Bernhardt , Ralph Lauren from China

Spotted a nice looking leather chair from

Bernhardt today at Homegoods. On closer look could see it wasn't leather. Small tag only mentioned polyester. Yes, it was made in China. Also spotted a nice looking Ralph Lauren table. Actually "Lauren by RLH", which I guess is, as with his clothes, the cheaper line. I didn't climb under to see if it was marked 'made in China', but from the price I'd imagine so. I'm pretty much off buying from China in general ( when it is avoidable, fer cryin' out loud!), but here's my question. Are the cheap knockoffs of today worse than those of 10 or so years ago? I see plaster-like-white under the scratched "wood' surface of furniture at at Homegoods and TJ Maxx, etc. A ten year old table from Bombay Co. seems to be of much better quality. Also, Bernhardt was once pretty good, I thought. Is it ALL from overseas now...Drexal-Heritage, Henerdon and the like? Poor N.C. Poor us. Any thoughts?
