Adding a switch to a receptacle

I need to add a switch for an outdoor lamp post to an existing receptacle which has two sets of #14 wires going to it, i.e. two black, two white and two green wires. I tried a couple of options but the braker went off. In fact, the second time I heard the braker click, but it didn't switch to off position (plus my revised wiring still failed). Wondering if the braker needs to be replaced as well. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

The receptacles are daisy-chained which is the reason for what seems like two sets of wires. First, you need to know how a switch works, that is the switch breaks the hot lead going to the fixture. The black is connected to both screws on the switch and the white is wire-nutted off in the switch box and the ground is connected to the green nut on the switch. You really need to run a seperate line to the switch an on to the outdoor lamp post. IMO, you are out of your water. The breaker is tripped and will not reset as long as you have a short in the circuit.

I can follow instructions well. Would it be possible to describe a little more in detail exactly what wire goes where? I was hoping to not have to run an additional line. Thanks so much!!!

Thanks 92, have you ever seen where the seams were not taped and coated and the tile cracked? Just curious. I messed up and set all my remodel boxes with the wires pulled through trying to get the electrical inspected. Now I will have to mud around them or remove them and mud. Thinking it would be much easier to remove them. It's just a little time consuming. Why is everything easier the 2nd time around?

If this existing cable has no grounding conductor, it would be very difficult to get an electrical inspector to accept it for a receptacle, even if it was a GFCI. Read 250.130(C) and 406.3(D), NEC 2005.

... even when you do it for light fixtures, you don't wire it as you've described. Switches need to be in SERIES with the load they are controlling, *NOT* PARALLEL. Does the switch need to control the entire circuit? Your best bet is to run a new piece of 12/2 from the switch to the FIRST receptacle it needs to control, and wire it as a switch loop. Alternatively, you could run your 12/2 switch loop to a junction box inserted anywhere in the circuit as long as it is BEFORE the receptacles to be controlled... A switch is not a magical device. When it is off, it is two pieces of wire that are not connected. When you turn it on, it connects the two wires together... So when your switch is "off" in your existing parallel circuit, it behaves as if it's not there (hence the receptacles are on, just like they would be if you'd never installed a switch). When you turn it ON, it connects the black and white wires together, which is not something you ever want to do.

OMG! I just talked to my dad who told me he had replaced the receptacle at A when he was here helping with the floors a couple of weeks ago. It didn't register with him that it was relevant when I told him about my issues with the closet light last week :-p So it turns out that he had left those loose terminals in the photo and they just needed to be reconnected to complete the circuit :-P Well, I guess I don't too much regret the time I spent troubleshooting since I've learned a lot! It sounds like you're shooting in the dark, which can be hazardous. You are literally shorting the circuit - pretty bad news.

I strongly suggest a copy of Wiring Simplified, available at bookstores, libraries, and in the electrical dept of most big box stores including Home Depot. Please read the chapter on basic electricity first.

Thank you both for your replies. After reading Texasreadhead's note a few times over and over I figured it out. I even replaced the switch with a timer as well.

Good advice on the book. I'll definitely check it out.
