Board and batten siding question
Comments (22)Ok, current plan is to halt work and get 4x10' sheets. We found it at another lumber supply place. They will rip off the sheets they've installed so far, which is about 15 sheets. If they can salvage any for smaller areas, then they will do it. It's a fairly significant money loss, but I'm willing to pay to avoid the 'foreverness' of noticaeble seams. The 4x10' sheets solve the problem of a seam under our porches and there will only one seam needed on the taller sides before reaching the Hardie shake portion. Now we just need to decide if we want a thicker horizontal board at the seam or the narrower one (same width as the battens). Any opinions? Thick example: Narrower:...See MoreExterior siding help - board & batten
Comments (4)I would agree with MSDG; the Hardie board and batten system is hard to beat if your going to paint and not stain. Cedar & clear redwood sidings will be the most expensive to install and maintain. Your next options would be paint grade material like Advantage (finger-jointed pine that is treated for rot and insects) which is also a good choice but I'm not sure what would be available in your area. I've also seen decent results with resawn plywood install directly over the exterior ply or OSB. The framing needs to be clean and flat but with thoughtful layout to keep the battens symetrical it can be very cost effective and clean with good primer and paint. did I say the Cedar and RW would be very expensive......See MoreBoard and batten or horizontal siding
Comments (27)westmain... I'm not a pro but I like the horizontal, I like the contrast with the linear brick posts of your portico. Your rendition of the mixed version is also very nice. Actually looking at them both closer, I prefer your rendition of the mixed horizontal, and board and batten. Like that you have the horizontal to the left and right of, and in the entranceway which in my eyes provides contrast with the linear brick posts. Prefer your version of the mixed which I find less busy than Beverly's. Also to me your mixed version is more interesting than the plain horizontal, I really like it!...See MoreHelp with Exterior Siding. All Board and Batten????
Comments (15)My opinions only. OP, it's a little difficult to know what you mean by making the siding more modern. But to answer your specific questions: 1) Should I alternate siding materials? No. IMO alternating siding material can be done well but for the most part is poorly executed. From what I have seen it becomes a jumble of materials that detracts from the house. 2) Should we incorporate stone? No. Board and batten siding is classic and timeless. Stone is a passing fad in its current application, especially now with it being added to places where it doesn't belong. Don't get me wrong, stone can be appropriate and also classic, but not the way it is thrown about now on the exterior as some sort of stick on applique. Naturally you would look for colors that you prefer (dark) rather than the white shown below. This is just to give you an idea of contemporary board and batten siding appearance....See MoreRelated Professionals
