I need help with basic wiring questions for a kitchen remodel

Hello all,

I am in the middle of a kitchen remodel. I have some basic wiring understanding. I also own the Black & Decker complete guide to home wiring which is quite informative.

My old electric range was direct wired. I am installing a new range/oven that is gas/electric and moving the wall that it is located on.

The wiring that is in the house for the old range is old and I don't plan to reuse it. If possible, I will try to remove the wire from the house completely. However, this may not be possible. What do I need to do for code/safety concerns? I will install new wiring to the new stove from the circuit panel after disconnecting the old wire. Do I have to do anything special to the old wire if I leave it in the walls?

I have a similar question for other wiring such as for an old garbage disposal and dishwasher. If I cannot remove the wires from the walls/floor, what do I need to do? If they are on a shared circuit, do I need to terminate the wires in a juction box?

I really have no idea. I appreciate any advice you can offer.

For the range, if possible, remove the cable from the circuit panel and cut off as much of it as you can access, from both ends, without tearing out additional wall. Cap off the hole where the cable entered the box.
If you won't have access to the side of the panel to remove the cable, cut off all of it that is inside the box.
Take a lot of care working inside the panel. Unless the meter is pulled or there is an external disconnect, there will be live power in there.
As for the GD/DW circuit, if you are not removing the entire circuit as above, you can go to the next device upstream and disconnect and remove the wires leading downstream (or whatever is accessable, as above). If you can't identify the next device upstream, terminating in a junction box is acceptable, though that JB must remain accessable.

Thank you. That is basically what I thought.

I should be able to remove the wires from the main box and I can cut them back as far as I can.

After looking again, it appears as though the disposal is on its own circuit. The dishwasher is on its own circuit. The range is on its own circuit. So, if those breakers are the right amperage for the new units, I can run new wire from the new units to the main box and attach to the old circuit breakers.

The refrigerator is not on its own circuit. The old refrigerator would make some lights dim when it kicked on. I am going to terminate those wires inside a junction box with a metal cover plate that can be accessed behind the new refrigerator. Then I am going to put the new refrigerator on the new circuit for the new GFCI outlets in the kitchen. Is that acceptable?

Oh, hi emmhip! :) I completely know what you mean. And while I subscribe to FlyLady's emails, I haven't checked them (my "list" email is the most organized thing in my home - it all goes to separate folders in my inbox, lol). Anyway, what I've been doing is just a bit here and there. Today, I went through all the drawers in my dresser, and got rid of matchless socks, underwear that weren't ever going to be worn by me again, and assorted other things that I was no longer using or planning to use (including a Motherhood slip - my youngest if now 4 years old, ahem). I also cleaned (with a toothbrush!!!) my bathroom sink, including wiping down the cabinets. Thoroughly cleaned the toilet, too. I've been vacuuming every day for the last week, and sweeping, too. Two days ago, I finally cleared (what a task!) the table and counters except for two hotspots that I'm still working on. The kids' bathroom had a decent clean two days ago; I still need to go in and do an "on my hands and knees" floor cleaning. And my laundry? Well, it's caught up only because we recently bought the largest capacity washer (and matching dryer - our old washer broke, perfect timing!) and for the first time EVER, my laundry has been caught up without my hubby stepping in to help. :) I LOVE my new W&D, and have taken meticulous care of it (I follow the care instructions carefully, lol). I was so proud the other day when I washed all the kids' bed linens in one day. I'm sure that hasn't been done before (by me, anyway). However, my wood floor is still in bad shape, and I really need to wipe down all the kitchen cabinets, and most of the doors in the house. My daughters' room is still a mess, but that's largely because my 7yo dd has learned my bad habits, so we both need work. ;) Anyway, there's still much to do, but I trust that FlyLady's admonition to take baby steps will eventually get me to where I need to be. And also, this isn't really part of the above, except that it is FOR ME, but about 3 months ago, I was dx'd with severe ADD symptoms and mild/moderate depression. I've been on Wellbutrin since then, and the change has made all the difference for me. It was slow getting here, but when I look back to where I was before, I'm amazed at the difference in how I feel, and how far I've come. The above probably doesn't apply to most folks, but I feel I'd be disingenuous if I didn't include it as well. Anyway, it's hard to struggle and feel like you can't get ahead, and then, to be so overwhelmed in your own home that it's not relaxing, but rather stress-inducing, and I realized I was the only one who could change that for me. And I am, slowly but surely. Best of luck to you, and yes, get that book! (Don't worry about her time tables for cleaning - for that, I'm fine with FlyLady's plan - I just need to know the "how-to" of taking care of a home.) "Is there a way for me to connect this to the computer in the study using the cat 5 wiring?" If I'm understanding what you meant, you want to connect the non working computer, directly to the working computer and share the internet connection? If so, then no you can not do that via the existing wiring. You would need what is called a cross over cable ran directly from computer to computer. You could possibly jerry rig something up, but I won't even go into that as it would be very confusing to try to explain. You already have a wireless router, go and buy a wireless NIC for your daughters computer (not a cheap USB adapter, get an actual wireless NIC). If you can't get it to work, call the tech support number. Going wireless is going to be your cheapest and easiest option.

