have or can get plans for the house or just tell from the room behind the fireplace what is behind the brick beside the fireplace, that could help you decide. Sometimes duct work and/or plumbing and wiring is hidden in a wall and that otherwise unusable space might be what the brick covers up ... and the reason the built in shelves are not wider. You could actually just cover as much of the brick as you want with wood paneling or dry wall if tearing out the brick is not practical ... or if you just want to leave the brick in place in case a future buyer prefers the brick being visible, potentially increasing resale value with the right buyer.

part II, Just trying to bring in some elements to warm up all that gray. for the lights, don't know if you like gold, black, glam, farmhouse or more modern Georgia and Lulu rug (they have lots of colors. or try CostPlus World market. cheaper) Against the wall I gave you a walnut console, but you could also do something like this in a white, gray or black If you prefer the TV over on the wall, it would look similar to this^ But you'd have to do a longer type of unit. I really like this one. this is too yellow for your gray theme, so it would need to be a diff color. or, try a console like this, no tv (do art or a mirror) bring in plants and other elements like this pic Those current counter stools you have are too dark and the wrong style. I gave you two in the first pic I photoshopped of your kitchen area. I like the woven loom type of chair, or, the backless one I stuck in the picture are like mine, shown here. I have the similar white/gray and marble, but I brought in the warmer wood elements and color w/my art. I have the black leather sofa and bench, lighter rug, leather pouf, etc. If you like the black accents, you could do your fireplace wall in black, or charcoal, or any other color. You could also position the furniture shown here, along w/the rug^ Or, what about this one? has a more modern light, open shelving next to window, and a thicker, dark shiplap over the fireplace. cooler tones that are similar to your house. notice the light. the chair and wood tables. if you kept your sofa facing the fireplace, you could do side table, sofa table like shown, and a few chairs.

Thanks guys -- I'm surprised that everyone likes the 10' ceiling over the cathedral ceiling. Sounds like I need to really consider that.

Is it possible to go to a 12 foot ceiling? Had that in my last house in the LR, DR, and kitchen. I loved it!

We have a vaulted ceiling and it's a pain to decorate. I'm at a stand-still right now. So I would definitely do the 10' if I had a choice right now!

I think option #2 looks better.

And I would choose 10 foot ceilings.

We went with 9' flat ceilings and like them much better than our previous home which was vaulted. I only wish that we would have went ahead with 10'flat rather than just 9.

My eye is drawn to option #1 because it is so different from the standard, and very pretty room.

I'd stick with 10 ft. ceilings for more efficient heating and I also think it goes better with the traditional atmosphere that you present in your mock-ups.

I like option 2 MUCH better, although I can't decide which ceiling I like better. Leaning towards the 10". Option 1 really detracts form that gorgeous fireplace being the focal point-- and Option two fells bigger, more open, and more classic all at the same time. I love it!

Option #2 with the cathedral ceiling definately. #1 feels very busy and asymmetrical.

#2 with 10 ft. ceilings depending on how the sun comes in the french doors so you don't get glare on the TV. If the glare would be bad you could still do #2 with the TV on one side of the fireplace with pocket doors to close it off when not viewing.

Looks like it will be gorgeous.

I'm in the minority here, as I MUCH prefer the cathedral ceiling. I had one in my last home and LOVED it....also painted the room myself with no problems. Just because it is cathedral, doesn't mean it has to be that high. Mine were, I think, 10-12' in center, 8' at edge. It most definitely makes the fireplace the focus.

As for your TV... have you considered placing it within the shelving in option 2, but on a wall-mount, hinged bracket that will allow for you to pull it out and angle it for viewing as necessary? I believe that if you did this, once your shelves are fully accessorized, it won't call too much attention away from the fireplace when not in use.

I believe they call it an "articulating wall mount" and I think there is a poster here on GW that has one in cabinetry like I'm suggesting, but I do not recall who it is.

I like #1 mainly because no one sitting on the couch in #2 is going to end a tv-watching evening without getting stiff neck.
Concealing the TV with a pullout pocket door in #1 would be a good idea. Space it out right and with the door pulls out and closes it could hold a framed piece of art atop it.

Be sure the consider the heating/ac costs associated with high ceilings, regardless of the type.
