And here is our other bathroom. This is the hall bath/kids bath. This bathroom won't get a gut job...ever, but there ARE a few things I would like to do before I call it "done". The tile (floor and shower surround) and vanity are in good shape, but I would love to maybe reface with cabinet doors and get new counters. I was thinking about trying out a marble-looking laminate. I would also like a new mirror. I thought this one was an improvement over the old one, but I don't think I'll be satisfied until I have the one I really want, which is the large Kensington pivot mirror from PB (or something similar). And maybe some additional overhead lighting - like a fan/light combo once the current fan kicks the bucket. But for now, I think this is an improvement.

I painted the walls a light gray, painted the cabinet and added hardware, changed out the lighting, mirror, faucet, towel hooks and toilet, and added some art.

Also lovely! The grey walls make the white tile really pop. Before they got kinda lost. We got rid of our round lightbulbs and plastic knob faucet too, must have been "in" at the time.

We had a similar set up with just those round lights in the bathroom. We switched out the fan for a fan/light and it is amazing! I can see in the shower! We wired it all on one switch, which I think might work well if that's a kids bath. That way, if they want to see in the tub they will by default vent the steam :-). Ours is a timer switch, so you can't really forget anything.

Here is what it looks like now after painting it Palladian Blue (thanks, sueb20, for the correct spelling): This is a spare cabinet door I have that is a dark alder (which is quite similar to cherry): I do like this much better. This shade still has a tinge of red in it. I'm wondering if I should aim for this type of finish or something without the red undertones? Also, if I were to layer a brownish/black gel stain (like a walnut or java) would it work better to reduce the red/orange of the existing stain? Other possibility could be a mahogany, but since the existing stain has quite a bit of red/orange, perhaps that'd be too much? I'm not going to sand away the entire stain there now, just enough to get off the poly layer. The cultured granite doesn't photograph too well, but it has little greyish/black flecks in it. Usually I find a java stain too dark for my taste, but I'm curious how it would look next to the cultured granite. I don't think it works too well with the existing finish--it's too orange and shiny for me, as the same time, is it fairly good shape and I don't want to ruin it. Next task, though, is to clean the grout in the floor tile and reseal before DH and DS return so the bathroom can be used again.

bellashere - I missed your note yesterday. I'm so sorry. I'd take the shower door out completely but then I'd have the lip of about 6 inches of tile off the ground for someone to trip over. And on the off chance we need to actually shower there (like there is something wrong with the upstairs shower) I don't think a curtain would be enough to keep the water in. (Though I could be wrong.) As for painting, it's not that I don't know how, but I am not physically able. I'm having to hire someone to paint the other rooms as well so I'm trying to keep it on the low side. Last bid for painting all the rooms was $4K which is about $2K more than I want to spend. Good idea on using a regular curtain. I think I'll have a lot more options. Handyman took the handles off the door today and took off the ugly brass towel rack and the weird block of wood behind it. Dry wall guy is fixing all the holes. sheesharee - I liked the Olive Branch too. Love it in your room. I think my thing is that I have had a hankering for Baby Turtle ever since I first saw it, I think it was in Red's room. And since I'm using Flowering Herb in the nearby rooms and they are right next to each other, I think they will blend well. Baby Turtle can go brown or green and I'm happy with both. The color makes me think of my garden, which is always a good thing. :)

Most people I've met have a decorative accessories graveyard :-) I used to have a gift closet too but finally gave that up when I realized I was buying things that were TOO generic and not suitable for anybody. This is an interior bathroom that hasn't much to recommend it. We use this as the "medicine bathroom." All our OTC medicines are in that vanity----- cold relief in the top left drawer, first aid kit, bandaids and bandages and neosporin in another, ace bandages, arm and finger splints in another, upset tummy in another, etc. We don't keep any prescription stuff here but it is really convenient to keep all this type thing in one location. I'm thinking a brick floor would really take it up a notch or three, give it one great feature.

Multiple random thoughts: - I like the wood tone you have, and I agree that you should keep it AND the blinds ... they match. - With this wood tone, I'd throw out grey completely. They won't be friends. Greens, though, yes to greens! I'd go with green walls, green bathmats ... and I'd choose something brighter /more colorful than the word-art. I'd lean towards something sage-y green. - With green walls, you could keep the white tile and the white countertop. They appear to be in good condition. - What I don't like in this room: The light fixture. The room isn't large, and you have four bulbs ... which are amplified by the mirror. It's rather overwhelming -- it was literally the first thing to which my eye was drawn. - I'd lose those little lanterns. - The toilet area seems to be extra-wide, which isn't bad, but right now it looks kind of odd. I think the color /paint will help this area. - Do you have light in the toilet area? If not, I'd put in a simple one-bulb fixture over this area. - I'd put in some wall-to-wall shelves ... make them match the wood tone you already have --- this would be loads of storage, which you say you need ... I'd use baskets to hold ugly things such as extra toilet paper and feminine supplies. I also like the idea of artwork in this area. You have so much space here, and it needs filling. I would replace the pulls and knobs on the vanity with sleek, streamlined new ones in a tone to match the faucet. Is a new vanity top in the budget? I like the pulls! They have personality! How about spray painting them silver to match the faucet and light fixture? Painting would also make them stand out from the wood.

williamsem, yes that was the downside of replacing those rounds lights - they were BRIGHT and now I feel like it's a tad dark in there. The pics make it look even worse because I have zero photog skills! Anyway, I like the idea of a fan/light combo on a timer or at least all wired together...you bring up a good point about forgetful children. :-)

BTW - By your "madtown" screen name I'm guessing we have connections to the same city. :) Sadly, I moved away almost 2 years ago. Still miss it.

wifisker - I'm sure you're correct about the city :) You'll have to come back for a visit sometime, the city is always changing and it's fun to see. Plus, you know, CHEESE. Lol

I didn't catch the Mad-town reference until it was brought up, but my hubby is heading there in November for three days and I was debating on coming along. Would there be anything fun for me to do there while he's busy working?

justgotabme - YES! It will probably be a bit chilly, but no snow. The downtown area is great and very walkable. We have a very nice, new modern art museum and public library, as well as lots of shops and dining. Try to stay downtown if you can! Thank you madtown. I can handle chilly being I was born and raised in the Midwest. And snow....? While it's lovely to look at and I do know how to drive in it, I'm glad there won't be any.
Hubby will be at Epic in Verona, so I'm not sure where he plans on staying. I have an old friend that lives not far north of Madison, that I'd like to meet up with too.
It sounds like staying in the downtown area would be great, but we'll have to see what works out best so I can drop him off and have the car for the day. Thanks so much for the information. I'd love checking out the art museum.

Ah yes, Epic. Hmmm you might stay out there, then, but either way it's a short, easy drive into Madison. If you're interested in museums then I would suggest both the Chazen (has a brand new addition) and the MMoCA. Have fun!

Your old mirror and cabinets looks just like ours. Could you share your process with painting the cabinets? Did you sand, paint over existing, or have to strip them first? They look great!

Natesgram - The cabinets were already painted white and I just sanded them, did not strip. I used Benjamin Moore Advance paint. I think I did two or three coats. No primer. So far they are holding up fine, but it's only been a couple months. I am anticipating some kind of wear and tear where my son pushed his step stool up to the sink!
