anyone have a functional desk for kids homework

I have the desk but now need to make it functional. I don't want it to look like a typical office but need bins or storage for pencils, erasers, etc..., what type of storage small enough for a desk? My son is 10 and needs a nice quiet place for homework--the kitchen is not the place in my home. He has a desk but nothing on it and drawers that are not cohesive for storage.

If you have pictures of your desk that are actually used that would be of help. Any ideas are greatly appreciated.

I realize it's 5 years later, but I am posting my experiences for anyone else who may be reading this thread. I am a parent of a middle-school boy with attention-type ADHD. He was diagnosed in 4th grade and has been on medication since the last marking period of 4th grade. Yes, middle school teachers in general expect a student to turn in homework without being reminded. The students also have to take initiative to discover what work was missed during an absence (classwork and homework) and make up that work as well. All without teacher reminders. For my son, with ADHD and braces, who missed a lot of classes for dental appointments, this could have been a *disaster*. Medications can help. They can help enormously. And there are a whole class of stimulant medications that wear off by the end of the day, thus appetite returns and growth is not inhibited. Metadate is one; my son takes this with very positive results. Another thing that helps is ORGANIZATION. I have really got to hand it to our school system here in Maryland. Our 6th graders are assigned a binder system. The school has created a layout for how the 6th grade binder should look - where the notebook paper goes, how many tabbed dividers there should be and how they are labelled, where the pencil pouch should be and what is in it, sections for each school subject. Fantastic. They also are given an agenda book that they are required to fill in every day. It covers homework for each class and a section for brief notes or reminders. Our schools also have a program called AVID that begins in middle school. During AVID class, the binders are checked for neatness and adherence to the organizational system. Students are graded on their organization! The agendas are also checked to make sure they are being filled out properly and consistently. The kids are also taught how to take notes, how to study, and how to work through a problem that you don't understand, be it math or ancient Egypt. They work in small groups to work through these types of problems and answer each other's questions. I highly highly recommend it!

I want to show you guys my current "messy" desk, so you can help me decide on a color. My original plan was to create a shabby chic office, so the white desk would fit right into that plan. I will probably work for at least 15 more years, so I need something that will hold up well over the extent of that time, which has me thinking about a metal desk. I can only find the metal desk in light gray or charcoal. My walls are a grayish blue, so which do you think would look better? I haven't ruled out the white desk, just trying to look at all the options. Desk #1 charcoal w mahogany Desk #2 gray on gray Desk #3 This is cheaper than the ones above, so I think it may be wood or some type of laminate.

My grandsons did their homework at the kitchen island, and I sat at the island, too, and read or helped if asked. I would have loved to have had a more comfortable chair than that island stool! I wouldn't put the table against the wall unless you are expecting that they will be using a computer, which must have access to a plug. As my grandsons got older (up to age 11), they used their iPads. At 6th grade, one stayed at the island and the elder took over a "project room" that was in the basement garage, and called it his "office". He used it until the went to college this fall. He painted it, bought his own desk at Office Depot and a chair from Ikea, and also installed a hammock for when he had reading to do. It kills me to see that room empty now...

I have 3 kids doing distance learning. When we're at our beach house (that was supposed to be an AirBnB beginning in March... hahahahah), everyone gets their own space (husband gets the office, 10th grader gets the dining room complete with a gigantic picnic table housing his mountains of electronic gear, 8th grader gets the upstairs den/TV room/drum-guitar-bass room, 4th grader gets the very large upstairs landing, and I float). When we're at home-home in our tiny 1000-square-foot house, my 10th grader gets the bedroom he shares with his brother (they both have desks in there), my 4th grader gets a desk in the living room, I get the dining room table, and my 8th grader... gets the garage. :/ So far, my husband has stayed behind at the beach house when I take the kids home. I don't know what we'll do once we're all home, since everyone needs noise-insulated spaces for their zoom meetings. :/

Having a good homework space for kid's has been a priority for me for all of my three kids. The manner in which kid's do homework and the volume that they need to do changes a lot between the elementary and middle/HS years. Not only that but the advent of laptops has changed the way and location in which kids work as well. What remains the same, though, is the need storage space for all of their school supplies, completed work, books and binders. My oldest two we bought expensive computer desk/hutches--but guess what? They do most of their homework on their beds. Probably because it is just more comfortable that way--esp. late at night. Wht I don't like about their desks is that they each have a bottom filing cabinet drawer. I thought it'd be more useful than it actually turned out since it just becomes a catch-all space for all their stuff. I'd have preferred three drawers instead. Our 9-year-old has a vintage keyhole desk with lots of drawers and a deeper (21") desk with a clear glass top. I find the deeper desk works well to allow her to spread out her supplies. As far as organization, I find IKEA and Office Depot to be good places to purchase bins and containers to store all of their stuff. I also recently purchased some baskets to store some of my elder DD's stuff.

Soph DD's desk/bookcase (for her the bookcase/baskets is key to keeping her organized). This pic was taken just prior to start of school so very neat, but on daily basis, text books/binders may be scattered all over--but at least she has a place to put them):

My kids always liked doing their non-computer homework on our dining room table. I think they liked hanging out getting their homework finished while I cooked dinner...
