SO None of my business, but...

35 year old StepSon has a long history of financial irresponsibility. And like many other parents, we spent years of trying to help him gain financial independence and maturity and develop a strong work ethic. Bottom line - it really hasn't worked, and SS continues in his Mom's track of trying to live the whole middle-class lifestyle on a spotty moderate income.

Anyway, SS and his GF of about 18 months recently bought a house together. I don't know exactly what their financing arrangements were other than that they got a "great interest rate" from the builder, who was highly motivated. I know SS has LOUSY credit, including one bankruptcy; don't know about GF's financial situation other than that we like her in general and that she has a steady FT job that pays OK but has great benefits. Anyway, SS lost his job a few months ago and has been on unemployment and working part-time for Hubby since then. And SS told Dad that he and GF have been fighting about money - or according to him, that GF has been "ragging on him" about getting a new job and bringing in more money.

So here's where things get really messy -- apparently, he told her he paid the mortgage, but really, he hasn't. He told this to his Dad in confidence, but Hubby told me, and I'm really ticked off about it! Hubby and I totally agree that there will be no handouts from us, and SS is very aware of this. (We already did numerous gifts, loans and lectures years ago.) Now, our assistance is limited to letting SS work for Dad, and that we will give him as many hours per week as he wants to work -- and he hasn't worked above 30 hrs in a week yet!

Anyway - My concern is for GF and their budding financial independence. SS has lied to her, and what she doesn't know will hurt them both, and could even cost them their house. A big part of me wants to tell her -- but then, I'm not even supposed to know, so telling her would be a betrayal of SS's confidence. And it is SO none of my business...

Do I have this right? Should I sit back and do nothing?