Revising the wiring doesn't necessarily require bringing the wiring up to code. Title 24 still includes NEC 250.130 (C) However, I would always advise rewiring the entire circuit anyway. The price per receptacle is so rediculously high, even trying to imagine California costs, that it had to include "fishing" the wires in without removing the drywall, which takes more time. It really doesn't matter much if they have to tape a few small sections of drywall, or a whole room, it still takes the same number of trips and the mud still take just as long to dry. This should have been included in the GC's contract to take care of ALL trades at one time. It should have been included as a general rule. If nothing else, as a listed charge as an "extra" that is almost quaranteed to happen. If they are charging you the price per receptacle for fishing in wires, and then charging you for removing drywall, so they don't have to fish wires, then I would call that double dipping, or at least getting charged for "fishing" that didn't happen. Charging more for inspected work is not a good sign. Writing a contract that presumes illegal practices is in itself, illegal. Any judge should be on your side immediately just because of that.

long term best to get a range and hood on your exterior wall...left of window??...do you have some wall space there? 2nd best would be on fridge wall ..they go up into soffit w one 90 degree turn to the exterior . kind of tough because your kitchen is large and you probably arent ready for a big remodel right away which is wise. I dont think I'd vent a hood up at the island spot..... esp since you have abundant space to rework this.....if you removed cabinets left of window ..install range and hood / got a new top for the island/ left in place the wall oven and microwave ...seems okay . you have inherited builder grade stuff- [cabs and formica ] it appears / perfectly reasonable to do something this narrow in scope right now. perhaps the formica can be cut to make room for the stove on exterior wall....save a rip out cost which would get me going on the project.. If you think a full remodel could happen in 3-5 years..... [big space - save and plan] I'd wait .

Don't put a fridge on a GFCI cc't. If the GFCI trips, your fridge stops and you're screwed if you don't notice or are away.

Should I put it on a dedicated circuit or what?

As it stands I will be wiring in a number of dimmers, under cabinet lighting, GFCI outlets. Do I add it in to one of the other lines or do I run a dedicated circuit for it?

When the 2008 NEC becomes effective all the exceptions for GFCI's will be gone. We had a NEMA rep at our IAEI meeting who is part of the CMP, he said the reasoning was new appliances do not trip GFCI's. If the fridge trips the GFCI, there's probably something wrong with it. The point that was made was, would you rather come home to find all your food spoiled, or your daughter lying on the floor?

We always begin new code practices early so when it becomes effective it is seamless for our company. The inspectors appreciate not having to "teach" us with red tags, which seems to be the only way most find out about new codes.

I wouldn't bother with a dedicated cc't, as today's fridges use less power than older models. But I definitely wouldn't put it on a GFCI protected cc't. GFCI's can and will fail eventually. But that's me and everyone has different opinions.

Seems to me I've seen a freezer that had a pilot light, so the owner would know it had power. If GFIs are to be required in 2008, this might be a worthwhile feature for the manufacturers to add to refrigerators, too. Maybe the multi-thousand dollar models could have an alarm (perhaps powered by a nicad battery or even a supercap).
