What' on your counter?
Comments (42)This is an interesting discussion as this is core to my dilema with space planning for my kitchen reno. To be honest, What I would really like is to be able to do is to keep all the main appliances I use on the counter. I have tried the storage in shelves, on super susans, in cabinets in pantry and on the countertop already plugged-in(in a rental with a lot of counter space). The one that worked for me the best was having it on the counter.. I actually used the appliances a lot more and my meals were more creative. What I imagine is an extra-deep counter with an 1' deep appliance garage all along the back with a nice-looking tambour style door that can be rolled up or down - so essentially my kitchen can have a more open working view and a closed view that is clean and nice. I once timed how long it takes if I have to pull out the appliances and set it up - adds 10-15 mins to my prep and another 10-15 to put away. If wishes were horses :) Here is my appliance list (I cook a pretty international cuisine and use all of them on a regular basis) Bread machine - Weekly Coffee Machine - Daily Vitamix - Daily for kefir smoothies small spice grinder - 2-3 times a week for fresh spices as I use whole spices only Immersion blender - weekly Asian blender with multiple jars - 2-3 times a week stone molcajete (mortor/ pestle) - 2-3 times a week mini crockpot - weekly Rice cooker - 2-3 times a week Asian wet grinder - weekly Lalitha...See MoreWhat's the best counter top for food prep?
Comments (9)I agree about always using a cutting board for chopping, and as long as you have an area that is smooth and cool for working dough, whatever it is made of is just personal preference. However, I do have a question about cutting boards for the faithful users. Do you think there is any difference on the wear of your knives if you use a wooden board or a synthetic one? I have several of both, but my favorite wooden one (very old) split at a seam recently. I purchased good knives not long ago and would like them to last for many years. Do you think it matters which type someone uses, or is this also just a preference thing?...See MoreMultiple counter depths...would it look odd?
Comments (9)Thanks ccoombs1. I don't mind a bump out at the sink, in fact, I think it looks nice if it's 2 or 3 inches. Right now my bump out is 5.5" and my sink base is only 22" deep. It's one of the main things I want to change in the kitchen. The design I have now is to pull the counters out 3" on each leg (27" cabinets), then bump the sink out 2-3". I know I can make this work with a stainless apron front sink, but I had my heart set on a Franke with the cool intergral shelf and accessories. I could squeeze in the Oceania, but would have to have a wall mount faucet so no pull out spray. Problem is, I've made so many compomises already and the sink area is really, really important to me (it's the ONE thing I hate about my current kitchen). Does anyone have unequal counter depths in there kitchen? If I saw a picture, it might help....See Morequestions for the clear countertops club
Comments (23)I'm also a clear counters person. I didn't realize anybody wouldn't choose to be if they had enough storage. It's not at all because I'm a neat freak or want my kitchen to be a show piece. It's because if I'm cooking, I need my counter space for cooking. If there's a bunch of junk on it already, where do I cook? I find it really annoying to have to shift a bunch of junk in order to cook. Or if I don't move it all to the dining room table or whatever so I can cook and just cook around the junk, when I am cleaning up after, wiping oil/batter/flour off a whole bunch of random clutter is ten times more difficult (and often a futile exercise) than just wiping down an empty counter with a few swipes. I also find clutter visually stressful, but this is far more of a practical habit. I want counter space because I need it to work on. Not because I need counter-high storage. - ripening fruit In a colander that moves around. I don't have a solution for this one in my kitchen. I move it to the kitchen table when I am about to start a big cooking project, and otherwise, it moves around the kitchen counters. We eat a LOT of fruit. - bread Pantry and/or freezer. - open bottle of wine Fridge or pantry. - kitchen towel* Hangs on the oven handle. - dish rag We don't use these; we use sponges that I keep in a little suction up basket thing on the inside wall of the sink. But my mom has her dish rags hanging to dry on the faucet or on a little towel bar she screwed into the side of a cabinet (actually a wide door pull, but it's like a mini towel bar). - paper towels* These are on a paper towel holder that is screwed to the bottom of an upper cabinet. - kitchen scissors Drawer with other kitchen tools -- tongs, ladle, etc. - toaster oven Don't have one. I don't toast things often enough for it to make sense to have one -- I just toast things in a pan or in the oven if I really need to. - salt and pepper On a shelf by the stove....See MoreBoopadaboo
