What a fun list! I'm looking forward to seeing what other people think of as "classic".

1. White ceilings and trim.
2. Heavy, real silver silverware
3. Leather and burgundy (both the wine and the color) in a den
4. Bloody Marys at a holiday brunch
5. Copper saucepans
6. Matching sofa and loveseat set in a living room
7. Guest towels and soaps in the bathroom that everyone avoids using because they are so nice, drying their hands on toilet paper instead or (worse) skipping the handwashing altogether. But you have to admit, that is classic! :-)

Benjamin Moore Regal Select is now labeled paint & primer in one. The other Benjamin Moore Regal is called Regal Classic. The difference between the two is that Regal Select is now NO VOC even after tinting using Benjamin Moores Gennex Zero VOC colorant system. Eventually Benjamin Moore will be discontinuing its older products that uses the universal colorant such as Regal Classic, Super Spec, Super Hide and so on. As these products are converted to the newer Gennex Platform. Super Spec replacement is Ultra Spec, Super Hide replacement is Super Hide Zero, Regal Classic replacement is Regal Select. Super Hide Zero is not recommended and should not be sold for residential painting but for places that get painted often such as apartments or schools for example. Also since Benjamin Moore owns Corotech Coatings they will be discontinuing most of there industrial products or relabeling some of them with the Corotech label. Corotech is a blend of there best products from Benjamin Moore, Coronado, and Insl-x. Benjamin Moore interior wood refinishing is moving to there Lenmar product label. Coronado is a lower price point which in the Tough Walls line it is a quality between Benjamin Moore Super Spec and Regal Classic lines. Coronado Super Kote 5000 is a quality between Super Hide and Super Spec lines. Its not always about the solids in these paints there are other factors such as the resin and grade of ingredients. I recommend looking at the tds (technical product data sheets) for more information. Benjamin Moores architetural coatings (Aura, Natura, Regal Select, Ultra Spec, ben, Super Hide Zero) are moving to all be Zero VOC (Volatile Organic Compounds) which is why products such as Super Spec and Regal Classic will be discontinued. If you look at the back of the cans on the bottom they do say manufactured by Benjamin Moore & Co. Montvale, NJ. For more information of products look at the product data sheets www.benjaminmoore.com , www.coronadopaint.com , www.lenmar-coatings.com , www.insl-x.com , www.maxumstains.com , and www.corotechcoatings.com . All of these products are manufactured by Benjamin Moore. Regal is out of your price range I would use Coronado Tough walls. Coronado Tough Walls is a scrubbable, high hiding, low odor, and spatter resistant paint. Also make sure you are using the correct roller cover and brush, it does make a big difference. Good morning, all. Fascinating topic. Of the four Chinese classical novels, I've read two: Journey to the West (aka Monkey) and The Water Margin (aka Outlaws of the Marsh, All Men are Brothers). Still need to read Romance of the Three Kingdoms and The Story of the Stone. I can heartily recommend Journey to the West, trans. Anthony Wu, 4 v. from Univ. Chicago Press. The hero, Monkey, shows up in a lot of modern novels by Chinese and Chinese American writers (e.g. Tripmaster Monkey, His Fakebook by Maxine Hong Kingston). Water Margin is a lot like the Icelandic sagas, netla. "Then they went here and killed a lot of people, then they went over there and killed a few more, then the other people came back and killed a few of them..." usw. Well, not quite that bad, but with very sparse prose and characterization determined only by what people do, not what they say or what the author thinks about them. colleenoz: All fourteen (?) of the Baum Oz books were published in paperback by Ballantine about twenty or twenty-five years ago; you might be able to get used copies from abebooks or some other 2nd-hand vendor. I don't know if the later ones by Ruth Plumley Thompson are available in recent editions or not...while they're a lot of fun (I still have vivid memories of Captain Salt in Oz from my childhood), I've never tried to find them.

