Recessed lighting tips for basement

Hi all,

We just installed some recessed lighting in our basement, about 8 cans. The area is 16x23, has plenty of windows, half is above and the other half of wall is below grade.

Now, how good are those bulbs that tout to provide a better light (the General Electric) than the yellowish tint that the others give off? Whats the best type of bulb that provides a sort of natural light from the fixtures?

What should we consider? Pluses and minuses?

I think you're talking about GE Reveal bulbs. It's pretty much personal preference-- no set positive or negative per se. GE's Reveal bulbs supposedly put out a light that closer to natural daylight, but when I tried a few I didn't much care for it--- seemed to make everything have a purple hue. Then again I know some people who love them. Get a few different bulbs and give it a try. In addition to standard Soft-White bulbs, Soft-Pink bulbs are an option; I have a friend who loves these. I remember back in the 80's these seemed really popular.

From an energy saving standpoint, I'd consider using compact-fluorescent bulbs. They are available in the flood-type bulb to use in your recessed cans. Personally, this is what I would do if the lights are going to be on for extended periods of time.

You can get full spectrum (or at least very close to it) bulbs in a variety of CFL and other fluorescent fixtures.

It depends on your lighting requirement per sq ft. Lighting the basement should be no different from other spaces in the darkest nights. Assuming that the space will be used as a general living space, 4 ft apart would work fine.

I like recessed cans, much to the dismay of my sister, a lighting specialist. As she points out, recessed lighting leaves ceilings dark, which makes it difficult to achieve a well lit room, but, for me, the absence of protruding light fixtures makes up for that. In a typical 12x12or 14x14 bedroom or dining room, I use four cans, each placed about three feet from the corners, so they illuminate the walls enough to reflect a fair amount of light into the center of the room. Kitchens require more illumination, so, for example, our 12x18 kitchen has eight down cans. Small or narrow spaces like foyers or halls really need surface mounted fixtures to be bright and cheery. Living rooms and dens are apt to need table and/or floor lamps along with recessed lighting. If the recessed fixtures are in an attic, get ones that allow insulation to be packed around them.

At least Halo and Commercial Electric make 4" selectable recessed downlights. You don't have to know the proper color temperature before you buy; you just select a temperature before you push the lamp into the housing. Change your mind? Pull down the light and change the setting. Note that various downlights do have different brightnesses. Alternative: this Halo RL is "tunable" with an app via bluetooth to adjust color temp and brightness; you can even program it.

Those cans make your ceiling the equivalent of Swiss cheese for sound isolation. I’d find the smallest LEDs you can, and use the fewest amount. Also invest in some rugs upstairs with a nice underlayment or pad. They really do help to dampen footfalls noise. You’d lose some height if you do a resilient channel or double your Sheetrock. Is this an actual rental unit? Or just a place for grandma and grandpa?
