adult child has issues w/controlling stepfather, please help.

I am 32 y.o., only child and recently married. My father died when I was 18. At the time my parents were divorced but had started dating again, then he found out he was terminally ill and we cared for him thru his last days. A few months after he died, my mom had started dating my stepfather and he moved in w/us, under the pretense that he was only staying there for one month until his new apartment was ready for move-in. He never left and they married in 2001.

My mom is very family-oriented and I've always felt the pressure from her to treat him as a stepfather, etc., and I've done so. He is a nice man but recently we're starting to butt heads (he also has NO children). As I mentioned, I am recently married and I was having some problems w/my spouse before the marriage that I didn't mention to either of them b/c I didn't want to put a "black cloud" over our wedding day. Things got slightly worse after the wedding and I went to my mom's, sad and just wanting to vent to my mom and just confide in her. My stepdad was at work. Well apparently, my stepdad didn't like the way I approached it and wants me and my husband to sit down w/him and my mom. According to him the meeting "is only for both my husband and my learning and we just listen and then go." I told my stepfather this doesn't concern my husband, it was me wanting to confide in my mother. He said there is no negotiation, it must be all four of us (My husband didn't mind me talking to my mom about the issues but he feels this is out of line, as do I). I feel the way he approached it was very controlling and I thought it was out of line. My mom also said she would not talk to me w/out having the meeting either b/c they are a "unit" and she doesn't want to take sides. I'm not asking her to, but I'm her daughter and she's mom and she needs to separate the two sometimes and set boundaries w/my stepfather and where he thinks he can go with me.

In recent years, I have asked my MOM to help me finance a few college courses and a small part of my wedding, but the money has come out of his pocket b/c he's the breadwinner. I don't know if he thinks b/c he's given me money that he has a right to talk to me in anyway he wishes but I don't like the position I'm in. I feel like I'm being treated like a child and I need to break this before it gets worse. In addition, whenever I want to talk to my mom about a problem I'm having w/her, he has to be there and he's always chiming in and taking control of the situation.

I haven't talked to my mom in over a week b/c of this and just her and I are meeting on Sunday to discuss things. After several emails I finally got her to agree to meet with me and not have to include my stepfather. I don't know how to delicately approach this and let her know how I feel about him and the controlling, know-it-all behavior he projects towards me. Any advice, please??

Oh Juliet, I'm sorry. I don't think he has any right to think you should tell him and your husband what you tell your mom. I don't think you should be telling your mom about your marital issues either, but that's just because in my experience mothers do not let things go and she may never get over the fact that one time your husband did __________.

Especially since you were legally an adult when they got together, I think his role should be more of a friend than a father. He needs to butt out.

Tell your mom there are things you don't feel comfortable discussing with him. If she says she should be able to tell him, she's right. He is her husband, and you will have to accept that you cannot tell her anything that you don't want him to know and have an opinion about. There is no way to be delicate with step-situations. He may be controlling, he may be thinking he knows best, he may have your best interests at heart, he may just be a jacka$$. But she feels trapped in the middle. I would find another confident than my mom.

My Biological father does not like any of us "kids" bringing our marital porblems into his home. Period. His reasoning is that my mother is a worrier and any time we confide in HER it causes problems with THEM because she will totally obsess over it.

Is it possible maybe your step father is worried it will become a common thing for you to bring your problems into the household so this is a feeble attempt on his part to nip any potential problems in the butt? I'm not saying it makes it any more his business but maybe if you understood WHY he was acting the way he is it would be easier to solve the problem.

I'm with Silver...if both mom and StedDad insist you all be present and you are just not comfortable with it maybe you should find someone else to confide in when it comes to marital troubles. Theres really not much else you can do if they are both in agreeance.

