knob & tube & GFI outlets

Hello, I have a circa 1917 home. The circuit breaker box in my basement was new 11 years ago when I bought the home and the wiring I see in the basement ceiling running to it is flat plastic covered wiring about an inch wide. However, I know that the ceiling lights in my second story are knob and tube black cloth covered wires without junction boxes - I saw it when I was going to replace an old ceiling light but got scared and just put it back and avoid turning on that light. But, my son's bedroom has a ceiling fan/light installed, so maybe some of the wiring up there was replaced? I have three hole outlets (without GFI) on my kitchen counter, but the rest of the house is old two slot outlets. I have no idea how to figure out how much wiring is new and how dangerous that old knob and tube is behind the plaster walls. Any idea how much it costs to have someone rewire to my second story, or how I can get grounded outlets and GFI outlets?
