Raised hearth or floor level for LR fireplace?
Comments (13)I like both, but I think a floor level fireplace in your living room, would be a little more formal, while a raised fireplace in your family room/kitchen area would be more informal. I know you want to use the stone in the kitchen. What do you plan to use in the living room? Are you going with something more classic/traditional, like Monablair's second fireplace? IMHO, this would give each room a different feel and a little different purpose. I know you have a TV in the kitchen now, so a more informal, kick back and watch TV or help with dinner would be a nice balance, to a more formal, sit down and relax, have a nice conversation or maybe watch a little TV in the living room. Also, a nice white classic mantle (with maybe a marble surround?) would be so perfect, with your beautiful butler's pantry. More classic/formal in the front rooms, and more informal, casual cottage, in the back :)...See MoreMouting TV low on fireplace - scale with cathedral ceiling
Comments (67)Great thread. I resisted the tv over the fireplace for years. When we built I had a space next to the fireplace in a cabinet set up for the tv. We put a regular 36" tube tv in there. It was fine. Then a few years later we bought a 48" flat screen. It wouldn't fit in the cabinet so we created a media room downstairs. I added a small kitchenette and set it up for up to 6 people to watch tv. The too had the added bonus of not having the glare of the upstairs. Guess what, no one ever went down there unless we made a production of it. So finally we bought a 55" flat screen and mounted it over the fireplace. I love the fact that it is right there where everyone is and tends to hang out. When we have gatherings I put pandora on and that is good, too. My mother in law was an interior designer and I thought she'd have a kitten when she saw it but she agreed it worked for our lifestyle. In our next house we will have much less space so are planning for the tv over the fireplace again. Admitting that I am powerless over my need to binge watch Netflix made my life much easier :D. The builder we are working with has done some nice things to address this, in the really high ceiling rooms he did a double mantle. I'll see if I saved a pic and post it....See MoreFireplace wall TV placement
Comments (17)That's great, thank you! I don't have an outlet appropriately located for a lamp there but I like the idea of something tall, I will look for something to serve that role. Any comments/ suggestions on furniture placement, rugs, coffee table etc. We have just moved from a MUCH smaller space and arranging furniture here seems like it should be easy but it does't feel that way! as far as furniture goes, coffee table will be the first to go. This old ikea beast has served us well but time for it to become a basement dweller....See MoreTray or Just Raise the Ceiling
Comments (35)I'm assuming you must have a lot of space in the attic already if you are considering vaulted? I *love* a vaulted ceiling and have 3 in our current home build. 2 serve a purpose, other 1 is for looks. Being in Texas, interesting ceilings are common. Does it cost more? YES. I'm also that one that will always be for old rustic looking beams, structural or not. We are using beams in our vaulted living room that were taken from old barns. In our master bedroom, we are doing a tray ceiling with the same old beams but will run them horizontally or in tic-tac-toe. Will some here scream "fake". Sure. Do I care? Nope. Not even a tiny bit. In Texas, it would help sell a home even (not that I care about selling, not planning on moving again until health says otherwise). That's the thing with the online world. You have people from all over the world who are raised around certain environments and will all have their own set of opinions. You have to decide what YOU want. When it comes down to it, online opinions do not matter because they will not be the ones living in your home. You can always learn from their thoughts (they are right that it will cost more to build & possibly heat/cool, depending on your climate), but you have to make the decision in the end. You're the one that will be living with it. What do you love? &, what can you afford?...See Moresky1122
