Comforter or duvet cover for this bed?

I recently got a new bed and have been redecorating my room. I found some bedding online that I'm going to order, but I'm kinda having a problem with one thing; I've never used a duvet, so I'm not exactly sure if it'll work for what I'm trying to do. It's pretty simple, but I want something to go on the foot of my bed for decorative purposes. I know about throws and bed scarfs, but the website only offers this in a duvet cover or comforter.

I would like my bed to look like the one in this photo:

So, what does the khaki blanket look like at the foot of the bed? Is it a duvet? Duvet cover? Comforter? That's the look I want, but I also don't want anything too bulky. Would I be able to use just the duvet cover to get this look? This is for a queen-sized bed, by the way. Should I get a queen comforter/duvet cover for the foot? Or would something smaller be better, like a twin-sized comforter?

I know this is probably a silly question, but any help would be greatly appreciated! :)

Since this is decorative, a duvet cover could work. You can put a very thin comforter or blanket in the duvet cover, so it can then be neatly folded at the end of the bed.
A regular comforter would be bulky. Again since it is just decorative, get a twin as it will be much cheaper. Then fold it the long way across the bed.

I agree w/ellendi - if you are not going to actually use it, but want the layered/comfy look, use a twin duvet and put a light weight down comforter inside. I think if you only put a blanket, you won't get that puffy look.

Here's how I solved my Duvet problem....I also put a sheet under my Duvet cover.............. I was finding it difficult when sleeping with the Duvet and the cover being used as a blanket , then, in the morning it was my bed cover....I'd be all wrapped up in it & it would get twisted as a blanket would.. I felt my bed was never completely made..How I solved this problem was...I bough & put on my Duvet, a White cover. Then I purchased 2 fancy Duvet covers , I like a change... I have the Duvet with the white cover tucked in at the foot of my bed...When I make my bed in the morning, I pull the Duvet up as you normally would..Then.., I just lay my fancy cover right over the top of the White one,,I also tuck that in at the foot of the bed. You would never know that the Duvet itself isn't stuffed into the fancy cover.. At night, I take the fancy one off & sleep with the white one that is permanently on the Duvet. That's the one the gets washed every so often.. You still can't get away from that lumpy look but I don't think its quite as bad when covered with the fancy one,,,..I guess there's no way of getting away from that completely.....It's a matter of getting used to.. My DD uses a comforter on her daybed and it works just fine. However, it really is not long enough to drape down on both ends of the bed since most comforters and duvets are made to only reach the top of the mattress on the upper end. Given the placement of her daybed, this is not an issue since there is not much open space and she had nightstands. It more than makes up for the ease in making the bed and she can sleep under the comforter (or duvet). This shows what I mean as you can see her sheets peaking out the side. Even if she draped it over the edge it would not be so comfortable for sleeping under since the comforter would be bunched up around her head. As for what forhgtv describes in terms of the width, we just tuck the comforter down the backside so that it does not become displaced at night while sleeping so I don't see that as a concern. From what I've seen of the daybed covers, it is more for decorative purposes and meant to be completely taken off the bed when sleeping. It wouldn't seem that practical for daily use--esp. in winter when you require heavier blankets. I would think with that option, you would cover the bed with just the cover and then makeup the bed with the blankets, etc, when you have a guest similarly to what you do with a sofa bed. My other DD has a duvet on her bed. I like duvets for their ease of washing. Hers is from Pottery Barn and seems generously sized--most likely still short to cover both ends.

Wrong?? No Way! Whatever suits your room, your style, and your comfort requirements is the right thing for you to do. In the Fall/Winter I use a comforter with my sheets and blanket and use it for cover as well as to do my room pretty with shams and throw pillows. Some people love their comforter year round but remove it at night to sleep in the warmer months. That works too. My Bedroom isn't nearly this intense gold and my drapes are a golden beige, but this is about how my room looks with comforter during the cooler part of the year... Years ago, I used a duvet, which is like a giant pillowcase for your comforter. The duvet changes the look of the room in an instant, and can usually be washed so that the comforter is protected. If you get one that fits right, they are great. If you don't like fussing around to make your bed, since trying to arrange a big comforter attractively in it's 'cover' can be a little frustrating, then, maybe a duvet isn't for you. The first time I ever encountered the duvet/cover concept was in Moscow back in the Soviet era (I was living in London at the time--I don't think you could go directly from the US back then). The hotel had white linen duvet covers with blankets inside them rather than separate blankets and top sheets. They were crisp and immaculate and changed daily and I loved the idea, but I have to say that these days I bring my own blanket or a dreamsack when I travel in the US because nothing would make me sleep under those dubious duvet arrangements (edit: i.e., no top sheet) in American chain hotels right now. Yes, duvet with a 3 season comforter (or lightweight comforter) inserted. I think if you just lay an empty duvet at the end of the bed, it will be really flat, and not add much.

The bed pictured looks like it has either a duvet with a comforter inside, or just a regular comforter, folded. It does have some substance to it tho.

I agree that it looks like a duvet, but you could always use a comforter. JCPenney has nice solid colored duvets and comforters. I notice alot of comforters are reversible with a tan one side, another color on the other.

I wouldn't go to the expense of a comforter and duvet, just buy something like the solid comforter linked above.

Speaking of duvet covers ... I'm slightly annoyed at the one I just bought from The Company Store. It's incredibly noisy ... almost to the point where I'm thinking about taking it off completely.

Uh-oh. Natal, my Company Store duvet cover was just shipped according to the email I received yesterday. Which one did you buy, if I'm not being too nosey? Mine is percale cotton (if I remember right).

I love your inspiration photo.... I love the bed, the bedding etc.

Schoolhouse, it's the Damask stripe. I'm thinking I should have bought the dot sateen, but both are described as soft, so no guarantee it would have been any different. I'm so used to Penney's down alternative comforter without a cover. Cloud-soft, but the fill shifts whenever I wash it. I thought a duvet cover would be the answer. Now I'm not so sure. I also don't care for the extra weight it gives to the comforter.
