First, what is going over the fireplace and shouldn't you have that up before you try to do the less important walls?

Other than that issue, I like the idea of the proposed piece. It's very consistent with the look of your room. What is it made out of?

How the proposed piece works in that particular spot, I think will depend on the colors you choose and how you organize those colors. It looks like it could be either very busy or subtle, depending on how you order it. Which look do you want for that particular spot?

It's really cool to think you could order something to your own specs. I might be inclined to order that item last, after I have obtained all of the less flexible pieces.

I have been following the evolution of your beautiful room for as long as you've been posting pictures! And speaking honestly, I don't care for that art at all. First, it would possibly trigger a real migraine for me (busy geometrics can do that). Second, it looks a lot like the strips of glass mosaics which are so popular for backsplashes and in bathrooms now, and those, IMO, are not timeless.

Looks like it belongs in an office building lobby. Sorry:(
As for the above the fireplace, I don't know if I would want to put holes in the stonework. Maybe larger pieces of art and the stone itself is art!
I like your floral print. Maybe find a series of nature prints.

I think you should be looking for a series of prints or something sculptural that isn't just another big 'wall' of canvas or strips of wood. You have a lot of big, plain things in the room - I think you could do with some texture and interesting that would come from a grouping of things.
There is no law that says you can only hang one piece of art to fill one space.

That piece is visually really heavy. You'd have to be really careful with color and size to make sure that it wouldn't overwhelm the room. On the other hand, the rest of your room is GORGEOUS so I'm pretty sure that you have the ability to make it work.

Very nice room with beautiful built-ins. I honestly don't care for that piece of art however. At a glance it reminds me of a side view of a stack of magazines. In another, it looks like a sample display of frames in a frame/art store. They leave me cold, as if they belong in a lobby of an office building. If you'd like to try again with a framed print or stretched canvas, I've had great luck with Art.com -great selection and if you're not 100% satisfied with it, they take it back.

Always, always, the most important criterion is if a piece of art speaks to YOU. If it moves you, makes you feel happy, provokes some kind of reaction (hopefully a good one, of course!), then it's the right piece for your home.

The piece(s) you've pictured are interesting and the texture does speak to your gorgeous fpl. My concern or rather my thought is that the colors should be as muted, as subtle as the stone surrounding your fpl.

But again, art is so subjective (thankfully!). Ultimately what will be the best piece(s) will be those which you *know* you have to have, which you want to see every single day.

I love your room and have also been tracking your progress. I am hoping your blank wall solutions will help me decide what to do with mine. Judging from this post and your previous post, I'm wondering....are you searching for some thing that is a little more contemporary and unconventional ? Houzz has some nice idea books that are good sources of inspiration for decorating with non traditional art pieces.

As for your current selection, I kind of like it but I am not a great judge. My tastes in art are pretty eclectic and not at all main stream . My DH shakes his head every time I bring home new "art".

as for my fireplace, i don't intend on putting anything else there other than the candlesticks & floral branches. the stones are so beautiful to me that i don't want to cover them. and yes, the print that i already have on the other wall in there is my fave. if there was a complementary one for it, i'd have put both on the big wall.

i recently added a tall plant to delineate the space between the desk wall & the living room wall (right by the thermostat), so it's done a nice job of adding a little warmth & color. but i still need to take care of that negative space.

The thing your beautiful room lacks to me is a spot to curl up and read. I see no lighting but for overhead bullets.
How about a lamp? Either an archetctural bow-arm?
I like the idea of a tall plant...I can see a lovely dracena marginata or maybe a sanseveria in a tall black pot.
But, don't go just for "something" on that wall....just to hang something.....wait until something calls your name....meanwhile consider it an excuse to visit gallerys and shows!

As someone who absolutely loves your room, I say no. As an artist, I say no way!!! You can stretch a pretty piece of fabric if you're just looking for a pattern.
For that big wall, next to the tv viewing chairs, how about some vintage movie posters?

