5000 watt Honda generator trips breaker w/1500 watts?

I'm looking at a used Honda generator. It is a 9hp 5000 watt unit rated at 4500 watt continuous. I brought along a 1500 watt space heater and after about 5 seconds of turning it on it trips the breaker although it seems to just slightly lug down the motor before tripping the breaker. What might be wrong? There was a switch that said 120 v on one side and the other side said 120v/240v which I assumed you would switch to if you used the twisting type sockets which it had one 120v and one 240v of these type sockets. I did not swithch over to the 120v/240v side but regardless shouldn't that generator handle that amount of load and a whole lot more before tripping the breaker? Thanks, Mike.
