Look what DH brought home today!

I have been wanting to find a small, walnut drop leaf table for our bay window. Well this week during his travels, DH stopped in a little antique shop and there it sat. He called me with the measurements and it was perfect!

It measures 22" in width and 38" long with the leaves down. The top and both leaves are each made from one board (no joining) There are some knots, which I think just add to the character of the table.

The slides that pull out to support the leaves when in the up position are really neat. Hard to describe but the ends are shaped like little handles to make it easy to grasp and pull out. Along the side edges of the leaves there are support boards screwed in so that the board does not warp or cup over time. It did have casters at one time, so we will be on the hunt for some porcelain casters now.

I think DH did darn good! What do you think?

oh pretty...I have 2 side tables in the LR that have the same mechanism for the leaves that open...and I have a walnut gateleg too !! Your DH is a wonder. c

I apologize for not responding sooner. Somehow I think I replied to the "preview" page then failed to hit accept. Just returned to see if there were any replies and realized I never responded, how rude of me ! ;) The coldest temperatures we had were maybe a half dozen nights at about 28 degrees reaching into the sunny 60s during the day. We are coastal and the sun is fairly strong here. I will move them to brighter light under the sea grape canopy once their blooms are finished. I just can't bear to send them out there (out of near sight) right now.

Lucky you!!!! Cooking this is dead easy. While it roasts, you have time to do the sides. Be sure to bring the meat to room temperature before cooking and salt about it about 4 hours before or even overnight. It makes a big difference. You can even put the mustard glaze on in the beginning to help form a nice crust. Serve with a potato gratin and some fresh asparagus or a creamed spinach. Standing Rib/Prime Rib roast 1/3 cup Dijon mustard 2 tablespoons minced garlic 1 tablespoon chopped thyme leaves 2 teaspoons coarsely ground pepper Kosher salt 3 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil One 5-rib 12- to 13-pound prime rib roast, chine bone removed Preheat the oven to 450ÃÂ°. In a small bowl, mix the mustard with the garlic, thyme, pepper and 2 teaspoons of kosher salt. Whisk in the olive oil. Set the meat, bone side down, in a roasting pan and season it lightly with salt. Roast the meat in the lower third of the oven for 20 minutes. Remove the meat from the oven and reduce the temperature to 350ÃÂ°. Brush the mustard coating all over the top and sides of the meat and roast for about 1 1/2 hours longer, rotating the roasting pan 2 or 3 times for even browning. The meat is done when an instant-read thermometer inserted in the center of the roast at the thickest part registers 120ÃÂ° (for medium rare). Transfer the roast to a carving board, cover it loosely with foil and let rest for 20 to 30 minutes. Set the roast on its side and run a long, sharp knife between the bones and meat; remove the bones and set them aside. Turn the roast right side up. Carve the roast 1/4 to 1/2 inch thick and transfer the slices to warmed plates. Pour any carving juices over the meat and serve at once. For bone-gnawing carnivores, cut down between the rib bones and pass them on a plate. *If the bones are not cut loose by the butcher, do so with a very sharp knife and tie them back on. Enjoy your feast. This is the same way I did 4 roasts for about 60 people for Dads 75th birthday.

Great find and I wouldn't have passed it up either. Glad your kitty is ok. Is the fabric rather heavy and have a 'sheen'? If so, it is likely chintz and should probably be dry-cleaned and not washed unless you don't mind the sheen going away. It will probably be somewhat wrinkled and yes, it will shrink some, so if that is an issue I wouldn't wash it.

fori, yes we both enjoy stopping at antique stores. He doesn't usually stop without me, but sure glad he did this time!

Carolyn, we had also looked for a gateleg table, but hadn't found one that fit in the bay (or that we could afford!) Would love to see a picture of your table.

adriennemb, no I agree that would not have been a nice surprise at all!

dianalo, yup, I think I will keep both. The table is not as red as it looks in the picture. My camera does not do the greatest with night/indoor pictures.

Next we want to find 2 walnut side chairs, possibly with needlepoint seats?

here are a couple pics. We got it at an antique market in Chapel Hill NC back in the early 70's. I love your table and think the chairs will be perfect.

What a great little find! Hubby did good! And how lucky are you!

Trailrunner, love the table, but I want the crochet table Doily! My Grandmother used to make them, then she taught my mother and myself, but my crocheting could never turn out that well! That's gorgeous!

ttodd...can I see a pic ? We used it as our only dining table when we were in married student housing at UNC. We had one baby then. When we had 2 babies we moved to Carrboro to a duplex. Baby #2 would be in his rolling walker and as he passed the table he would go under/through the table cloth and it would cover him up...it never slowed him down and anything that was on top...yep dishes...would go with him and the cloth ! The boys delighted in playing under the table and letting the gates loose....they are 34 and 36 now...sigh.

lukki: that crocheted table topper and another that is smaller were made as a gift for my Mom by a friend of hers back in the 40's. I love them. They look brand new. I am glad you like it. No one much uses them anymore. c

ttodd and carolyn, thanks for the pictures. Love the tables. Maybe I should rethink a gateleg table? Guess I could always find another spot for another table? :-)

I too love the doilies and table covers. I have a drawer full and always check them out at auctions and antique stores. I know they are not "in" but in my house they are used. My mother and grandmother both used to crochet, but alas I do not have any they made. Not sure what happened to them.

Thanks everyone and yup, I think he is a keeper too!

Well, it's beautiful, the ones I have are from when I was a kid, so the 60's & 70's. I use them and always will. :c)

lukki and ML ...I only have the 2 white ones and I have a gorgeous one that is for Christmas...all made by the same lady for Momma. None of us ever learned any hand crafts...I always used my left handedness as an excuse. I will get out the red/green one at holiday time and show it off. c