I like how Prince Charles described his "fashion icon" status re Esquire magazine. He said, "Charles himself acknowledged his accidental status as a fashion icon at the launch party of London Collections: Men fashion week at St James's Palace in 2012. "I have lurched from being the best-dressed man to being the worst-dressed man," he said. "Meanwhile, I have gone on — like a stopped clock — and my time comes around every 25 years." I rather think I like that approach. My own fashion style is that, as is my house. The key is to never be "dated" by one's style - to choose what is right and stick to it. No avocado green appliances, no micro mosaic backsplash, no grey-everything, no Tuscan bathrooms or kitchens. If one sticks with basic good taste that is appropriate to the house and to oneself, it's always going to look nice, even if not trendy. But who the heck wants trendy? I certainly do not! As for my gray kitchen: well, that trend has not yet hit Louisville so I may be in luck! I didn't have my kitchen painted gray because it was a trendy, not look; I did it as it goes with the adjoining (not open) rooms and white did not, and I prefer a painted kitchen. But if what Mark Twain said about Kentucky is true "I want to be in Kentucky when the end of the world comes, because they are always 20 years behind.", I think I'm in luck as I certainly won't be around by the time it actually becomes a trend here!

I have lived in my new house for 15 months and I love the look of my floors - they are easy to decorate with and give the home a warm but "cool" look at the same time. However, I think the maintenance is much harder than what I previously had - natural red oak with a higher sheen. My new white oak floors have 1 coat of Bona Natural Seal and 2 coats of Bona Traffic HD satin. I adore the light color, but every little water spot shows, or a splash of spilled coffee. They are very unforgiving and I can't imagine these floors in a house with kids and a dog. And I do find myself wishing I had done 3 coats of Bona Traffic HD - just to give them more protection.

Jejvtr, hope you are doing okay, and that mom and DD are okay as well. Both of those things sound serious, and of course double the stress for you when they hit at one time.

I agree with most of your list, but almost couldn't read past the first item - oatmeal is ewwwww. LOL Not oatmeal cookies, oatmeal bread, oatmeal topping on a baked dessert. It is a texture thing with me.

I have to say I love this thread - the visuals conjured up are all wonderful and speak to some comfortable, safe place in my mind. Makes me wonder about the age bracket of respondents - are we within a predictable range? I agree with each and every thing mentioned so far.

I doubt this thread or our choices have anything to do with our ages. These are things that are timeless.

My family had none of these things other than the tick tock wall clock at my great aunts, the oil portrait of my grandmother as a little girl, and my mom's silver tea service that was stolen by burglars when I was in 8th grade.

I'm newly 42 though.

Hmmmm, I think I'm going to try for a different set of classics here... I agree with many of those already listed, but there is a heavy bias in them to fussy victoriana and expensive things, and classic isn't necessarily all about that all the time and unless one considers the cheaper classics too, one will miss the essence of what it is to be classic.

I think it was Traditional Magazine, maybe not, but I believe who said years ago, every classic home should have a grandfather clock, two wing chairs, a set of China for serving family or the queen, a set of crystal from which to drink milk or wine, brass chandelier/a nice brass lamp, candelsticks, a nice meat platter, a good white sheets, a great tablecloth such as white linen or similar to Army-Navy and books-a-plenty, vases for fresh flowers.

-Decent tea brewed (and kept HOT) in a teapot (I have a small collection of teapots with aluminum and felt-lined covers from the 40s and 50s)
-Real coffee made in an electric perculator (love that sound!)
-Old portraits on oil
-Comfortable seating
-Blinds (or sheers to hold back the glare but not the morning sun)
-Curtains to shut out the night (not a soft summer evening's view but those sneaky bitter windy ones)

I have enjoyed this thread. The images of beauty and comfort inspired me to pick out a list of 22 things that I plan to incorporate somewhere in my home. I think that will be very useful and keep me focused!

I would only add a couple of things:

Beautiful hallway chest with a large painting over it
flowers from the garden in a crystal vase
A chess set on a small table between 2 chairs
Gravy made from pan drippings and not a mix, and homemade rolls with lots of butter--from days when they didn't know better but were still thinner

Wonderful thread. Igloochic, I'm sorry you have to be in the hospital and hope you get to come home soon and enjoy some classic elements...
