How to disguise old stained wainscoting without paint

Lots 'o threads by me today. LOL.

I'm moving to an apartment in a house, and it's fairly dark anyway, without a lot of windows, and the entire apartment has wainscoting that's stained in a dark color. I asked the homeowner if I could paint it, and he didn't go for that at all. Then I started thinking about that beadboard-looking wallpaper that's kind of popular now, or maybe trying the thing with dipping fabric in starch and "wallpapering" with that. What I'm wondering about is if there would be any kind of damage to the wainscot if I took it down whenever I get ready to move from there. I definitely won't do anything to it without talking to the homeowner first. But since he's not even receptive to painting it, I definitely wouldn't want to put something on there that would leave any permanent damage.

Any advice is appreciated!
