How do you protect your dining table?
Comments (38)I have a beautiful Stickley cherry table that was used and enjoyed for about 35 years during which time our 5 children were growing up. I had custom pads for holidays when a table cloth was used but at times used placemats with nothing else protecting it. It wasn’t terrible but I had the top refinished and then used it for another 20 years in our Bed and Breakfast with placemats, a runner, and coasters. I don’t mind the very few scratches as much as the white spots from the failure to use the coasters and a too warm cup being placed directly on it and water glass rings - so it needs to be refinished again. Now, I have another beautiful cherry table and am trying to decide if and how to protect it. Again we love the look of the wood. Has anyone had any experience with the polycarbonate cut to size protective pads that you can see through? Do they protect from the heat?...See MoreHow to protect furniture tops?
Comments (7)I use glass on some of my pieces to keep the cats from scratching, but for individual pieces I also use the felt pieces. I use to love the scarves and love ironing for my mom and great aunt. Can't use them now because the cats think they are great for sleeping on and the scarves just don't look good full of cat hair!! Damn cats, ruining my life. HA! HA!...See MoreHow did you protect your wood flooring ?
Comments (11)I hate to be the voice of doom, and maybe this is an issue in new construction rather than a remodel, but you must make sure that your contractors, installers, etc., don't get lazy or careless because of the cardboard or masonite layer of protection. A dropped tool will still do serious damage. Also--and I can't stress this enough--if you will have something protecting the floor you must make absolutely sure that grit and small stones, etc., do not get caught under the protective layer and get ground into the floor. Someone should be checking the floor and sweeping it periodically to make sure it's okay. This is important after the floor is installed and even more important once they start sanding and finishing. Good luck!...See MoreHow do you protect your soapstone from appliance scrapes?
Comments (6)I was at a home yesterday that had marble counters, and they had gotten a little clear cover that sits on the counter next to the stove, where they didn't want to have to be as religious about spills and splatters. I don't know what you would call that sort of thing, but it was perfectly sized to that little stretch of counter and blended right into the background. Looked like glass, but they said it was actually plastic. Seemed like a really smart plan, and I'd think it would work for scratches as well as for stains if you had a specific area where those appliances live....See Morelindac
