Standard ceiling paint color? & types of paint?

Been trying different paint samples for my LR and realized I forgot about the ceiling.

Is there a good standard paint color for ceilings? I'd like to keep the ceiling colors throughout the house pretty much the same. Maybe different in the LR because we want to add crown molding but that honestly won't be for awhile yet.

Also paint types. What does everyone have on your walls, eggshell, satin, semi gloss? Can you easily scrub it? Do you like it?

Hi Sheeshare! Moving on to paint colors! BM Cloud Cover and BM White Dove are good whites for the ceiling. They are warm whites and blend with most wall colors. As for finish, I would use flat on the ceiling, satin for trim and eggshell for walls.

One other thing...I seem to be doing that a lot lately, hmmm! When considering ceiling color, another idea is to cut your wall color by 50% and use that on the ceiling.

Hi jmcgowan, Can't wait to see your F&B Pointing painted cabinets. Pointing was one of our top choices -- such a beautiful color! Our kitchen isn't that big by kitchen standards these days (it is 274 square feet). So the calm continuity of the same color on cabinets and trim works well in our ''smaller'' space. In general, however, I do like the play of different shades of white layered together in a room. So I certainly don't think there is anything wrong with picking a different white for the trim. In some cases it might add the depth or slight contrast that the room needs. My sense from your drawing is that your kitchen is quite a bit larger; perhaps that is why your architect thinks that in your space having different trim and cabinet colors will work well. I'd encourage him to tell you a bit more about his thinking on this. Again, he may well be right. In any case, once your cabinets are installed, if you decide you want to match (or not match) you can make that decision at that time. As for the counters, we had some rough ideas about what our counter top colors/material might be before we ordered the paint color for our cabinets; but we didn't know for sure. That was a bit of a gamble.

Holy cow, Carol! I hope you'll share before & after pics! It's always fun to see the power of paint in action, and your project sounds like quite the transformation. I mixed paint for a renter yesterday who had similar taste, and though the landlord have given the ok, I still felt a little bad for them. I'm sorry to hear your little Ace went under! The company is doing well over all, but each store is independently owned, and the last couple years have been harder to compete in. I'm so happy to hear you're supporting another independently run store with your paint purchase. :) I'm painting my living room & kitchen BM Sail Cloth today, but Edgecomb Gray was a contender. I decided we didn't have enough natural light to keep it from being a little too dark in the living room in the evening (it changes a lot...gorgeous beige early in the day, but I'm home more in the evening, when it's more gray). Trim would have been the same white I'm using everywhere else, which is a custom blend, but pretty close to BM Simply White, I believe. I might still use Edgecomb Gray in our bedroom, which I wouldn't mind going a little dark. FYI, my store sells BM, too, and when we look up color formulas, some have an "also known as" button. Do everything except trim in flat. I was skeptical when my paint contractor suggested this, but it’s turned out well. Flat is no more difficult to clean and is easy to touch up. Also, flat minimizes flaws and that dappled texture that annoys some people.

I agree with Sandee. I'm a ceiling and wall in the same color but not sheen. This is a hotly contested topic which skews to white ceiling, but a few if us hold fast to same color. An even fewer individuals advocate for a completely different color. I'm glad they exist to keep things lively :) There's no hard and fast rule. It does cost a little less to do the same color, labor wise although you'll buy a different sheen. For dark colors go a few/shades lighter for the ceiling.

I'll check those colors out. Another interesting thing is all my trim is already painted white. When we built the house I just said I wanted standard white trim. SOOOo, I'd rather not paint all the trim since it's already white but does it matter that the trim isn't going to be the same color as my ceiling??

Ok I just thought about what I typed ... I guess it wouldn't look stupid if your walls were green and you cut your ceiling color 50% of the wall color. BUT if i used one of the colors you listed would it look stupid?

I use ceiling white in my rooms and it's is very flat, very neutral. I either leave it as is or I add a bit - a cup or two depending on the room size - of the wall color to ceiling white. It's just enough to marry the two visually and make white crown trim not disappear against a white ceiling. Since ceiling white is neutral you won't get goofy undertones when you mix in your wall color or if you leave it as is.

As for what finish - this is my preference

Ceiling - flat
Wall - eggshell or matt depending on the room
Trim - semigloss