I like the second one down and would like to more about it. How big is it and what is it made of? I like the colors, texture etc.

I think it would look great on the wall on the right hand side of the fireplace - the wall that is empty by the chair and then has the desk further down. I am a texture/color person - more of a go big / bold or go home type and am not particularly fond of little kitchy things or seeing one more grouping of soon to be outdated family photos (we all had cute kids and attractive parents) or a matched set of co-ordinating prints....I like the piece. You already have little boxes in the fireplace wall - no need to repeat, bigger and bolder works for me in there.

The colors, to me, somewhat echo the colors in the floral print and bring a bit of subtle green into the room......I like it. I envision it as rather large. Small scale would be a no go.

What is outside your windows - green? trees? open sky?

Your room is so, so gorgeous...love the fireplace and those built-ins!! Just beautiful.

On the art, while I think it's intersting, I don't love it for your room. Find it a little too cold/industrial, but again that's my feeling...Art is so subjective.

That is a large wall to fill...
I could see several fairly large scale pieces or a gallery wall. If I did a gallery wall, I would keep the frames the same and images consistent. If I can find any inspiration pics, I'll forward.

I think that if you love it, it could work! I can see how that wall is challenging to decorate. If you have a little feeling of doubt about it, and are not listening to that because you just want to get it done, that will only get worse. (speaking from my own experience).

Would you consider printing some of your favorite family photos in black and white and using a framing system like I've linked below?

I am glad I am not the only one who does not like that art for your room. It has the wrong vibe, by a lot....

srg, my opinion is already outweighed, but I love that textured wall piece. It speaks to my heart. Just had to let you know that someone else was touched by the texture and color contrasts in that art.

I think many here did not like it for her room but did not dislike it overall. I think it would work somewhere else, but not with the more mellow look already going on....

I didn't know the FP was stone, I thought it was wallpaper. It may look nice in person without anything hanging there, but in the photo, it looks unfinished.

Funny someone mentioned that art looks like the backsplash tiles. That is exactly what I thought.

While most think it is the wrong "vibe" for your room, I feel it is consistent with the rest of the room, at least as you have it so far.

Certainly other types of art, like that other beautiful piece you have, would be much prettier to me, but that is me. I guess the question is, now that you are down to the finishing touches, do you want a colder or warmer look?

I rather like the artwork (love the second one made of chair rail molding -- beautiful colors and interesting texture). Probably better looking IRL; the subtleties show better. Those are strong pieces, though, so maybe a more subtle colored version would be better. But I could definitely see using smaller versions somewhere in the room.

That stone above your fireplace is fabulous. I don't think it looks unfinished; it's a wonderful touch of natural beauty.

First of all, kudos on not covering that lovely fireplace stone.

I think I like the artwork, but it is something I would need to see in person. You are going to need a really large piece of art to fill that wall. I like the modern look it has. But then, I like office and hotel decorations, maybe because they tend to have clean, sharp lines.

I will add to the chorus and say that I'm not a fan of any of the choices. The room is beautiful but I think you need something with some color on the walls -- everything in the room is muted and monochromatic (greys, browns, beiges and similar tones) and my eye is searching for some color to focus on. None of those pieces have much visual interest to me. To me, they all look like corporate art. I see that you've put a few red vases on the shelves - maybe pick up some of those colors with bold colors -- red, yellow or purple piece - I'm seeing some abstract art with a white background? It's a big wall so perhaps break it up with some shelves over the desk? You could put some small baskets or storage containers on the shelves for function.

I also like not putting any artwork over the mantle - the stone is lovely and if you put art there I think it would compete with the TV next to it.

This is just my amateur decorator opinion but I think your room is crying out for more color, or at least more texture and curves, not more straight lines. Your windows, furniture, area rug, wall unit, TV, fireplace, and stone wall are all rectangular, monochromatic, and/or hard textures and you only have a few small round and colored accessories to contrast.

