Batten down the hatches? Irene?
Comments (44)I'm amazed at the photos and stories of the damage done in other parts of New England. Here in Eastern Massachusetts, we seemed to have had a mild experience in comparison to others. We had wind and a small amount of rain but it was pretty manageable. Two medium branches were on the ground from Maples and that was about it as far as damage. Two streets over there was a power outage that didn't reach us on Sunday during the day, so we had power all day and then lost it about midnight Sunday night for about 4 hours and that was pretty easy to tolerate. But hearing that some people in our state may have to wait until the end of the week for power to be restored, makes me feel we should prepare better next time, because that could have just as easily have been us. I would have been ready to tolerate a couple of days without power, but 5 days plus, seems like more than we would have tolerated easily. I'm glad it wasn't worse than it was. Seemed to be a lot more damage from a tropical storm than I would have expected though. Hope that everyone here is doing well and not having a lot of damage to deal with....See MoreBoard and batten siding - material choice
Comments (7)Lots and lots of options. First, real planks and battens using cedar. Second, panelized materials starting with plywood with applied wood battens, and moving into artificial materials. You will need to carefully design what is to be used, since there may be the need for one or more horizontal joints, give the height of your exterior wall. It all depends on the maximum height of the materials to be used. For example, plywood panels generally come in 8, 9 or 10-foot lengths. Horizontal joints are flashed with "Z" flashing to keep the water out. The "Z" flashing may be left exposed (I personally don't like it when B&B is used) or covered with a horizontal "batten" which matches the vertical battens or is another dimension. That's why the location and placement is a significant design issue....See MoreFix a boring facade with new siding, windows, soffit, trim etc
Comments (5)So I like the idea of getting rid of the vinyl siding and adding lots of wide white trim boards. Found this pic of doing a two-toned treatment using shakes. Thank goodness they have it in vinyl now. I like the look of the prairie style windows and the dark stain on the deck. I’d get rid of the lattice and do a square lattice but create panels so it is broken up. Since you have a white railing, I would do the frame of the panel white and then either stain the lattice to match you deck and steps or the lower house color. Or just all white but I think that may be too much. Also notice how the panels are lined up with the deck posts....See MoreHelp me pick a Exterior Paint Colors PLEASE!!
Comments (4)We will for sure repaint the entire house minus the brick. Bought this as a foreclosure a few years ago and have been focused on remodeling the interior till now. We were Originally thinking white - looking at Swiss coffee, China white, ballet white, snowbound - but want to be careful not to go too “white”. Painted some samples today with Bm edgecomb grey and it looks like a contender. Would you say paint very thing white, trim, body, doors, etc? we have some gutter match paint we thought about using in some spots as an accent maybe. Thanks!!...See MoreUser
