Good quality and reliable brand of light switches
Comments (7)In some cases you may even find a difference between the individual switches and the 'contractor' (read: 'cheap and nasty') grade from the same brand. Having said that, people who know me on here know I'm very fussy, and I have no problem using them. It's mostly down to feel but I imagine hospital grade are better and have a higher duty cycle/number of closure ratings. For perspective, the magnetic contact switches I was fitting for alarm systems have a 10,000,000 operation rating. For most purposes I suppose that is a 'lifetime' rating as those switches are not always considered 'replaceable' but of course, there's always a way....See Morerandom wall switches
Comments (11)Sorry I haven't gotten back to y'all. I haven't been able to do any investigating inside the boxes yet (just too much to do, but it's on the list) but I appreciate all the information and have saved it all. There are ceiling fans in most of the affected rooms which were never wired properly when the previous owner installed them; one of the double switches just turns the entire fan/light unit on and off, you have to operate the fan and light individually with the pull chains. I believe there were just light fixtures there originally. The rooms were carpeted but we had hardwood installed. We got up close and personal with those subfloors ;-) so I know there are no floor receptacles. The PO thought he was a better DIYer than he actually was so the notion of replacing receptacles and not doing so properly is well into the realm of possibility! I'm crossing my fingers for that simple unhooked wire that can just be hooked back on, though. A friend is going to come help blast through some of the tedious and time-sucking things on the looooong to-do list, and one of his jobs will be those outlets now that we know what to look for. I think the blank plate route would be the last resort, it seems like it would just shout "here's an electrical weirdness" (and none of them are conveniently located for just hanging a picture over LOL) - I take it there's no way of really getting rid of it without removing the whole wire back to the breaker box?...See MoreIs there a requirement or 'best:' height for switches?
Comments (3)Electric Codes do not regulate the height of wall switches in residential dwellings. (Except if one wants to employ the maximum disconnect height of 6'6") Accessibility Codes, however, do regulate the height of switches in commercial occupancies (even residential commercial occupancies like accessible apartments, hotel rooms, motel rooms, dorm rooms, hotel suites, etc...) to a minimum height of 15" to a maximum height of 48" above the finished floor. Common practice for residential switches is to center them 50-52" above the floor....See MoreHandySwitch quality?
Comments (2)Menards has one that I almost got for the grandfolks. They have a toy closet with a pullchain light, no switch. Don't know the name but it goes for $15-$20. One part is the switch and the other screws into the light socket and then the bulb screws into there....See More- 16 years ago
