Little Makeover for Hall Bathroom

I've ignored this bathroom for years! We had it painted it three or four years ago and the color turned out to be an unfortunate blue green I didn't like, but too many other projects took precedence over changing it. The bathroom is off a small vestibule that leads to a short, wide stair of five steps down to the hall from which our library opens. It doesn't get much use, but it's there and was looking terrible. So when Handy Guy came down for a couple of days this week to redo DS2's closet we did a quick makeover of the bathroom.

Painted the walls Sherwin Williams' Believable Buff, got 20 year old Ralph Lauren towels out of basement storage (along with a plaid cotton rug that was there stored for 10 years), moved burlap matted prints from the downstairs bathroom upstairs and into this one, as they look fab with the burlap shower curtain. We had painted the vanity a neutral olive gray when the walls were painted years ago, and it looks great with the new wall color!

I wish I had "before" pictures of the room, but just try to imagine a bathroom with no natural light, painted a strange blue green that fought with the vanity, the floor, and the shower curtain!

When we finished this I thought how wonderful it would look with brick floors! That may be the next project ;-)

I don't normally hang things so high on a wall with no furniture, but the ceiling in this room is 12' high, for some reason---

Yes I do! It's easy and saves money!

The bathroom is long and narrow, it really has no purpose except when we have parties it is nice to have two hall baths on this floor. I had the prints in our basement bathroom but moved them out to make way for a 64" trumeau mirror delivered yesterday. The prints and mirror together were too much for that bathroom, and the mirror won. Luckily the prints spent only a half day in the decorative accessories graveyard, lol :-)

Regarding the mirrors, I purchased some adhesive meant for mirrors (and marble etc) I unscrewed the clips at the top of the mirror and squirted adhesive all down the back, then pushed the mirror back against the wall and re-fastened the clips. I waited 2 days for it to cure, then carefully took off the clips and checked that the mirrors were secure. I used the same adhesive to stick the frame wood to the mirror. The wood was cut at Home Depot to my measurements - the top and bottom 1x4 is 1" longer than the width of the mirror so that it overlaps the edge by 1/2" each side to hide the glass edges. The side boards are the height of the mirror plus 1" then minus 7" for the width of the top and bottom boards (1x4's are actually 3.5" wide). First I glued the crown molding to the top board with carpenter's glue and taped it in place overnight to set. I wanted to make "returns" out of crown but even though I am good at math I was unable to cut those angles with my hand saw and miter box! Turns out you would only be able to see it on the toilet side of the guest bath anyway and it looks OK without. Then I used the mirror adhesive to stick the bottom board in place, taped it, then the side boards on top of that, taped them, then the top board with the crown. I left the blue tape overnight for the adhesive to cure it was solid by morning. I used primed pine boards and crown, so I didn't even have to paint the backs since I was using white - they were already white primer (you can see along the edge in the mirror).

To answer your ps: Sophie is Sophie Wheeler, a very long-time pro who was a prolific poster on this website since before it became Houzz. She was incredibly knowledgeable about everything design/construction, and tried her best to knock some sense into people. She was funny, smart, and just seemed to know everything about everything, so she was widely respected for her knowledge. She wasn't universally well-liked, however, due to her direct sharp nature. She was banned from the website, but I don't think it was over her direct bluntness....since there are several pros and others still here who are at least as direct, blunt, and sometimes offensive. A lot of people were offended by the way this website treated her, and some people left, never to return (apparently). I'm sad she left, and sadder to hear that she is in poor health. I believe you can do a search for her name, and read through some of her comments. It's a good way to learn a lot about building a house and remodeling, without making horrible mistakes.

LOL, YES, I am on overload for sure. I can see the finish line or maybe I am the horse that sees the barn! We have been remodeling since 2011. Yes, we have a heater,, vent, nightlight combo in all bathrooms. I am a big believer in them. We are changing the mirrors, cabinets, lights, and the tub will be changed to a shower. The marble floor will stay. The previous owners put that same marble in the kitchen. You can probably imagine what it looked like after 20 years on a kitchen floor. It was awful to remove, so we will keep the marble floor in the bathroom. We will probably go with white and/or and gray tile because of the black and white marble. We have already installed a white Toto toilet. The electrician asked what I am using for lights. I had no answer because I didn't know he was coming today until he texted last night. I will try to get into a bathroom showroom Thursday. Thank you!

What a lovely makeover. I agree with Dee that it's fun to shop from home. I wish I had a slew of rooms to use for storage.

What a lovely bathroom! I'd love to do something with our powder room but it's so small you can barely turn around in it. Would love to have a generous size like yours.

I like what you've done there, and yes, I can see it with a brick floor too.

You did a great job of this bath and it is fun shopping in "our storage." I like doing that with clothes too. We rent a storage house for "stuff" we might want to take back home someday.

Most people I've met have a decorative accessories graveyard :-) I used to have a gift closet too but finally gave that up when I realized I was buying things that were TOO generic and not suitable for anybody.

This is an interior bathroom that hasn't much to recommend it. We use this as the "medicine bathroom." All our OTC medicines are in that vanity----- cold relief in the top left drawer, first aid kit, bandaids and bandages and neosporin in another, ace bandages, arm and finger splints in another, upset tummy in another, etc. We don't keep any prescription stuff here but it is really convenient to keep all this type thing in one location.

I'm thinking a brick floor would really take it up a notch or three, give it one great feature.

Wow...amazing what so little did to make it so MUCH ! Great job. If you rarely use it for anything other than storage I don't know that I would do anymore to it...brick floor etc...it looks great now ! c