Yes, because my daughter is 28 and has multiple developmental birth defects, I recently went back to college to get a degree in Human Services so I can level the playing field. After 28 years of doing what I do, I consider myself an expert on programs and entitlements at least in a couple states where we've lived. I have been through it all including widowhood and 2 marriages while raising my daughter. My goal is to keep her OUT of institutional living. I have fought all the way to the governor and won. There is no fortitude like a mothers! My daughter has her own home ( I designed it wheelchair accessible) and she qualified for every program under the sun. She has limited income, in-home caregivers and lots of technology to make this work. If there is any one out there who would like some advise I may be able to help. The whole thing is "equal not more" I have been working in this field for 28 years and I give away my input support and encouragement because I can. There are many of us out there raising adult disabled children.

I also stated just those words when my 5 children were small. My oldest was only 14 at the time and I was speaking with a neighbor and she told me she had not had contact with one of her son's for years. I was genuinely shocked. I did not know of such a horrific thing. Could that truly be? Nah, would never happen to me and my kids, NEVER. My eyes teared up as she spoke as I thought of my 3 sons and 2 daughters in a situation like that. I would just stop living and die for sure. Well, funny thing is life. My oldest son is now 27 in August and I have not had any contact with him since Sept. 26.2009. Almost 6 years. Guess what? I was right, I did die. My youngest son say's that mom must of died when West left. He saw it all, they all did. I did not cope well. I still have days and nights that are endless and unbearable. I can be strong for so long and not even think of him for months then a song on the radio or a tv show he liked, or one of my kids asks for me to cook a recipe that was his favorite and Im shattered like the day he left. I hope people do not judge, but yield to the notion that it can happen to anyone. Any parent. He was the one I always had time for, the one I watched sleep in his crib for 2 years just to look upon him. So beloved. My favorite person on this Earth. Even today. My good friend. I was shocked when I stumbled upon this thread. Each post speaks from my mouth, each tear falls from my eye. We are the same broken mommy. I will say, the one technique that saved me and my other children is Shunning. It is the only way. I stole or borrowed it I should say from the Jehovah's Witness neighbor that I have few homes down. It works for me. I feared all these years of my reaction to him coming back, calling , writing, bumping into him in public. I feared that my mommy instinct would be my downfall . I felt vulnerable and I did not want my family put through anymore of my sons psychopathy. I will never be a victim again. Shunning keeps everyone safe emotionally and physically for it will not allow me to respond to anything in any way. It is the only way. I worry that my love for him would leave me open to danger and to fall for his smooth ways just to be harmed in some way or my kids. Just cannot give him the benefit of the doubt ever. SHUNNING. I can sleep at night now. Less and less I think of him and those incredible 21 years I had in his presence. He is fading away now in my mind. We do not speak his name. Removed all photos and items of his. It feels like I never had that one child almost. It feels better this way, so odd but true. I could give a long story, but this is long enough. Just wanted to say I did not know so many mom's go through this crap too. And this is some crap boy, It rips you in half and you die. But through shunning, I have a hopeful future ahead, me and my 4 other children who love me and need me and don't want their brother to ever come back. they say "I miss Weston, but I don't miss all the stuff". The stuff, gosh there was A LOT of stuff. I tell them..."me too".

