questions for the clear countertops club

I'm thinking to try to keep the counters in my new-to-me kitchen clear, or at least to make sure that everything has a home that isn't parked on the counter. (With the exception of my electric tea kettle, without which my counters - and life - would be devoid of meaning and virtue.)

I'm still having trouble figuring out where some items can go that's not on the counter, though. If you keep your countertops clear, where do you put your:

- ripening fruit

- bread

- open bottle of wine

- kitchen towel*

- dish rag

- paper towels*

- kitchen scissors

- toaster oven

- salt and pepper

* I know there have been threads on these, and I've read some of them, but I haven't had an 'aha' moment yet, I think because I'm working with an existing kitchen.
