How to protect furniture tops?

While growing up my mother always had "dresser scarves" on our furniture to protect it from scratching. What is used now to keep lamps or other items from scratching wood surfaces?

If the item doesn't have a good underside, I cut a piece of felt slightly smaller than the size of the base (I keep 1 yard on hand) and lay it underneath. Or I use coasters.

I have discovered round felt circles (precut) with adhesive backing. They come in all sizes. I placed them around the undersides of vases, decorative plates, lamp bottoms, everything.

Use only the manufacturer's recommend products on your leather sofa, unless you are prepared to have a damaged hide on you new piece. When incompatible chemicals are used on furniture grade leather, it typically causes a stripping of the topcoat and the hide is ruined. What's worse, this stripping does not show up right away and occurs several months after application of the product. By that time the leather is ruined. I would check with the maker of the sofa before I would use any product on the piece.

So I'm back where I started, with poly. That's what I'm going to do. But first I'll remove the old shellac with denatured alcohol then apply a thin coat of new shellac. A light sanding, then a few coats of poly. I'm guessing some of you will recommend against this. I've read in some places that poly won't adhere well to shellac, but I've read in enough other places that it works just fine. I love the look of the shellac so I'm willing to risk it. I just don't think I'll get that same look with poly alone. The problem with the glass idea is that I change the size of the table somewhat frequently. I have 12 leaves, so it can go from a small table for four to enough room to seat 14 adults comfortably. I really like being able to just pop in a couple of extra leaves if friends or family come for a meal, or take them all out if we need floor space. I can't thank you all enough for your help and advice. I've learned so much in this whole process! I'll post pictures when it's done. :)

Could you attach some light colored (so it doesn't have a color that can transfer in case it gets wet) felt to the bottom of your wood tray? It would slide easily and I can't imagine that felt would leave anything behind?

Is anyone familiar with or used a Guardsman furniture protection plan?

Guardsman is misleading consumers grossly and with no shame. Their fine print exclusions dis-qualify all damages they claim to cover in their marketing brochure. Guardsman plan was sold to me along with my purchase of outdoor furniture from Chair King. The nice brochure said it covered rips/cuts/burns. When I made a claim about a rip from the dog, they denied it under their "misuse - animal damage" section. In fact, every possible cause of any cut/tear/burn is excluded from their coverage. The brochure also says that they cover burns and heat marks, but then the exclusions say that they do not cover such burns/heat marks that are caused by fire. What else these can be caused by? Their exclusions are very broad and basically dis-qualifies all damages they claim to cover on their brochure.

I use glass on some of my pieces to keep the cats from scratching, but for individual pieces I also use the felt pieces. I use to love the scarves and love ironing for my mom and great aunt. Can't use them now because the cats think they are great for sleeping on and the scarves just don't look good full of cat hair!! Damn cats, ruining my life. HA! HA!

Thank you! I needed this post since I have been putting folded paper towels underneath anything I put on top of my new bureaus and have been wondering what I could do without getting glass tops made since I would prefer to not have glass tops.

On my end table in the master bedroom, I keep a piece of 8x10 cardboard for my water bottle, my hand and foot, cream, my pills in a little cup when I retire to watch TV. (ha I am old). It is not pretty, but no one really sees it in our bedroom but us.