First, I'd like to thank everyone-with clear exception of Sylvia's caustic, sexist rant to a sincere plea for insight. I take issue with the claim that I just don't understand Sylvia's ways. Rude is rude, mean is mean, sexist is sexist despite any lack of 'understanding' on my part. The other responses offered a lot of food for thought and reflection. To offer some fill-in-the-blanks. Mom has been a single mom for a long time and has longed for a loving influence in her daughter's life. Mom has totally welcomed the excellent relationship I share with her daughter. I have taken on many natural parent roles by mutual agreement for our busy lives (Mom works). Since Mom leaves early for work, it's my pleasure to get SD ready. Then Mom, who's schedule is flexible, can get home early after school. Since I am a physician and mom really wanted the sleep, I stayed up with SD when H1N1 struck. I do Mary's homework with her because my wife just blows up at her (lots of history and frustration there). I am used to the single-parent role as I raised my two, grown boys (by their mother's preference due to her depression)from the time they were small. I love and miss my role as a parent and hated having an empty home when they grew/left. The biggest insight was finding an explanation why I was rushing things. My younger boy was troubled- terribly- his whole life and died suddenly exactly two years ago. Part of my overzealousness in having strong family structure, was perhaps to atone for the guilt I feel for not being the uber-parent that may have saved my son (a ridiculous, but hopefully understandable, thought). I now understand that this is my personal issue and I shouldn't make SD the focus of this atonement. Mom has strongly encouraged and welcomed the loving relationship I share with her daughter. It has been in no way forced by me. I have had a longstanding love for children. They were always in an exalted position in my family. My SD is a sponge for positive male affection, given a distant father. I guess I need to add that SD is actually adopted, which may affect the dynamics. SO, I am hoping that,through the passage of time, that things will evolve. I am trying to chill. I DO take issue with my wife for the unsettling habit of generally focusing solely on her goals without looking around to see how her actions affect others. It is not her strong suit. So, when she asks me to take the XMAS week off to be with SD and, last minute, she changes her mind to send her to her cousins, that strikes me as inconsiderate. If it had been her initial desire to do so:fine. But not after I had made all the arrangements to my busy schedule. Thank you again for the responses. They have been helpful. Initially, I worried that I had walked into the hornet's nest of a 'girl's club.' It was nice to see some measured, well-considered and compassionate responses.

If you continue to beg, you will have to go to bed 15 minutes earlier." Ã¢ÂÂBut mom, I only wanted-Ã¢ÂÂ "Okay, thatÃ¢ÂÂs 15 minutes earlier you have to go to bed" "Mom, you are being so unfair!" You are going to have to be really hard on her for a while, because she is so used to getting her own way all the time. You should watch some episodes of the Nanny - she shows how to be firm but loving with your children, and has some great discipline and reward/punshment techniques. Another thing to keep in mind, how do you think your other two children feel when they see their sister getting away with things? It's really not fair to them. Another thing - you don't have to "pay" for taking the kids away from your ex. How could you have taken them away from him if he was never around? You were married for 21 years so NO ONE can say you didnÃ¢ÂÂt try to make it work. You did not leave him, he left you when he stopped doing things with you and the kids. My exH was the same way as your ex, he never spent any time with me and our two daughters. I felt like a single parent even though I was married. I divorced him after 11 years and wish I had done it sooner. And during the divorce I found out he had been cheating on me. I give you permission to forgive yourself. I agree with Silver and doodle. If you want to talk to your mom confidentially then you have that right to ask for that. If she cannot or will not do that without your step father then she is giving you an answer to that request. Don't blame him, she's your mother, he's just her husband.

That being said, maybe he is being controlling towards you since he perceives you as not just his wife's daughter but as a child. When you put your hand out for the college courses, wedding expenses etc., unless it was a loan, you went back in to the child/parent model with the parent footing the child's bills. Did you really expect that the money came with no strings attached? Your stepdad is feeling like he has rights in your life because he has an investment in your life. You want to be treated like a grown person? Especially a married person? Act like one and don't go running to mom and stepdad for money. When you took the money you put YOURSELF back in to a child's role. Surely you know that stepdad is the provider of finances so why did you ask? Are you grown or not? You decide that not them.

Sorry Juliet - I have to agree with everything that's been said above.

Is there any way you could have a talk with your Mom and StepDad to spell things out a bit? You'd have to outline a bit and practice, but convey the following messages:

- I am very fond of you StepDad and am happy Mom found a partner to share her life with.

- I appreciate everything you have done for me StepDad and know that the money for my college classes and wedding came from you.

- I am lucky to have two loving, caring adults in my life to help me, and You, StepDad, will always have a special place as a trusted advisor and friend. But Mom will always be Mom. No one can ever replace or even equal my Mom in my heart. Mom raised me, and you helped fine tune the nearly-adult version.

- I know that as marriage partners, Mom will confide in you everything I share with her, and I'm OK with that. But please understand that there are some things I can only talk to my Mom about. I really appreciate your accepting that.
