Blinds: matching the floor vs. the trim

Hi all,

My home has white trim around the windows, door frame, baseboards and so forth. However, we've just had brazilian cherry hardwood floors installed and our furniture pieces are all fairly dark woods, as well.

We'd like to get blinds that match the floor, as opposed to the white frames. But will this look weird? I can't tell if I'm going to be making a decorating faux pas that I'm sure to regret. Does anyone have any advice?

Lol bob. That would never work with me.

I have a couple of rooms with white trim and wood doors and I think the light frame around the dark wood looks terrible myself. I'd much rather see you incorporate the blinds into the window (white)color so they aren't a huge blob of dark surrounded by a light frame. Bring your floor in with rich drapery...it's a much cleaner look.

It sounds like you are planning an inside mount but think that having a white border around the blind will be a problem. Why not do an outside mount instead? Are you doing panels as well? If so then an inside mount wouldn't be an issue sinse the curtains would cover.

Oh yes, inside mount, dark to match floors and white trim. I see it all the time and it looks fabulous. Go for it.

They are only three months old so look new. Absolutely no problems and the quality is very good. They operate very smoothly. I did custom order through Penney's. I first did my internet research and had several quotes online. The sales rep was able to beat all my quotes. It was nice to able to see the various blinds in person, then I brought home the sample books to match color. That proved difficult with the tiny samples but I wanted neutral and am happy with the results. You have the choice of separate head rails like I did, or a single head rail. They are easy to clean though I have not needed to yet. I haven't decided if I will put my drapes back up as I'm enjoying the clean look right now. Mine are 3/8" double cell, 40"x72". Each blind was $268 +tax. The top-down/bottom-up function does increase the price but I feel it was worth it for my application. Here is a link that might be useful: Cleaning Instructions

2 years ago I put beautiful roller shades in my large family room window after a huge remodel. They are beautiful, but I miss the ability to control light, and the "all up or down" situation. We also need to control our light due to hardwood floors, so we have kept them mostly open. Now our backyard neighbors have put in a two-story addition. I wish I had stayed with blinds, faux wood or wood. I am curios how faux wood ceh4010 used in Las Vegas are holding up to the heat and sunlight. We live in a similar climate.

I wouldn't worry about it. I would have chosen blinds to match the trim but it is what it is; it's just a blended color scheme off-whites. NBD. Once you get everything in place, it will look fine.

If the bullnoses are available, then use them. It makes for a more cohesive look without adding another element. You may save a bit going with the metal trim, but that will go out the window when you'll need the metal edge corners; and if those are not available how well will the installer make those mitre corners?

Love the look of dark blinds but keep in mind you will see the dust so much more, and I find blinds very hard to clean.

I think the inside mount, dark blinds to match the floor looks great. See it all the time, BUT, like rosebbey said, the dust will be an issue :o It just doesn't show up on white. It's there mind you, it just doesn't show.

I had forgotten about the dust issue when replying to the other thread about this subject last week (see link.) We do get awful dust, but thankfully, I have someone else to clean them. :)

I'll be the dissenter. We have Brazilian cherry floors throughout and mahogany and/or cherrywood furniture. All of the trim, mouldings, and baseboards are white. Our blinds and shutters are all inside mount whites; I just don't see dark ones in this setting. Just my .02!

Independence Hall in Philadelphia has stained venetian blinds and painted paneling in the Supreme Court chambers. If it was good enough for the founding fathers at the end of the 18th c. its good enough for me. Either option is a good choice.

We chose dark blinds because the exterior trim is dark brown. The interior trim is all white, and I think the contrast is pretty cool. Here's a pic of the living room:

Dust your blinds and then wipe them with a dryer sheet. That will reduce the amount of dust setteling on your blinds.

Wood blinds are a pain to keep clean. I have a easy way to clean them though. Hold out until my wife can't stand it and she cleans them. I find this the easiest way. But if after dusting you wipe them with a fabric softner dryer sheet, it will reduce the amount of dust settling on them.
