Silly little thrift store find that makes me smile!

Hi, on my weekly visit to the thrift store, I came across this little fish and I LOVE it. Not sure why, but it does make me smile and feel good every time I see it. Not bad for a $2 item.

It' sitting on my kitchen counter right now and now I need to find a few more green things to put on the counter to make it fit in.

Anyway, just thought I'd share my little purchase. Do you have anything like this that makes YOU smile?

gardengirl, I'm brunette and suffer from blonde brain disease myself! ;o) I think it's also known as ADD...hee hee. Adderall is a wonderful drug AND it makes me not want to eat, hence the return of my high school figure (well, not quite...let's just say high school weight after having 3 kids...sigh). At least there's something positive about being an airhead (not you, ME!). LOL! There's also a sake by Momokawa that comes in cobalt bottles and a blueberry wine (FANTASTIC) from Dennis Vineyards (here in NC) that's in cobalt. We ordered a case of their different berry wines a few years ago, wish I'd kept more of the bottles! Robin (who doesn't own any blue goblets, boo hoo)

Oh wow, that will be fun to find them, when I think of all the pieces I have walked by in the years past! ha ha I didn't expect that sale, and it was a really plesant surprise! slinkey, Thanks, You have a few pieces? I sent a picture to Judith (email) and she said she could feel a tablescape coming on! ha ha, that means photos when I put one together. Most of my stuff is packed, so I have nothing to work with, I will have to look around some more! TJMaxx will get a visit soon! I have two near me and 3 Ross stores. The Ross stores do not have much. phonegirl, I know, meant to be! I can't wait to get a few more pieces to work with. I will look at some inspiration photos first with lots of color combinations. I might even hang them on the wall! OOOH winter look with silver and white. I already own a lot of silver and white. The possibilities for this new 'dish addict'! Ahhhh! All dogs should be treated like royalty, IMO! I know mine sure are! So, Bonnie, the question is what to do with the white sofa in the first pic - that looks like either metal or vinyl? And you either want to cover the pieces (is it two - one for the seat and one for the back? ) cushions that are on it now, or do something else? Just want to be certain of what you want to do before I offer suggestions. What is the budget for the project? Wish I lived near you, as we could whip up something to cover the current cushions fast, and make a coordinating cover for Billie's! My royalty - on a gorgeous made for Hitchcock leather sofa that I immediately bought a Sure Fit cover made especially for pets for. I only get to see the leather when I wash the cover! But all my kids are rescues, and they are very appreciative.

Oh - I have a green (ceramic) turtle candy dish (his whole top part is the lid) that would go with your fish! Got it at a flea mkt a few yrs ago and love it!

Palimpset is right, I think this is a gurgling cod pitcher. They were made famous in New England by the jewelery store Shreve, Crump and Low, though now I see knock-offs for cheaper than the original. Can't beat your $2 price!

Oh, I thought that was a joke about the gurgling...I tried it and it DOES gurgle...how cool!

Thanks for the link, looks like I did OK for $2. Gotta love the thrift stores!

Fillagirl, thought you might enjoy this article on the pitchers (link below).

Last night on ESPN was a wonderful show on Martina Navratilova and Chris Evert and their longtime friendship. There was a big white cod pitcher that caught my eye near the sink in the gorgeous kitchen (not sure if it was Chris's or Martina's).

Thanks awm, great info in that article. I looked on the bottom of my cod and it just says "Japan", so not a Shreve, Crump & Low original. But nevertheless, I still love it!

I was just opening a bunch of bags of stuff I bought at a thrift store half price sale just before my car broke down and went to the shop for two months. It's like christmas again LOL (Car came back today). I'm having a ball and also wondering what kind of crack I was smoking that day (do any of you need two dozen depression glass cordials? heh heh) Anyhoo, those will go on the shelf and I'll now invest in cordial stuff....

But a couple things made me smile...two fou dogs...I don't know if they're worth what I paid for them (high for a thrift store, low for an art gallary IMO) but their worth does not matter...the dogs are wonderful. I hate asian crap...and yet keep buying fou dogs...what's up with that? I'm starting to name them LOL

I also bought a dandy guy in ceramic something...looks like a 16th century cross dresser. He is on my desk now...he makes me grin :)

I need some cordial stuff I think...LOL

They were sold as "wines" by the way....and I can report with great accuracy that they don't hold enough wine to make it worth your while to wash them LOL

BTW I almost bought a gurgling pitcher many years ago and always regretted it. It was kind of pricy and I didn't know the back story so I walked away and when I pulled up this thread and saw your picture it came right back to mine. It was a pastel yellow...devine in a very goofy way :) I never heard it gurgle but I still miss that pitcher that got away!!! Wonderful find!!!

If it says just "Japan" on it, I believe it may be from pre-WWII. Those made after say "made in Japan". Your $2 find could be worth a bit more than $2!

Oh No! Now I want one! HeHe! Maybe I will be able to find one on my trip to the Texas Antique Weekend in the Roundtop/Marburger area in a couple of weeks.
