Needing Inspiration Pics/Ideas!

My mom is giving me a small (nighstand sized) cabinet that is really charming. I have an alcove area in my kitchen by the back door about 5 1/2 feet wide and anywhere from 8 inches to 2 feet deep of useable space. She doesn't want me to put plants on this table, so I would love to do a very narrow sideboard or table to put some "decorative" but real plants like parsley. I am also thinking a real but not too tall tree/plant. I am thinking a Pottery Barn look where it is more streamlined than cluttered, but still substantial enough for the area. The dining room is about 22 *10, and this area is at the back door, so just the small table she is giving up wouldn't look right. I am having a hard time finding any inspiration pictures that show a combination of tables/sideboards. Also, I am not committed to a sideboard, just thinking of what could a row of very narrow pots for herbs. There is a large picture window in this alcove (and a 3 panel windowed door on the other wall), so I can't do anything like a hutch :) Thanks in advance, I know I will have this all figured out with your help!

This sounds like fun. Can you tell us the approximate dimensions you want of the finished narrow sideboard or table?
Do you have any pics of the nearby area to give us help in what to suggest to you as far as style? I know you mentioned PB, so does that mean you might not like to use a vintage piece?

Sorry no pics but you might check out the laminated shelving at places like Home Depot and attach to wall with brackets. Comes in white, black, brown, or wood grain I think and different widths as well. HD would probably cut it to your measurements. You could use it like a sideboard with your plants and other decorative items and serve from it when entertaining. The little cabinet might even fit under the shelf.

Perhaps it's a little late, but I strongly advise AGAINST using carpet under your paths. After a few years, the mulch will break down, the carpet will heave up in places and it won't look good. I speak from experience! The worst is short looped carpet. After years, the backing breaks down and the threads become long and straggly and stick out. Shag at least doesn't have long strings. After years in the ground, the dirt permeates the carpet and it weighs 3 times what it did when you put it in, and it is backbreaking work to remove. Most importantly, though, it is NOT necessary!! A 6 inch layer of woodchips will smother any weeds. No underlay is necessary! Doesn't matter if it's carpet or black landscape cloth, there is no point in putting it down. Let me repeat, a 6 inch layer of woodchips will smother any weeds! And after about 2 weeks it will have settled and compacted to 3-4 inches. I have done many paths, many ways, carpet, landscape fabric, stones, and woodchips. My preferred path now is simply woodchips. From Side Garden in July From 2c June in the Garden 2011

Hi catkin & svs128, The tiles are Isole from Oregon Tile & Marble. Since we were going to do two of the walls all the way up, we wanted the variance of hand-molded tile. We're very pleased with the ones we got, but I think any hand-molded tile would give the same effect. There are also some faux hand-molded tiles out there these days that have similar variance and are much cheaper. We almost used one for our kitchen from a local tile store (Seattle Tile), so ask around at yours. We used epoxy grout (spectra lock?). Not sure about the exact grout color, but maybe almond? The ceiling vent cover is really a heat register cover. It came from Signature Hardware, but any register cover will work. I saw that trick in a magazine somewhere and from then on decided I couldn't do the plastic covers that come with the fans. Note that my contractor did put some beefier support up there to hold it in place (as it's a little bit heavier than the plastic ones). The floor tile came from Dal Tile (www.daltile.com). We got the outside square tiles in a preset pattern, so they were very easy for our tile guy to install. They will do any pattern you can imagine, and then repeat it and give it to you in sheets. The hexes in the middle came in full white sheets, so our tile guy pulled out some white ones by hand and put in the black ones for the flowers. The sinks came from Rejuvenation (rejuvenation.com). Unfortunately, they didn't have their sinks shown on their website when we bought ours, but they have them for sale in their Seattle store. I'm not even sure what box they came in or who the real manufacturer is, but the folks that work there are very helpful there, and I'm sure they would tell you over the phone. Glad you like it- we had a lot of fun doing it, and think we came out with something that's functional in a modern way, but has the appearance of a traditional room. Before you make any decisions on style alone, get a budget number in mind and stick with it. All the homes everyone has posted are gorgeous, but if you looked at the prices, they were million dollar homes. Of course location makes a difference, but not really a huge difference. Make sure your architect sticks to your budget as well. Know what 3500-4000sq.ft. includes. Cost per sq. ft varies depending on what materials you choose, sometimes depending on your builder or location or all of the above. Architects, at least the ones we interviewed cost anywhere from 20k to 100k and some included different services than just the design. We opted for a home designer that cost 5k. Was it a mistake or was it just this particular home designer? Maybe it was both. Maybe you are one of the lucky ones and you don't have a budget, but if not, you don't want to have a beautiful dream home on paper that is useless to you. Research this and other websites. And if you are on a budget, know now what you can live and live without and don't let dreamy websites make your eyes bigger than your wallet. Hindsight stinks. Been there, doing that sitting somewhere between depression, desperation and hating to admit my naivety and stupidness. I guess I chalk it all up to a good problem to have, but it still stinks. On the subject of two curtains...unless you mean to draw them back in both directions, which would expose the liner, (unless you used two of those as well, and left the whole business open), I would combine the two curtains in the traditional way...which means, you cut the second one in half, and sew the two halves to the two sides of the first one. Otherwise, you have either a seam or two side hems running down the middle of the whole business. That means undoing the top and bottom hems, at least far enough back to re-sew them in a continuous hem once the pieces are joined all the way along. Any good seamstress should understand that if you decided to have it done.

my3dogs. I can get a pic of the area tomorrow, but my "theme" is sophisticated roosters! I don't have a set dimension in my mind, I am just wanting the area to be pulled together. A sideboard my even be too tall. I guess I was really thinking using the piece I am confiscating from my mother (no pic of that until I go visit and get it ) with another piece, but not just right next to each other lined up in a row :) Also, by budget was just blown by my massive fridge, so I will not be buying a pottery barn piece, but something maybe from Hobby Lobby with a coupon :) I won't get the pice from my mom for a few weeks, but want to have the area pretty well done when I get back. A vintage piece would work very well with the house ('36 brick tudor in the country), but I want the area to not look cluttered. Not to say I don't want a lot of stuff in the area, I just want it to not look cluttered.

luckygal-I hadn't thought about just doing a MDF shelf for the area. The window is really big though and probably starts 20 inches from the floor, so not sure how a shelf would look in the middle of the window? I have a movable high sideboard that fits at my island that I use to have at the window, but it never looked right. It seems that an interesting furniture piece would add a lot of warmth to it.