I love the print you have but repeating something similar isn't going to inspire. You might look for a textured or mixed media art piece. I am reminded of "Pal's thread about the ugly cabinet." There must be some art available that has bold texture that is a bit 'prettier' tho! :-) You might even make your own textured piece using large scale anaglypta wallpaper painted and antiqued or several ceiling medallions hung in an arrangement. Whatever you do it needs to be large. Several framed photographs would work but they must be large and the content have curved lines.

If you love monochromatic you don't need to add much more color but curves are needed to soften and warm the room.

Leaving the area above the mantel unembellished to feature the beautiful stone is perfect.

srg, I really think you could prop some kind of mirror over the fireplace. I agree about the beauty of the stone, but to me, it just looks like a blank spot there. Propping the mirror would allow you to avoid nailing anything into the stones.

I agree with all the opinions on the glass art. Don't like. I think your room has a very modern vibe with the gray colors and the stones. I like how the modern floral you have kind of softens it. I would search etsy for abstract florals.

I think the fireplace is being lost in these pix because of the lighting. There are can lights focused down on the cabinetry on either side, for no good reason as there is nothing that is really being featured. But then the lovely stone fireplace sits in darkness, the one place on that wall that NEEDS to have the lighting washing down the wall.

I have no problem with nothing above the fireplace but the stone, but I do have a real issue with the lighting in that area, and really in the whole space. The space needs some warm lighting at eye level to make the seating spaces seem friendly and welcoming. An uplight by the tall plant that has been added will also warm the space by bringing some light lower in the room.

It is an amazing space, and will be even better with some lighting and art that will soften and warm up the room.

Going to echo a few people here:
There's a lot of square and rectangular lines in the space. I think you should focus on curves and organic shapes for your art work. I think your artwork on the other wall is fabulous and I would try and bring in more like that. I think a large round coffee table would go a long way also.

Agree abut the lighting: Add lamps and a downlight for the fireplace.
The room, while lovely in it's monochromatic palette could be enlivened if not by color, then by texture.

I think it is very hard to determine what speaks to you when it comes to art, but I am not loving the pieces you have picked for the side of the thermostat. I agree with the others that they seem to be rather predictable.

I keep on going back to the orange pillow which I love. I really would like to see that color represented on that long wall in some way. I am also envisioning some piece of "furniture/something?" on that long wall between the chair and bookcase - as others have suggested. To me the room seems as if there is too much going on in the other three areas especially with those beautiful windows, and this long wall is very lacking. I don't think the desk is really adding much interest. Keep looking.

Les, don't mean to hijack here, but I am curious if you are on the east coast like me (CT). It is so peaceful and I have the luxury of sleeping as late as I like. I have always loved seeing the sunrise - not from getting up early, but from still being up from the night before. Like you I try to break the habit, but it is too tempting to read till daybreak.

I am in the western 'burbs of Chicago. Unfortunately, I don't get to sleep in late, tho I certainly push that as close as I can during the work week. I do get to sleep in on the weekends many times, but during the week I have to be up no later than 7:30, which means going to bed at 3:30 AM is not doing me a lot of good! LOL

The ugly, beautiful, compelling cabinet went for $22,320, slightly under estimate. The highest priced lot was a sofa made out of nickels that reached $99,000.

As for that wall, I see about a dozen identically framed prints floor to ceiling.

I immediately saw something more architectural on that wall - like a set of salvaged doors in a whitewash/distressed. Large & statement without color.

Every time I see photos of your room I just love it. It seems like you and your family use it for watching TV and just relaxing so I would like to see maybe moving that mirror and replacing that with a large plant in that corner, hanging the mirror sideways on the wall surrounded with a gallery of family photos. Some can be enlarged quite big and stretched on canvas frames and others just framed in brown or black frames.

I agree that you just need a pop of color above the fireplace. It looks very barren without something there. I'd first find that art and then move to the sides of the room. These are what I see in your room after noticing the orange pillow:
